Northwest Territories GNWT Campaign 2016 Change starts here. nwt.unitedway.ca Help us grow even larger - donate in 2016 Over the past three years, we’ve seen our Community Investment Fund grow from just over $60,000 to $90,000 to just over $150,000 last year. This year, we’re hoping to increase this fund to $170,000. Since we’ve been getting bigger, we’ve been able to pilot a multi-year funding opportunity for non- profits to apply for. In 2015, the organization chosen was the NWT Breast Health/ Breast Cancer Action Group who received a commitment of $45,000 over three years. Our Community Investment Committee chooses to invest in projects and non- profits that fall into our three focus categories: • From poverty to possiblity • Health people, healthy communities • All that kids can be. Donate to the United Way NWT and watch change start right here in the North! Word from the Co-Chairs Colleagues: Change starts here. Simple, but compelling words that both of us believe wholeheartedly. We’re very proud to be co-chairs of the 2016 GNWT United Way Workplace Campaign. Our organizations have a common heart - you—GNWT public servants. Last year, the United Way invested over $150,000 in deserving non- profits territory-wide. We believe that our combined effort will ensure this year’s GNWT campaign is a success, and grows even stronger. From October 21 - November 25, join us in making the 14th GNWT Workplace Campaign a true reflection of our collective generosity. Change starts here. Simple, but compelling words that both of us believe wholeheartedly. We’re very proud to be co-chairs of the 2016 GNWT United Way Workplace Campaign. Our organizations have a common heart - you—GNWT public servants.

From October 21 - November 25, join us in making the 14th GNWT Workplace Campaign a true reflection of our collective generosity. The Fort Smith Ecumenical Group manages the local Food Bank in Fort Smith, and that is not an easy feat. Because students are back at the College in Fort Smith, the Food Bank has to add volume to their usual 40 families served.

Thanks to the generous support of donors, the Food Bank received funds that they used to purchase more of the canned goods, dry items and children’s treats that are often requested by families accessing the Food Bank.

This year, the Fort Smith Food Bank received wonderful surprises from the local community gardeners where fresh potatoes, carrots, zucchini, cucumbers and onions were donated to them at the end of the growing season.

Linda Mabbitt, coordinator of the Food Bank said: “I am humbled by the giving hearts that keep places like the food banks open.” The United Way NWT is honored to be a part of this change.

Food Rescue (Yellowknife) - “2 million pounds of food”

HELP US GROW EVEN LARGER: 2016 (GNWT) 3

The United Way NWT has proudly supported Food Rescue (Yellowknife) for a number of years. Food Rescue is an organization that collects food from grocery stores, wholesalers, mining companies, expeditors and other businesses and redistributes it to non-profits across Yellowknife. Since their inception, they have surpassed 2 million pounds of food collected. In the last year, 96% or over 158,000 kilograms of food was distributed back to the community thanks to Food Rescue.

The United Way NWT helps Food Rescue subsidize the salary for their driver, who picks up an average of 700 kilograms of food each day and delivers hundreds of kilograms of food each day as well. Food Rescue mostly operates thanks to the help of volunteers, about 30 of them! Food Rescue also participates in the City’s Compost Program and are passionate about recycling all of their glass, plastic, cardboard and box board.

The United Way NWT is so proud to be a part of this organization that is fundamental to the success of dozens of non-profits all over Yellowknife.

Word from a recipient:“Thanks to the United Way NWT, women across the NWT will have access to up-to-date breast health support and breast can-cer survivors will have people to support them in their journey.”

Girl Guides at Camp Dechinta

The United Way NWT was instrumental in kick starting the Girl Guides camp cabin rebuild which will provide an upgraded, fully functioning and readily accessible campsite for the Girl Guides to experience camping in all seasons. The upgraded facilities will also make it possible for the Girl Guides to explore opportunities to make the camp available to other youth-oriented organizations.

The United Way NWT funding was the catalyst that allowed Girl Guides to purchase the materials necessary to restore the cabin interior. The volunteers, who have contributed their time and expertise in undertaking the work, have transformed the space. The combination of both has generated the goodwill that will fuel subsequent stages of this community led project.

If you’re involved with a non-profit looking to get some funding, please consider applying for our Community Investment Fund!

The application will be posted on our website by the end of October, and our deadline is December 1st 2016. Money is awarded in February 2017. This is a simple application that shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete.

If you would like more information, don’t hesitate to contact us.
