We would like to Acknowledge the Wodi Wodi people who are the Traditional Custodians of this Land on which our school stands upon. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present of the Dharawal Nation and extend that respect to all Aboriginal people. 11 Fletcher Street, Helensburgh, 2508 Ph: (02) 4294 1332 or (02) 4294 1050 email: [email protected] web http://www.helensburgh-ps.com Issue 3 Monday, 25 February 2019, Week 5 Term 1 Helensburgh Highlights PRINCIPALS REPORT Permission Notes A note pack was sent home recently which provides the school with valuable information about your child. Please ensure that you send all of these notes back as soon as possible. Health Care Plans In the note pack there was a request to provide information about your childs health. We welcome this information even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child, however, it is also important to let us know if your childs health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Several students in our school have allergies which cause severe Anaphylaxis. Some allergens are nuts, eggs, sesame seeds and shellfish. Helensburgh PS would appreciate the support of families in providing a safe learning environment for all students by avoiding these foods wherever possible when packing healthy lunches for your children. Assembly Our first school assembly will be held on Thursday, 28 February commencing at 2pm. Please feel free to come along. Unfortunately, I am required to attend a Community of Schools Principal Meeting at the same time and would have loved to see our students perform. School Interviews A note will be going out this week which will explain how parent teacher interviews will operate this year. Interviews will be conducted Wednesday 27 th March and Thursday 28 th March, 3pm to 6pm both days. Each parent teacher interview will be 10 minutes in duration, so that all parents have an opportunity to speak to their childs teacher. All of the interviews will be conducted in the school hall. From the parent consultation meetings last year, the end of Term 1 was identified as the best time to conduct interviews. Having interviews too early in the year makes it difficult for teachers to comment on specific learning needs. Conversely, conducting interviews at the end of Term 2 was identified as being too late. We will be using an online booking system which will make it easy for parents and teachers to schedule an interview time. Information will be provided on how to make an online appointment time. Before School Teacher Supervision Teacher supervision of students starts from 8:25am. Please ensure that you do not send your child to school before this time as it is a safety issue. If you need to drop off your child early or pick them up after 3pm, Fun4U, the before and after school provider, is available. Student Welfare As part of the student welfare policy review, the reward system has changed to include opportunities to positively acknowledge expected student behaviour in the playground and in the classroom. Friendlies will be given to students who are doing the right thing in the playground and for receiving achievement awards. When a student receives a friendly, it is placed into a class box. Before the assembly, friendlies are drawn from the class box, and then placed into the stage box. Two lucky students from each stage who are drawn from the stage box spin the chocolate wheel to determine their prize. In addition, all students will work towards achieving a positive behaviour target based on the number of friendlies and class dojo points. If this target is achieved, a school rewards day will be organised at the end of the term. The school has a fortnightly positive behaviour focus for the playground. Currently we are speaking to students about being at the right place at the right time. Also, there is fortnightly learning focus of displaying effort. The school s draft student welfare policy will be distributed explaining the schools reward and discipline system. Ewen Neild Principal

What’s going on in 2K with Mrs King! Wow! We have been working like busy bees in 2K!

In Reading we have been trying to sound like we are talking by using intonation to make our voices

go up and down. We’ve also been practising being visualisers when we read. We want our ‘Brain TV’ to turn on when we are reading so that we can better comprehend what is happening in a text.

Check out our creatures that we described to each other, visualised in our ‘Brain TVs’ and tried to draw.

In Writing, we are learning to write

detailed recounts with correct sentence structure. We look at our success criteria to give ourselves and our

writing buddies’ helpful feedback. We love practising our spelling words in

different ways!

In Mathematics, place value has been hands on and engaging, we love math

groups. We have learnt to read, write, order and model numbers with pictures and equipment to represent them. Place value bingo is one of our favourites! We

are also learning to count forwards and backwards by 10s off the decade. This will help us to add and subtract much more quickly.

In Visual Arts we studied the

colour wheel and looked at famous artworks that showcased warm and cool colours. Check out

what we created to contrast these colours.

CANTEEN NEWS Helensburgh Public School Canteen is a not-for-profit service

for HPS families run by HPS P&C

Emergency Lunches – Policy update At the last P&C meeting a decision was made regarding emergency lunches. The new policy for emergency lunches is as follows: should your child have forgotten their lunch or their online order was not confirmed and processed into the daily print out, your child will receive a note from their teacher to bring to the canteen stating that they do not have any lunch. The canteen will then supply the child with a sandwich and a piece of fruit and will send home an account with the amount owing to advise that a lunch was supplied. This new procedure will help make sure that no child is receiving any food products that the parents wouldn’t approve of them eating. Re-usable bags Don’t forget the canteen stocks and sells re-usable lunch bags in both small and large. Small bags are $13 and large bags are $15. Second Hand Uniforms Just a reminder that the canteen does stock and sell second hand uniform items at a cost of $5 a piece, sizes vary so pop by and see if you can snap yourself up a bargain. If you have any old uniforms that you would like to donate to the second hand pool, please send in at any time during the year. Online ordering To access our on-line ordering system please follow the prompts at www.school24.com.au the school number is 25340963. Purchases for both canteen and uniforms can be made via this website. For those new to the school you will find the “how to order” guides on the school website. Volunteer Raffle Congratulations to the winner of our Term 4 2018 Raffle: Melissa P. We hope you enjoy your raffle prize.

New Volunteers Thank you to the new volunteers that have been sending in notes to be included on the canteen roster. The Term 1 roster is completed in early January so any new volunteers will be added into the upcoming roster for Term 2. The Term 2 roster will be distributed in week 10 of Term 1. I look forward to meeting and working with you soon. Uniform Update Just a reminder that the uniform shop will be closed every Friday. If you have any queries, please drop by the canteen. Melisa - Canteen Supervisor

SWIMMING CARNIVAL What a terrific carnival! The weather was great, allowing many students to swim and have fun. There were some outstanding performances on the day, most notable was from Noah in 6T. Noah broke four school records and he should be commended for his fine swimming ability. However, mostly it was amazing to witness the incredible sportsmanship and spectacular behaviour from the Helensburgh Public School students. Results are set out below. Some students may have come first or second in a race but may not have met the qualifying requirements for the next level. Eligible students should have received notes to attend the Zone Swimming Carnival, which will be held on Thursday, 28th February at Corrimal.
