Executive MessageTHEN – Each of us needs to ensure the people who we elect to represent us locally, provincially and nationally are committed to a Dementia Strategy that can be adopted by all levels of government to affect changes in health care.

LAST – but certainly not least, we need to support family caregivers who are struggling with the overwhelming emotional and financial hardships of providing care.

A study released earlier this year tells us that in Manitoba alone, family caregivers provide 9 Million hours of care each year. Think about what 9 million hours of staff time means to corporate budgets. In 30 years, if nothing changes, this number will increase to 22 Million hours. But change is possible, and within our reach. The work we do today is an investment in helping our children and grandchildren cope with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Our 2009-10 Annual Report will give you more details of the work that the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba does every day. We hope that you will continue to support our cause and our organization.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most widespread of a large class of disorders that clinically are known as “dementias”, which are diseases characterized by a progressive deterioration of thinking, ability and of memory. Alzheimer’s disease is a disease of the brain, in which nerve cells die and their connections with other nerve cells are lost.

In most cases, the disease progresses slowly, but the rate of decline is extremely variable and changes from person to person. In many instances it may be preceded by a few years of Mild Cognitive Impairment, a condition in which true dementia is absent, but nevertheless memory and cognitive functions are detectably reduced. In Alzheimer’s disease, forgetfulness gradually increases, and in the later stages even close family members may fail to be recognized. The ability to carry out normal activities such as reading, driving, and cooking gradually decreases, as does the ability to make judgments and appropriate responses to everyday issues.

There can also be behavioral changes such as uninhibited behaviour, repetitive actions, delusional thinking, depression, disturbances of balance and movement, and an inability for people to find their way even in familiar surroundings. In time the affected persons become unable to look after themselves and caregivers become essential for all aspects of daily living. Alzheimer’s disease is ultimately fatal, and death usually occurs within seven to 10 years after diagnosis.

What is Alzheimer’s disease and dementia?

Program Highlights“I don’t feel alone anymore, I know where to go for help.”

“It’s really cathartic for me. I slept well after the first meeting.”

There are 30 Caregiver Support Groups who meet in communities across Manitoba. In total, 207 meetings were held and 149 people attended a group for the first time during the past year.

There are two Teleconference support groups available.

A group focusing on the needs of care partners of younger people with dementia was inaugurated in September of 2009.

1,007 people are currently registered with our Safely Home program. Information sessions about Safely Home were provided to Search and Rescue Volunteers, Winnipeg City Police Cadets and RCMP. A total of 190 Emergency Service personal were reached.

We’re offering bite-sized information sessions on special topics. Last year, a Financial Assistance through Tax Credits session was developed. A session on Elder Driving is planned for next year.

60% of participants said they could now complete tax benefits forms with ease.

Last year, 3,173 individual services were provided to Manitobans who requested information or support about dementia. Clients received these services via telephone calls, office visits or e-mails. There were 2,620 open client files at the close of the year.

“I feel safer now. There’s a plan in place in case my Dad wanders away again.”

The Alzheimer Society hosted four weekly support groups for people with dementia last year with 39 participants.

Our “Living with Alzheimer’s Disease” workshops were attended by 135 caregivers. Over 90% of participants indicate an increase in knowledge of dementia and caregiving skills.

“Very informative, very good ideas – it will make our journey easier.”

“It’s good for me to meet others in the same situation and to have some laughs.”

The baby boomers are aging. Today, over half a million Canadians have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. In just one generation – by the time our children or grandchildren become adults - there will be over one million Canadians with dementia. The numbers are scary. This is not about our parent’s generation – this is about ours.

We need to act now. We can’t just sit back and wait. Hope lies in making changes today that will lessen dementia’s crippling effect on our families, health care system and economy.

So what can we do to help stem this rising tide?

FIRST - Each of us needs to learn about prevention and caring for our brain health… the benefits of physical activity, changes we can make in our diet and other parts of our lives, to reduce our risk of developing dementia. And we need to learn about the importance of early diagnosis.

NEXT – We need to significantly increase the amount of money spent on research, to learn more about prevention, and discover a treatment that will delay the onset of dementia and reduce its impact substantially.

T“I will look more deeply into our residents’ feelings, needs and wants - a more person-centred approach.”

“It was helpful to learn how to pace myself with people with dementia; I learned that little things matter.”

The Alzheimer Society continues to be a sought after presenter at all kinds of public meetings including church groups, employee groups and sororities. A collective audience of 2,607 people attended our 80 presentations in 2009-10.

Alzheimer Society staff and volunteers made 35 presentations to 923 Grade three students across Manitoba.

52 displays were presented at health fairs, conferences and community events.

“This talk changed the way I shop for groceries!”The Healthy Brain Forum in Winnipeg was attended by 1,000 people . The forum focused on the impact that food choices have on the way the brain ages.

3 program highlights

“Faces light up, eyes shine, laughter is heard, and words are recalled when sensory connections are made.”

The Alzheimer Touch Quilts Project was launched with sponsorship from Blue Cross and Manitoba Community Services Council. So far, 185 quilts have been donated to residents of personal care homes in Manitoba.

Our P.I.E.C.E.S. education program was delivered to 57 senior leaders and to 364 frontline staff at personal care homes during the fiscal year.

Our annual conference was attended by 462 professional caregivers.

A total of 66 educational opportunities were offered to professional groups with a combined attendance of 1,468.

“Very interesting and definitely an eye opener as to how my Mom is now dealing with aging.”

Our Virtual Dementia Tour provides a valuable experiential opportunity for health care providers and family members. The Tour was conducted at 16 sites with 524 participants last year.

The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba offers up to two fellowships to graduate students each year. The purpose of these awards is to encourage graduate student interest and research activity related to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. One award was presented this year.

Jillian LeMaistre is a PHD student, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Medicine. She is studying astrocytes and their relationship to blood flow in the brain.

a healthy diet, exercise, boosting insulin receptors while controlling insulin levels and combining those efforts with current drugs that obstruct Amyloid beta buildup.

“Advances in medicine now allow us to expect a healthy lifespan up to 85 or 90. Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related dementias are only the most recent of the deadly diseases that humanity has focused on. From infectious disease like polio to cancer and heart disease, there has never been an affliction that we haven’t been able to at least push back and effectively treat to some degree, when we put a significant amount of research into it. Alzheimer’s disease will eventually be treatable, perhaps sooner rather than later,” says Dr. Glazner confidently.

leaving the brain more vulnerable to the effects of the disease,” said Dr. Glazner.

“We have evidence that the main component of toxic Alzheimer’s plaques, namely Amyloid beta, may normally act to stimulate the insulin pathway, thus protecting the brain. However, too much insulin or Amyloid can overload the insulin system causing the protective response to be lost. Amyloid then builds up to a higher concentration until it starts to amass and form a toxic compound. In the absence of the protection given by the insulin system, this now toxic Amyloid can cause damage to brain cells. The whole system, once it starts to fail, can then collapse in a vicious feedback cycle. It may all start from the loss of the insulin protective system.”

“Some of the drugs we have out there are meant to try to knock down Amyloid beta and have not worked at all,” said Dr. Glazner.

“And that may be because Amyloid in its natural form is protective.”

He believes that the future of Alzheimer’s treatment may come in the form of a combination therapy that would include

The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba is proud to announce groundbreaking research being funded in 2010.

Dr. Gordon Glazner, principal investigator in the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders at St. Boniface Research Centre is leading a team looking into the link between diabetes and dementia.

In recent years, scientists have found evidence that diabetes (especially type two diabetes) and dementia are very closely related. The questions remained though, why and how?

Dr. Glazner and his team of researchers have discovered that there is a specific relationship between the two diseases.

“It has to do with insulin and how the insulin system changes when a person has diabetes,” explained Dr. Glazner.

Type two diabetes is a condition that develops when your body stops responding to insulin properly. The brain requires support from the insulin system to maintain health and resistance to stress and damage.

“We suspect that this support is reduced or lost in Alzheimer’s disease early on,

ResearchIn 2009-10, The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba directed $75,774 to fund research approved through the National Research Program of the Alzheimer Society of Canada. We are proud to announce that we will be doubling our research commitment in 2010-11.

Graduate Student Fellowship AwardAt least 100 years ago, it was discovered that blood flow in the brain is increased when the brain is active. Jill explains that for the past 10 years or more, it has been known that astroctyes (a cell in the brain) affect neurons (a more active cell in the brain). It is believed that astroctyes sense what neurons need, and release chemicals that affect blood flow. but the precise mechanism remains unclear. Research into this process could lead to a greater understanding of astrocyte and vascular dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease and

hopefully, spur the development of new treatments.

“I am so happy to receive this award from the Alzheimer Society,” says Jill. “I don’t think most people appreciate that being a science student is a full-time job. The opportunity to receive extra funding allows me to focus 100% on my work. It’s incredibly important to me.”
