DRY. WARM. SAFE. AT WORK.™

At Helly Hansen Workwear, we have one job: to

design clothes that keep professionals DRY, WARM

AND SAFE AT WORK. Our founder, Captain Helly

Juell Hansen, began tackling this challenge back

in 1877, when he invented waterproof clothing

for seafarers and fishermen. Now it’s up to us to

continue rising to the challenge day after day.

Over 130 years of dedication to innovation and

quality have made Helly Hansen Workwear one of

the world’s biggest and best workwear companies.

Today we are a leading manufacturer of workwear

for the new generation of tradespeople. Style and

quality go hand in hand.

We combine fashion and design experience with

knowledge of the raw forces of nature that our

workwear has to withstand. The result: workwear

that looks good while protecting people who work

in the most extreme conditions on land and at sea.

Dressed in Helly Hansen Workwear, you will feel the

benefit of our 130 years of experience.

Designed with emphasis on innovation, safety and

comfort, our workwear makes day-to-day work

easier, safer and more enjoyable. We combine

advanced textiles with functional design, and test

our products under the most extreme conditions

with one goal in mind:

To live up to our promise to keep you

DRY, WARM AND SAFE AT WORK.

Helly Juell Hansen applied linseed oil to the outside of his work clothes to provide weather protection. It was simple, functional and a truly meaningful innovation, and is the first step in making garments for the professional worker tailored to his needs.

Helly Hansen wins its first award for water proof gear for fishermen at the Paris Expo. Water proof clothing had never been seen before. The award became the first of several.

Helly Hansen launches Linox fabric. It is a breakthrough: the surface is waterproof, glossy and attractive, without the stickiness of oil.

Helly Hansen launches Lin-o-Let – a thinner quality especially made for the female.

Helly Hansen launches kapok life jackets; these safe, comfortable floatation devices represent a real advance for safety at sea.

Helly Hansen patent a sealing technique for seams, Microweld ™- the first 100% waterproof seams are created.

Helly Hansen begins work on fibre pile – a new method for knitting the fibres together is patented and the layering system is born.

Helly Hansen invents the Pro-Pile, the first ever fleece garment.

Helly Hansen start experiment with performance underwear – the true “three layer” concept is born.

Helly Hansen launches PVC foam with closed cells for use in life jackets. The foam is the preferred floatation material 30 years later.

The launch of Lifa® - a revolutionary, high-performance sports underwear. A range of polypropylene bodywear that moves the moisture away from the skin better than any other fabric, transporting perspiration to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates.

Helly Hansen launches the Survival suit, produced in Moss, Norway.

Helly Hansen is the first company in Europe to offer waterproof and breathable garments.

HH fibre pile becomes the leading insulating garment for work in harsh conditions – products turn into fashion in the late 70’s.

Helly Hansen launches Helly Tech® - a unique coating that simultaneously releases perspiration moisture, while preventing external moisture from penetrating the material.

Helly Hansen introduces Equipe Airflow Vent System to the ski market – an adjustment feature that allows varying degrees of airflow during activity and maximum warmth when inactive.

Helly Hansen is the official supplier of all apparel for volunteers at the ’94 Lillehammer winter Olympics.

Helly Hansen Workwear wins the award “Prize for good design” for our IMS/ Click on design. The prize was given out by the Norwegian Design Council.

After 127 years, Helly Hansen launches its first ever footwear collection with the Hydrator, Level 10 and Latitude 60 sailing shoes.

The ShoreHike dinghy sailing boot wins the prestigious Hederspris for God Design – Norway’s highest accolade for product design.

Launch of best performing baselayer for cold conditions. HH warm baselayers combine Lifa® technology with non musled Merino wool. This product goes onto be a best seller and wins multiple “best in test” awards around the globe.

Launch of Odin outdoor collection combing HellyTech® 02 technology, YKK’s revolutionary Aquaseal zipper and the Fusion Modular system. Already in its first year of production, the Odin line won Germany’s Red Dot design award.

Cooperation with Ericsson Racing team for the 2008/2009 Volvo Ocean racing leads to major findings in waterproof construction for extreme offshore racing. Complete new sailing pant package launched one year later.

HH launches the Chelsea polyester/cotton collection for professional workers.

The Atlas Flow Down is the first ever combination of 3 layer membrane technology together with down paddings. Creates a warm yet breathable performance ski jacket.

Launch of the Ask&Embla collection. Helly Hansen clashes its performance heritage with high fashion to create an eclectic collection of urban outerwear.

3 LAYER SYSTEM

WIND / WET / COLD

WIND.WET.COLD.

“WE DEVELOPED THE THREE-LAYER PRINCIPLE, WHICH PROVIDES COMFORT IN THE FACE OF EXTREME WIND, COLD, RAIN AND SNOW IN THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST WORKPLACES.”

Helly Hansen Workwear invented the 3-Layer System™, which

keeps you dry, warm and safe at work – even if you’re exposed

to extreme cold, wind, sea conditions or rain in your work

environment. The base layer, insulation layer and protection

layer work together to create the optimum combination of

insulation, ventilation and protection from the elements.

Tradespeople, forestry workers, fishermen and others

working in the Scandinavian climate have been helping

us develop reliable workwear for generations. The results

include world-leading technology such as HELLY TECH®

breathable waterproof clothing and the internationally

renowned LIFA® products, which keep you dry and

comfortable even in the worst weather conditions.

LIFA DRY is made of 100% polypropylene filament yarns, and does not absorb perspiration. Moisture is transported to the next layer of clothing. LIFA DRY is recommended for high energy activities at cold and cool temperatures.

LIFA DRY CONCEPT:

During high energy activity the body produces excess heat; equivalent to 1.000W per hour. The functional baselayer concept is all about creating a driest possible microclimate next to the skin during and after high energy activities to avoid the chilling effect when the activity level is reduced and moisture evaporates from the skin. When perspiration evaporates, the baselayer fabric steals energy or warmth from the body surface; the body is chilled.

LIFA WARM is a hybrid construction with polypropylene on the inside and wool on the outside. Wool reinforces insulation properties. LIFA WARM is recommended for moderate activities at cold temperatures.

LIFA WARM CONCEPT:

It’s air providing insulation properties, not the “hardwear”. The HH hollowfiber has a core filled with air that insulates. Less expensive compact polypropylene is clearly less effective. The hybrid construction keeps polypropylene next to the skin and wool on the outside. Wool is an excellent insulator because of its shell construction trapping air. WARM is recommended for colder temperatures or when the activity level is low.

US STANDARDSRELATED TO HELLY HANSEN WORKWEAR

In the United States, there are few standards that specify or

classify the performance of protective clothing for many of

the products manufactured by Helly Hansen. The American

National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the primary U.S. standards

development organization for writing full product specifications

which include ANSI/ISEA 107 and ANSI/ISEA 207 for high visibility

safety apparel. ASTM International is another U.S. organization

that also prepares relevant specifications for protective apparel,

but also provides standardized test methods that establish how

protective apparel is evaluated.

The following are six key U.S. standards that apply to Helly

Hansen products:

ANSI107 – High visibility clothing and public safety vests

ANSI 207 – High visibility clothing and public safety vests

ASTM F 2302 – Flame and heat resistant clothing

ASTM D 6413 – Flame resistance test method

ASTM F 1506 – Electrical arc protective textile-based clothing

ASTM F 1891 – Electrical arc protective rainwear

ASTM F 1671 – Blood borne pathogen test method

ANSI-ISEA 107 (2010)High visibility clothing

ANSI 107 addresses clothing intended to provide visibility of the wearer under both daytime and nighttime conditions. The standard sets requirements for the minimum area and color performance of fluorescent background materials for daytime visibility. The standard also sets minimum requirements for reflective striping, which provides nighttime visibility when illuminated by vehicle headlights or other light sources. Three garment classes are established based on the respective areas of fluorescent background and reflective striping materials. Two levels of photometric

performance are also based on the brightness and intensity of the reflected light of the reflective striping. The above icon is used to show compliance of Helly Hansen products with this standard. The garment class and photometric level are shown below the icon and standard citation in this catalog.

ASTM F2302Flame and heat resistant clothing

ASTM F2302 is designed to set minimum performance criteria for protective clothing where other specialized standards do not apply. The specification requires minimum flame resistance using the ASTM D6413 test method (described below) and heat resistance, as based on an International test method, ISO 17493. The specification requires that clothing materials show no more than a 2-second after flame and 6-inch char length when tested to ASTM D6413. For heat resistance, materials can not ignite, melt, drip, or separate, or shrink more than 10% when placed in an oven for 5 minutes at 500oF. Reusable garment materials are tested new and after 10 cycles of laundering. Helly Hansen product meeting this standard are identified with the icon shown above.

WARNING: PRODUCTS THAT SHOW ACCEPTABLE AFTERFLAME AND/OR HEAT RESISTANCE PER ASTM F2302 ARE NOT INTENDED FOR DIRECT FLAME CONTACT OR FOR PROLONGED HIGH HEAT EXPOSURE. THESE PRODUCTS WILL NOT PROTECT AGAINST ALL FLAME AND HEAT EXPOSURES. CONDUCT A HAZARD AND RISK ASSESSMENT TO DETERMINE THE SUITABILITY OF THIS PRODUCT FOR YOUR APPLICATION.

US STANDARDS

ASTM F2302Flame resistance test method

ASTM D6413 is the preferred test method for demonstrating material flame resistance performance for flame-resistant clothing. The test measures the time a material will continue to burn (called “afterflame time”) and the damaged length (called “char length”) when a cut edge of the material is vertically exposed to a 1½ inch high methane flame for 12 seconds. The test method does not set specific acceptance

criteria. However, the general industry practice and use of this test method in other flame-resistant clothing standards are to accept materials that show afterflame times of 2 seconds or less, and char lengths of 6 inches or less, without evidence of melting or dripping by the material under these test conditions. When flame resistance claims are only made for Helly Hansen products, the icon shown above is used:

ASTM F1506Electical arc textile based protective clothing

ASTM F1891Electrical Arc Protective Rainwear

ASTM F1671Blood Borne Pathogen Test Method

ASTM F1506 is a standard specification that establishes test methods, minimum physical and thermal performance criteria, and labeling for textile-based apparel used by workers who may be exposed to thermal hazards of momentary electric arcs and open flames. The garment material is tested for insulation during a simulated electrical arc exposure.

ASTM F1891 is a standard specification that establishes test methods, minimum physical and thermal performance criteria, a suggested sizing guide, and labeling for rainwear used by workers who may be exposed to thermal hazards of momentary electric arcs and open flames. The specification includes requirements for material insulation

ASTM F1671 is a test method that measures the passage of blood-borne pathogens through clothing material and seams. In this testing, specimens of workwear materials are individually placed in a test cell and exposed to liquid containing a non-harmful surrogate microorganism. This microorganism simulates Hepatitis B and C Viruses and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (that causes AIDS). A sophisticated assay procedure is used that is able to detect a single penetrating virus, thus establishing the basis for clothing material viral penetration resistance. Test results are reported as “pass” if no virus is detected. Helly Hansen products that provide passing results for clothing material and seams are identified with the above icon.

The test measures the energy required to cause a second degree burn, which is called an arc thermal protective value (ATPV). Garment materials are also tested for flame resistance, physical strength, colorfastness and laundry shrinkage. Helly Hansen products meeting this standard are shown with the following icon:

during a simulated electrical arc exposure. In this test, the measured arc thermal protective value (ATPV) must be greater than 5 calories per square centimeter. Rainwear materials are also evaluated for flame resistance, strength, and water penetration resistance. Rainwear seams are also evaluated for water penetration resistance.

WARNING: WHILE HELLY HANSEN ATTESTS THAT THE CLOTHING MATERIAL AND SEAMS PASS ASTM F1671, CONDUCT AN ASSESSMENT OF WORKPLACE HAZARDS TO DETERMINE THE SUITABILITY OF THIS WORKWEAR FOR THE INTENDED APPLICATION AND IF ADDITIONAL PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED. MAINTAIN WORKWEAR IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CARE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PRODUCT LABEL READ THE USER INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO USE TO UNDERSTAND THE LIMITATIONS OF THE RESPECTIVE WORKWEAR PRIOR TO USE. THIS WORKWEAR WILL NOT PROTECT YOU UNDER ALL CONDITIONS OF EXPOSURE TO BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS OR OTHER HAZARDS.

EN 342Protection From Cold

EN 343RAIN PROTECTION

EN 342 establishes requirements for garments intended for protecting the wearer in cold environments. The standard requires testing of garment materials for insulation, air permeability, water vapor permeability, and tear strength. A minimum value for thermal insulation is required with the value

EN 343 sets criteria for rainwear in terms of the waterproof performance, strength, and breathability (water vapor resistance). Both rainwear material and seams are evaluated for waterproofness and are ranked using three classes of performance.

reported on the label. Three classes of air permeability performance are provided with class 3 as the highest, and two classes of water vapor permeability performance are set, with class 2 the highest. Helly Hansen products meeting this standard are shown with the above icon.

There are also three classes of water vapor resistance performance, while minimum requirements are set for material and seam strength. Helly Hansen products meeting this standard are shown with the above icon.
