French Resources at HPL Title Slide

Hello and Welcome. My name is Meghan Tinmouth, and I am a Community Youth Librarian

with the Hamilton Public Library. I’m here tonight to talk about the different French Language

resources we have available for children at the Hamilton Public Library.

 Books

We do have a selection of French language titles in our children’s collection, including fiction

and non-fiction selections. These materials can also be placed on hold and be sent to any location in

Hamilton, and are searchable in our catalogue.

 Accessing French Books in the catalogue

In order to search for French books, click on the advanced search button on the top right hand

corner of the screen under the search button, as circled on this slide.

 Advanced Search Page

Once on the advanced search page, select “French” from the list of languages in the

“Language” dropdown menu. Then select “Children” in the “Audience” drop down menu. Finally, once

you have selected the language and age group, you can do a keyword search for a more specific

material in the keyword bar. In this case, we have searched for the series “Geronimo Stilton”. Finally,

click on the search button.

 French Language Search Results

Clicking “Search” will give you a list of results specific to your search. All results will be in

French, and will be in our collection. You can then sort by format, content, topic and location. Any

circulating book in our collection can be sent to any location in Hamilton, including books in French.

You can search this catalogue from home by going to hpl.ca and clicking on “catalogue”.

 Ebooks

We have a selection of ebooks for children as well. All of our ebooks are provided by

Archambault. All of the ebooks we have for children are fiction. You can access this collection through

our website and with your library card and pin number.

 Accessing the Children’s ebook Collection

Go to hpl.ca. Hover your mouse over “HPL Online”, then” Media”, and finally click on “French

ebooks”.

 French ebook Page

Once you click on “French ebooks”, this page will appear. Click on “Visit French ebooks Now”.

The website will prompt you to log in with your library card and pin number, as well as select the

library you are from. In this case, you’d select “Hamilton Public Library”.

 In the Collection

Once you have successfully signed in, you will be able to borrow any of the ebooks in this

collection. In order to access the children’s collection, click on “Children’s books” on the menu on the

left side of the page.

 Children’s ebooks

Once you click on that button, a selection of ebooks for children will appear. If you click on the

cover, you will be given the option of borrowing the book, or putting the book on hold. These books

can be read using Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, or an Android or Apple tablet. These titles

cannot be sorted further, but do appear in alphabetical order. You can also do specific title searches in

the search bar on the top right hand side of the page.

Tumblebooks in French

Tumblebooks are interactive ebooks for children that can be read on your internet browser.

The tumblebook guides the child through the story word by word. Tumblebooks also includes quizzes

and language games that help with reading comprehension and vocabulary. These titles are all Fiction.

Accessing Tumblebooks

To access tumblebooks, go to hpl.ca, hover over “HPL Online”, “Media”, and finally click on

“Tumblebooks”.

French Tumblebooks

On the top right hand corner of the screen, you will see a drop down menu specifying the

language you would like. Select “French”. The page will refresh, and the French language

Tumblebooks will appear. From this homepage, you can access the books, novels, videos, games, and

graphic novels all in French.

Digital Databases

It is important to have French language nonfiction materials when researching for science or

history projects. We do have nonfiction print books in our collection. We do, however, have a

database available through our website with reputable nonfiction French resources. This is the

Canadian Encyclopedia.

Accessing the Canadian Encyclopedia

On our hpl.ca/kids page, hover your mouse over “HPL Online”, then click on “Online

Resources”.

Click on “Encyclopedias”, and then click on “Canadian Encyclopedia”.

French Canadian Encyclopedia

Once you get to the Canadian Encyclopedia homepage, there will be a language button on the

top right hand corner of the screen where you can switch the language from English to French. Click

on “FR” to change to French.

French Canadian Encyclopedia

Once you switch the language, you will be able to search for and read nonfiction articles in

French.

French Homework Help Club

There is a Homework Help Club available at the Terryberry branch. The club runs from

October until April on Mondays and Thursdays, depending on capacity. Check out hpl.ca for more

details.
