Is cardiac rehabilitation for me?Cardiac rehabilitation will benefit you if you are recovering from an acute cardiac episode, such as a heart attack, open heart surgery, and angioplasty/ stent, or have a chronic cardiac condition, such as heart failure.

Our aims Our purpose is to help you return to a normal and satisfying life in the shortest possible time and to encourage a lifestyle that limits recurrence of cardiac events. We aim to:

> Assist your return to a maximum level of physical, emotional and social functioning, ideally to that which preceded your cardiac illness

> Provide you with knowledge on how to manage your health and modify the risk factors that may have contributed to the development of your heart disease

> Improve your overall quality of life.

symptom managementIndividual psychological support in managing stress, dealing with fear and adjustment to new exercise capabilities following cardiac event is available. One on one dietetics input is also provided as required. Return to work rehabilitation can be organised for those patients returning to work.

Private health cover Epworth Rehabilitation has funding agreements for rehabilitation with most private health funds as well as the TAC, WorkSafe and Veterans’ Affairs. Epworth Patient Administration can provide you information about fees as requested.

Our outpatient program Our outpatient program has been designed with evidence-based standards and recommendations as outlined by the National Heart Foundation’s Recommended Framework for Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Our program runs twice weekly for six weeks. Each session incorporates both exercise and education components. Topics include:

> Understanding the heart and cardiac risk factors > Principles of exercise > Activity guidelines – returning to work, driving > Cardiac medications > Cardiac nutrition – healthy cooking and eating, food

label reading and eating out > Stress management > Thoughts and emotions, relationship issues
