What is THAT? A Fun Story from Pastor Amy

I arrived in New Rockford on April 19th for my “in-person socially distanced” interview to be your pastor. I knew what the outside of the church looked like from the website, Google, and because I had been to New Rockford when I served my internship year in Binford. But I had not seen any pictures of the inside of the church sanctuary. I walked in and was greeted by the friendly faces of the call committee members. As I walked further in, I looked to the left and saw a big screen tv on the wall. The whole screen was filled with an image of a church sanctuary.

For a second, I thought maybe it was a screen saver image. Then, I thought maybe it was a picture of my home church in Bottineau… I mean, it sure looked like it. I pointed at the tv and said, “Um, what is THAT?” The friendly faces explained that it was the sanctuary; that there is a camera that projects the sanctuary onto the tv screen in the fellowship hall. I stood there dumbfounded and delighted. I was dumbfounded because the sanctuary here at First Lutheran is exactly the same design as the church in Bottineau where I grew up. Oh, and the name of that church is also First Lutheran. Check out the picture! See?!

Thanks to all who continue to send in their offering, even if you are not yet attending in-person worship services. Seeing our financial numbers staying strong during the pandemic shows just how important the ministry of First Lutheran is to our members! We appreciate you all and your continued support of FLC! 7th & 8th graders and parents will meet for a Faith Stepping Stone class on Saturday, Oct. 3rd from 1-3 p.m. or Sunday, Oct. 11th from 6-8 p.m. Please get your registration forms to the church office. A special worship service will be held on Sunday, October 18th to cel-ebrate our 100 years in ministry, hope you can join us! What is the Synod Endowment Day? It is our once per year opportunity to support the EaND Synod Endow-ment Fund. What is the Synod Endowment Fund? Good question! The Synod Endowment Fund is an amazing ministry of the Eastern ND Synod of our church. It was established in 2000 to help our synod recruit and retain strong pastoral leadership. How does the fund accomplish this? This fund currently provides: Scholarships to Seminarians Student Loan Repayment for Pastors Pension Funds for Pastors Funding for Rural Congregations to Host Pastoral Interns How can you donate to this important fund? Another great question! On Sunday, October 4, and Wednesday Octo-ber 7, we will receive a special offering. Checks should be made out to “EaND Synod Endowment Fund”. A note from Pastor Amy: I am just so thrilled to lead a congregation that donates to this fund. Each semester of my four years at seminary, I received $2000 from this fund. It made all the difference in my financial situation. My seminary classmates were all a bit jealous that their synods did not support them at the level of my synod. This is a ministry we can be really proud of in Eastern ND Synod. Thank you in advance for your generosity

(Pastor Amy - continued from pg. 1) In addition to being dumbfounded, I was indeed delighted; delighted be-cause God is just that cool. God had a plan and it was becoming clearer by the minute. Members of the call committee took me into the sanctuary and I literally got verklempt and weak in the knees. I immediately was transported into my past, remembering exactly where I knelt at the rail for my first commun-ion on my confirmation day. Standing in our sanctuary that day felt like a big warm hug from Jesus, a sign that First Lutheran Church in New Rockford was my church home. And to add just one more layer of wonderment to this story, here is a pic-ture of my church in West Fargo, where I was a member and employee for just over a decade. This is where I taught children’s ministry twice a week…

Yah, God is pretty cool like that.

And I am indeed home with all of you!

    Women’s Ministry September 2020

Beautiful Fall Day Greetings! Our wishes for health and peace are what we have for you this month. I know all of you will be as happy as we will be when we can get back to “doing things” in church. In the meantime, we must do all we can to make lives better, for ourselves and those around us. Keep our spirits up by praying to our Almighty Father in heaven, and then do all the earthly things we are supposed to do, including hand washing, etc. It seems funny to me as I can remember Mother telling me, “wash your hands!” May God bless us, each and every one, and may HE continue to be with us in His world in this time. Ardyce Snyder and Betty Westby, co-chairpersons

Worship Here or There By Pastor Amy

Holy Communion at Home The church is anywhere people gather in Jesus’ name. In the midst of this global pandemic, we gather as the body of Christ both in the sanctuary and in our homes via the radio broadcast. Wherev-er and however we gather, we worship together. Holy Communion is a special meal we celebrate when we worship together. The bread and wine are the real presence of Jesus, and we trust that Jesus is really with us in this meal. Our desire is that all worshipers are able to partake in the sacrament of Holy Communion. To this end, we have purchased prefilled communion cups (see picture). These cups contain both the juice and communion wafer in a single two-part container. You simply peel back one seal to remove the wafer and then a second seal for the juice. How wonderful is that? Love, grace, and forgiveness in a conven-ient “at home” package! Consider preparing a worship space in your home. Find a small side table and create an altar. Consider a nice doily, placemat, or cloth. Place a Bible on the altar and a small cross. Light a candle or two in preparation for worship. Place your prefilled communion cup on a fancy plate. Then partake of the bread and wine with these words, “This is the body and blood of Christ shed for you.” Pastor Amy will consecrate the “to go” communion cups and we will deliver a three-month supply to you at your home. Please call or email the church right away to say “yes” to communion at home. Make a Joyful Noise at Home We can’t sing in the sanctuary, so we are relying on those of you who are at home and able to sing loudly, to make a joyful noise for all of us! And to that end, we have hymnals we would love to loan to you for the duration of the pandemic. We will be happy to deliv-er one along with the communion elements. Call or email the church to say “yes” to a hymnal at home. Check Out the Bulletin and Scriptures You can now access the weekly bulletin and Scripture readings on our website! Go to www.flcnewrock.org and click on “Weekly Bulletins” to follow along during worship. (continued on pg. 10)
