Hello, and welcome to the Summer Reading Club! We are going to go on incredible adventures this summer — and you’ll be keeping your brain sharp, too! Here are some of the activities we’ll do together in the Summer Reading Club: Read with friends What is a friend? A friend might be someone you know from school, a parent, an aunt, a sibling, a pet or even your stuffed animals! Why not look at a book with your teddy bear? Choose from our Social- Emotional Learning Books to discover a world of characters who can become your friends, too! Follow along as these characters express their feelings, make friends and experience new things for the first time. Have you ever had some of those same feelings or experiences? Learn about others In the Summer Reading Club, you are going to have a chance to learn about how lots of different people live, in your own city or town, and all over the world. Our Diverse & Inclusive Books will introduce you to places and characters; some will seem familiar and others will be new. How are you different from the people in each book? How are you similar? Travel the world With our Global Books, you can travel the world, without even needing to leave your home! Does your family have traditions that come from another part of the world? Do you know people who have visited or lived in other countries? If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? Build a greener planet Did you know that every single one of us needs to do our part to take care of planet Earth? With our Books for a Greener Planet, you can discover how we can help — or accidentally hurt! — all the living things around us. What are some of the things you can do to be a Planet Protector? Ready to start your adventure? Decorate your membership certificate and hang it proudly on the wall! Then decorate and give out invitations to as many friends as you would like. Maybe you’d like to start a regular Summer Reading Club play date with your friends! Your first official club activity is to read books that feature interesting characters (also known as your new friends!). You can find a great selection in our Books for Social-Emotional Learning reading list. Fill out your Reading Log as you read the books. Then, use the My Favorite Character activity to write and draw about all the characters you’ve enjoyed meeting. Stay tuned for more official club activities throughout the summer. Welcome again to the Summer Reading Club! Happy Reading, Stefanie Paige Wieder, M.S.Ed Child Development Specialist Senior Director of Product, Barefoot Books
