Technical GlossaryABS A thermoplastic (like polycarbonate) used for the production of helmets. It has a high skin hardness, good impact stength and scratch resistant surfaces. The helmets are produced in one part by an injection moulding procedure under high pressure and high temperature. Tip: Do not add any stickers or do not repaint ABS helmets as solvents in glue or paint can damage them.

AirguardAirguard is highly abrasion and tear resistant and manufactured from a specially developed hollow fi bre (100% polyamide). This hollow fi bre enables a low grammage volume and therefore a very is very comfortable in use. The tiny airpockets support the natural balance of the body and insulate against cold and heat. Furthermore Airguard is extremly water repellent and wind resistant, easy to clean and quick drying. Airguard meets all demands, which represent fi rst-class and modern motorcycle garments.

COOLMAX® A 100% polyester fabric which keeps cool and comfortable. It takes away humidity from the body and dries quickly. It is light and breathable, is very comfortable to wear and is very easy-care.

Amara artifi cial leatherA synthetic leather, made of 60% polyamide and 40% polyurethane, which is not only weatherproof, but also soft and comfortable. Additionally it offers an excellent grip and is therefore often used on the palms of motocross gloves.

Cordura® A high quality polyamide (100%) fabric woven from precision-cut DuPont hollow fi bres. Cordura is more durable and abrasion resistant than other nylons and is particularly suited for protective

clothing. It has a comfortable and natural woven, slighlty structured, appearance.

Direct ventilationComfort ventilation system means that all zippers, which are used in jackets/pants, allow, when opened, air to fl ow throughout the garment via openings in the climate membrane. When the zippers are closed, 100% water and wind resistance is guaranteed.

d3o™ Protectorsintelligent shock absorption

www.d3o.com

An intelligent shock absorbing material containing sensitive molecules which move loosely under normal terms. Therefore the protectors are soft and fl exible and fi t perfectly to the body. On a sudden impact (like an accident), the molecules combine to offer an excellent absorption on impact. The whole process occurs instantaneously and d30 protectors will return to their original state after the impact has subsided and can be used again, without any loss of capability.

Dual protector systemThe dual protector system of the jacket provides the customer the option to integrate an individual required back protector. Beside the special foam pad or the CE protector, a specially developed CE back protector can be used. It has the advantage of additional shoulder and coccyx protection and also high wearing comfort because of the integrated waistband.

ceraspace™ceraspace™ is a new protection fabric technology from Schoeller opening a new dimension in abrasion proofi ng and heat resistance.

When standard textiles are exposed to high temperatures, they become damaged. The 3-dimensional coating of ceraspace™ technology is highly resistant to elevated temperatures and works as a protective space barrier between the textile and a heat source. No melting is possible and the heat-up rate remains low, minimizing the possibility of exposure to harmful heat and abrasion for the wearer.

The new technology owes its outstanding protective properties to a unique composition of special ceramic particles. The special ceramic particles are nearly as hard as diamonds.

Fibreglass Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) material often used in the manufacture of helmets. Several layers of fi bre sheet are laminated by hand and ‘baked’ in a metal mould to create a shell that offers better impact absorption and a longer serviceable lifespan than ABS. It is generally fi ne to apply decals or apply paint to a GRP shell, but be sure to check with the manufacturer’s instructions.

GORE-TEX®

The GORE TEX® membrane has over 1.4 billion microscopic pores per square centimetre. These pores are around 20,000 times smaller than a water molecule, however 700 times bigger than a water

vapour molecule. Therefore the GORE TEX® membrane is durable water and wind resistant and at the same time very breathable.

The result: Rain can´t get in and wind is kept away but sweat can get out.

To guarantee absolute weather resistance, GORE TEX® products are sealed by the GORE SEAM TAPE technology. This tape seales every small hole which occurs when sewing cloth out of GORE TEX®. To fulfi l the special requirements in all applications, GORE TEX® has developed different membra-nes and technologies, which are used in the particular products.

In each chapter of our GORE TEX® garments and gloves you will fi nd further information about these technologies and products.

Heros®-Tec Heros®-Tec consists of 100% polyester fabric and is a synthetic fi bre with linear macromolecules used in various applications. The basic characteristics of polyester are elasticity and shape retaining ‘memory’, along with low moisture absorption and high tear resistance.

Kevlar® Ceramic Ultra-tough Kevlar® material treated with a ceramic polymer matrix to provide the highest standard of abrasion, tear, cut and heat resistance on the areas of gloves which need it most.

Leather The ‘2nd skin’ of motorcyclists is still the toppeforming material regarding safety and abrasion in comparison with nearly all textil materials. HELD leather marks a high abraision and tear resistance, high breathability and wearing comfort and is, with the right care, extremely durable. Leather garments should be fi tted as tight as possible in order to fi rmly hold the protectors in place. While wearing leather garments, they ‘break in’ and mould to the body.

Leather – TFL CoolTM

Revolutionary treatment for dark leather which helps to refl ect solar radiation in the same way that white leather would, due to the special TFL Cool™ System. The temperature on the leather drops

up to 20°C and additionally and provides a cool wearing comfort of up to 12°C difference with solar radiation. The improved UV resistance of Cool-leather also increases the garment´s lifespan.

TFL Cool™ items should only be treated with transparent dubbin, as described in the garments care instructions. When cleaned correctly, the Cool-effect will last the duration of the garments life.

Heating in direct sunlight:

Leather – Pittards® (Hairsheep)The hairsheep is a cross between a sheep and goat, only found in some African countries. Its hide is soft and comfor-table, like goatskin, but it has a more dense structure and therefore it is much more stable. The picture shows a test result in chemical sweat for 24 hours. On the left with Pittards® hairsheep special leather WR 100 x, on the right without.

Pittards® special leather is resistant against humidity and aggressive sweat. The leather still remains soft and comfor-table after drying without shrinking. www.pittards.com

Leather – Kangaroo hide Many of the existing 48 species of kangaroo are protected. However the unchecked reproduction of the largest breed (called “marcropus gigan-teus”), has become a big problem and culling is therefore allowed under the supervision of the Australian government. Our kangaroo leather is with a special colouration absolutely colour-fast and with it‘s special tanning extremely resistant against humidity and sweat.

Normal leather becomes hard and crumbly and shrinks when getting wet or via sweat. Kangaroo´s only sweat through their tail and tongue, so there are no pores in their hide which is good for the structure of fi bre. While the structure of cow leather gets loose, the structure of kangaroo leather stays fi xed. Additionally, the fi bre structure of kangaroo leather is more intense geared than the structure of cow leather.

NylonTear resistant and durable fi bre, spun from endless Polyamide fi bres, which is often treated for water resistance and specially impregnated to shed dirt. Nylon forms the basis of most textile garments. It’s lightweight and strong construction makes it ideally suited for rainwear.

Outlast® Phase-change material originally developed to protect astronauts against extreme fl uctuations in temperature. Millions of microcap-sules absorb the heat generated through exertion or increased

external temperature to keep you cool, the stored energy is released when you need to warm up. A comfortable temperature in the suit is ensured.

Outlast® reduces the production of sweat and overheating of the body.

Outlast® compared with similar products:

Polartec® Powerdry® with X-Static® fi bresMaterial made of 96% polyester and 4% silver ion (X-Static®) metal fi bres, which has an antistatic effect to wick sweat away from the body and help control odour.

Polyamid Synthetic fi bre which absorbs very little moisture and is extremely abrasion and tear resistant, which makes it ideal in applications where weather protection and durability are the main concerns.

PrimaloftInnovative high-tech fi bre made from fi nest polyester threads which are woven to form an ultra-light felt. This felt insulates to a similar level as feather down, with the

additional advantage that it does not absorb sweat. It is unrivalled for comfort, dry feel, and warmth.

Liprotex C-Dry IIIt´s a polyester fabric, which is water repellent and quick drying, even after repeated use and washing. Based on the special C-Dry II-technic, it possesses an exceptional elasticity.

MembranesPolyurethane or polyester based material designed to keep the body dry, to protect the wearer from wind and to transport sweat to the outside. Therefore membrane equipped clothing has excellent weather protection and at the same time comfort characteristics.

As this material structure has no pores, it is absolutely wind resistant and so the body is prevented from cooling. Seams are welded with a special heat sealed tape to ensure no water can penetrate from the outside.

Depending on the brand of product, the membranes are made out of different basic materials and are mostly sewed as loose foil (“liner”) in the inside of jackets and pants. Special materials and tightly regulated manufacturing guidelines make climate membranes extremely tough, elastic and almost tear resistant.

Safety-Seam The Safety-Seam: It is used at all critical areas such as hips, knees, arms and back as reinforcement of the material.

Standard seams: They connect the layers of the material only with one thread. In case of an accident, the seams would be cut, the layers get loose and protection is not longer ensured.

The additional protection seam: It consists of two seams, one of them is sewed covered. In case of an accident, only the top seam would be damaged, but the covered one would still hold the material of the garment together.

SAS-TECsafety made very special foamwww.sas-tec.de

The visco elastic PU-foam from SAS-TEC consist of renewable “green” raw materials and not from mineral oil. This special material has excellent response characteristic on impact, low weight, high comfort, and excellent, almost linier energy absorption, and therefore body compatible energy-reduction at impact.

Furthermore the special microstructure of the SAS-TEC foam ensures an adapted damping performance: the higher the impact-speed, the bigger the resistance of the foam guaranteeing the best possible Impact protection for your body.

schoeller®-dynatec with ScotchliteA thread with Scotchlite has been included in the fabric. The fabric is made up of microscopic glass beads that refl ect an astonishing amount of white light, increasing visibility and therefore passive safety for the motorcyclist.

Superfabric® brand materialsA mix of 32% polyester and 68% epoxy resin creates a super-tough material which offers full fl exibility as well as extremely high cut and abrasion resistance. Held uses Superfabric® to reinforce crash zones on

certain garments and gloves.

schoeller®-keprotec®

This is a high-quality mixed fabric of cordura and Kevlar and is mostly used in hi impact areas during an accident. It offers very good protection from abbrasion and heat and additionally it is water-repellent because of a special coating.

Silverplus It´s a hygienic fi nishing from the RUDOLF-Group. A base of silver ions prevent the increase of bacteria on textile surfaces. The natural balance of the skin is not effected. These textiles require only a 40°C-wash cycle to remain hygienically clean.

Softshell Highly breathable stretch material, which is elastic, lightweight, warm and fl exible. Outer shell has a water resistant coating, while the inner has a soft fl eece lining which absorbs moisture and wicks it away from the body.

Tefl onNon-stick molecular treatment permanently applied to textile thread, which repels water and enables dirt to be easily washed off.

TricompositeMix of three materials (fi breglass, carbon and Kevlar) used in helmet manufacture to produce particularly light, yet shock resistant shells.

Used LookUsed look makes each piece of leather totally unique. Each hide is specially treated during the last production processes (washing, polishing, greasing, stone washing and so on).

Each garment will get its totally individual look, so the picture shown can differ slightly from the actual product.

LeatherGeneral hints for professional care and cleaning of leather

HELD apparel with leather or leather/textile construction. Each time using your garment, air it well and remove dirt with a soft brush and clean water. Do not store the products in air-tight plastic bags. Never treat leather with solvents or chemical products. Do not use a washing machine or spin-dryer for leather. We recommend only hand wash with tepid water (40°C) and leather detergent. Dry all leather products at room temperature and avoid direct sunlight, artifi cial heating or hairdryers.

Leather careTo slow the natural ageing process of leather (formation of tears, crazing, reduction in strength or waterproofi ng etc.), we recommend you use the following care products.

Remember that some treatments can change the original appearance of leather. You should not be concerned by this, since in use, the material and its characteristics will be improved by such treatment.

ATTENTIONWhen washing leather, it can loose some colour and the soft feel.

Washing instructionsThe correct cleaning of HELD products extend their life cycle and ensure optimal performance.

TextileGeneral hints for professional care and cleaning of textiles

HELD apparel of textile fi bresGarments produces from textile fi bres and fabrics should always be cleaned to prolong its lifecycle. HELD textiles can be washed in the washing machine. However, please use mild textile detergents only, do not use fabric softener. Fill the washing machine no more than half -full.

IMPORTANTBody armour (such as shoulder/elbow or special foam CE back protectors) must always be removed before starting the washing process.

Basic hints for using textile impregnatorsEach time using the garment, air it well and remove dirt with a soft brush and clean water. The fabric has to be clean and humid. The impregnation will be effected after washing.

Please treat the product only outdoors or in well ventilated rooms. The effect of the impregnation developes best after a warm treatment with:Dryer: allowed maximum temperature see care labelHairdryer: 10-15 minutes with a distance of 20-30 cmElectric iron: Level 2, put under a cotton towel

The impregnation should be repeated accordingly the number and duration of wet weather rides. You should re-impregnate waterproof textile garments after each wash to renew the natural roll off-effect of the outer fabric.

Page 9: Held Rider Equipment 2014 Catalog

7

GlovesGeneral hints for professional care and cleaning of leather gloves

All unlined gloves are exposed to sweat, especially on the ball of the thumb and the fi ngertips. This sweat hardens the leather until it breaks. Held gloves are as sweat-resistant as we can make them, but you can extend their durability with the right care.

1. Clean your gloves in tepid water using mild soap or special leather cleanser

2. Wash in clean water afterwards to remove chemical residue3. Wrap the gloves in dry cloth and squeeze (no mangling!)4. Air-dry the gloves (no heating, direct sunlight or dryer)5. Do not use fabric softener6. Put the gloves on when still wet and clench your fi sts

to mould them back into shape7. Put on the dry gloves and knead to make them soft8. Treat the gloves with a leather care product

TIPIf only the inner lining of a climate membrane glove needs to be cleaned, you can use water with a little mild detergent on the inside of the glove without having to clean the (leather or textile) outer shell.

General hints for professional care and cleaning of textile gloves and gloves with climate membrane

1. Wash the gloves by hand with mild soap2. Wash the gloves with clean water afterwards to remove

chemical residues3. Do not squeeze or mangle the wet gloves4. Air-dry the gloves (no heating, direct sunlight or dryer)5. Do not use fabric softener or bleach6. Do not dry-clean

ImpregnationWell impregnated gloves are dirt- and water-repellent. A wet upper causes a loss of heat. Therefore good impregnation protects also against cold. The upper is already impregnated when manufactured. As the impregnation looses the effect with use over time (when water does not roll off anymore), the gloves should be treated with a commercial impregnation spray.

The different GORE-TEX® laminatesGORE-TEX® Product Testing and the ‘guaranteed to keep you dry’ guarantee

Every new GORE-TEX® product prototype is put through its paces in rigorous tests in the Gore testing labs. Not only the GORE-TEX® fabric is tested, the entire system of outer material, insulation, membrane and lining has to prove its excellence under the toughest conditions. Only when a garment fulfi lls the high construction standards of GORE-TEX® product, is it cleared for production.

The products will get tested naturalistic in many testing facilities. Every new GORE-TEX® garment style must pass the Gore Rain Room, the Comfort, the Martindale as well the Cold test, before it goes into production.

By these means, the body is kept constantly dry, comfortable and warm with GORE-TEX® products.

These pores are around 20.000 times smaller than a water molecule, however 700 times bigger than a water vapour molecule. An oil repellent layer at the membrane ensures durable water resistance and prevents that body oils or insect repellent from penetrating the membrane.

Every product carrying the GORE-TEX® logo is guaranteed to fulfi ll the above criteria.

The GORE-TEX® membrane is the core of GORE-TEX® products. It is durable, waterproof, absolutely windproof and very breathable. The result:

When the going gets tough, GORE-TEX® Pro products are the best solution. Fabricated with the most rugged, most breathable, durable waterproof and windproof fabrics, GORE-TEX® Pro garments meet the demands of professional riders and serious enthusiasts alike.

The triple-layer construction comprises a special high performance climate membrane, bonded to a tough outer material and a stable inner lining. Its advantage is that the outer material does not soak water and thus will not waterlog.

This has essential, comfortable advantages:

• better breathability as there are no additional air cells

• no increase of weight because of absorption of water/rain

• fast drying

Innovation

What does a cloverleaf and protectors have in common?

The four-leaf clover is widely recognised as a traditional symbol of good fortune, but a link with motorcycling is not quite as obvious. However, the two are now united thanks to an innovation from Held, in partnership with one of the world’s most trusted developers of protection.

The four folding leaves of the clover inspired Held to work alongside SAS-TEC, to reach a new level of protection. Extensive R&D has produced an improved version of SAS-TEC’s already outstanding SC-1 material, perfect for a unique range of protectors with the following features:

That’s how a Held glove is made.

Video clipsOn our homepage you will fi nd video clips showing our famed glove production.www.heldusa.com

Punching

Before processing, the leather is soaked so that it can be stretched lengthways for cutting. That´s because the gloves can later only be stretched breadthways. The punching machine now punches out the individual parts. Later two back-to-front parts will be sewn together. An individual hide is rarely completely perfect. Faulty sections (damaged by thorns, barbed wire or ticks) are rejected.

Punching pattern

One pair of “Phantom” racing gloves consist of 156 component parts. Punching lasts around 18 minutes.

Real Held gloves go through fi re

Punched-out carbon panels are heated in the oven to 450°C. After 1 minute, the carbon becomes soft and can be reshaped. The carbon panel is then placed under a 40-ton press to give it its fi nal form. This is the carbon knuckle-protector which will eventually be built into the back of a glove.

Stitching and assembling

90 minutes of sewing time are needed to complete a pair of gloves.Specially trained staff stitch the component parts with the specifi c Held developed seams. This procedure is only possible with a very strong special sewing machines; many needles are destroyed sewing hard knuckle protectors to the glove!

Lets show you how an authentic Held glove is manufactured.

Test the Best

Finally all HELD gloves are carefully formed on hot metal irons. Once this operation is complete, each glove is checked for faults in material and workmanship.

Held’s attention to detail

1 Round-cut fi ngers provide a preshaped form for maxiumum user comfort.

2 Leather parts are overlapped where they meet and joined with backstitch to provide the fi nest seam. This gives the gloves a highly sensitive feel.

3 Each special seam takes 30 minutes of hand work.

4 The fi nger gusset is pulled forward, so there is no pressure on the fi nger from the seams.

A new Held is born!

Over 68 years of experience in manufacturing gloves.Over 67 years of looking for new materials and testing new technology, costantly developing products which combine improved comfort and safety in an increasingly demanding market.

We fi rst started to producing fashion and working gloves in 1946. Since 1975 we have been producing the fi nest motorcycling gloves available, we always have and will continue to develop improved safety and comfort of our gloves in conction with top professional riders and material technologists.

Held developed and produ-ced their fi rst motocross glove, in co- operation with Erwin Schmieder (11 times European Champion).

Tony Mang’s original race glove

The fi rst race gloves with carbon shells – made by Held.

Launched exclusively by Held: GORE 2in1 technology from

Held with the 2-chamber system enters the market.

The safest glove in its class!

Test results Held Phantom

The year of the big breakthrough. With the help of Toni Mang (5 times GP World Champion), Held developed a totally new and radically different glove. Its specifi cation still sets the standard for all up-to-date sports gloves.

Greater safety is not achievable at this time!

Enhanced safety – the “fi nger bridge”When riders fall, dislocation of the little fi nger is one of the more common injuries. In view of this, we have decided to incorporate a “fi nger bridge” which links the little and ring fi ngers.

This bridge is reinforced with KEVLAR® with a ceramic polymer matrix coating.

Furthermore, the ring and little fi ngers are protected with an additional layer of KEVLAR®, which means that the risk of injury to the fi nger is almost eliminated.

Sting ray leather Ball of thumb and knuckles protected by highly abrasion-resistant stingray leather, backed with shock-absorbing gel pads. This ensures that a falling rider will slide more easily and it protects fraying.

The Challenge

Motorcyclists demand a lot from their bodies, and especially from their hands. A biker’s hands have to steer, clutch, brake and simultaneously give the engine exactly the right amount of throttle. That’s why good motorcycle gloves must satisfy rigorous requirements. They must protect the biker from injuries and damage to the joints. They must remain lastingly breathable in the summer and watertight in the rain. And they must be very comfortable to wear. But until now, a glove that could satisfy all of these criteria always posed another problem: it signifi cantly reduced a biker’s feel for the motor-cycle. Now Gore has found a way to solve this problem. The solution is called “X-TRAFIT™ product technology”.

The Innovation

Many watertight motorcycle gloves are made of four layers: a sturdy outer material; an insulating layer; a watertight layer and a lining material. The robust new membrane used in the X-TRAFIT™ product technology makes it possible to eliminate two layers. Furthermore, all remaining layers are laminated to one another using a special three-dimensional process. Gore developed a new thermal adhesive with a netlike structure so that it doesn’t reduce the glove’s breathability. These gloves achieve unprecedented excellence in fi t, comfort and toughness. Motorcyclists feel as though they’re wearing single-layer gloves that could easily grasp even the smallest objects. This ensures excellent levels of tactility and ergonomic comfort. Put those two together and you get perfect control over your bike – in every situation.
