DATELINE: Fort Worth - Opening Day, Nov.6th - ON THE Ten day layover most of theacts came into Fort Worth where the TeggeMall Circus was also appearing for the firstpart of the layoff and visits were exchanged.

TNT & Olympic was appearing at the Sem-inary Mall about five miles away. On theshow were the Obandos, Miss Loni (subbingfor daughter Barbara who was assisting hermother), Grin 'N Bear It, doing a new act cal-led Spiel/eug (Gary Baker and partner), EariTegge, ringmaster, Louis Tegge, organist, TimTegge as "Twinkles" the clown, doubling ondrams, and Tim's wife, Gena, who does amagic opening bit with the cast in the ring. It's a very nicely put together unit and I en-joyed visiting with the Tegges. On my se-cond visit I brought along veteran show own-er Howard Suesz who jack-potted with thesenior Tegge who had once been on Suesz'stent show. Hagen Bros.

That same night the cast of the Tegge unitgave a shower for BARBARA VAN whosebaby is due in mid-December. Barbara wasliterally "showered with gifts" and therewas plenty of food and drink. Also visitingthat night were Pat and Gwen Oavison, theFlying Ibarras and David Strong.ITEMIZING: CAROL and CARLOS OBAN

DO'S 3 yr. old daughter PAMELA is nowcrossing the wire with a miniature balancingpole. Cute as a button she is.. .At the TandyCenter in Ft. Worth (quite an impressiveshopping center, by the way) went SHAP-PIS, TRUDY STRONG and her Dalmations,RON PERRY. IRVING HALL and othersfor a major pre-publicity stint.. .MACK MacDONALD pulled through his cornea trans-plant with flying colors and will soon be ableto go back to his major enjoyment - reading.Just prior to his operation he spent the nightreading "Past Murder Imperfect" and sentword to me that he loved it. And Mack is ahelluva critic, believe me. Thanks. Mack, forthe encouragement.. .TONY and IRENEFOSSETT to M&M in 1981. They will alsodo Detroit for TOMMY HANNEFORD...CEMON and SUSAN will return to CircusVargas in 1981 with their sensational chimpact; also returning for a second season areDONNA and BILL BANNISTER and, ofcourse, THE FLYING ESPANAS with twinflying acts.. .HERBIE and MARCELLA

caught CV in Bryan (Tex) and report theshow did SRO business. The next spot, Vic-toria, however, was not so hot, and this wasdue to the shoppirg center not letting themin at the last minute and the show had to setup elsewhere. CV will be in Texas for sev-eral weeks (at this writing) and will thennose back to California where it will reopenin January.. .The GERALDOS will playPuerto Rico for Circus Odyssey.. .Appar-ently BAUER-HALL will produce theshow at a major fair in Mexico City overthe holidays.. .BOBBY HUBER has a newgirl friend, JEANINE, and the two-somelook serious.. .HERBIE WEBER cancelledthe date in San Francisco for SID KELL-NER. The airlines wanted over $800 forthe round trip.

STILL FRIENDS: When JOANNE PINSONreplaced sister DONNA in the cradle act withBILL BANNISTER on Circus Vargas whilethe show was playing the Chicago area theRingjing Red Unit visited and all of Joanne'shusbands were on the lot at the same time, wow!

DAVIDE ZOPPE has delivered an ultima-tum to wife SUSAN - "Don't show Billy ourroute". Reason: Every date they book I seemto book also. Now we are in St. Paul togetherfor Hamid-Morton.WADE BURCK returned from the Califor-

Right after this number Iget to relax, so stick aroundand we can really visit.

FROM ROXY ENGCSSER

Engesser's Exotic Felines crossed the U. S.from Central Michigan to Kansas, duringwhich the rear end went out of the Winne-bago and you know how much luck youhave finding anything in dear old Kansas! Then it was into Tennessee and after cross-ing those beautiful mountains we stoppedfor gas and the trailer hitch broke. ThankGod it wasn't white we were in the moun-tains. It wasn't the rig hauling the livingtrailer, but the rig hauling the animals.A new heavier tongue was welded rightthere which made the trailer heavier andset it down on the tires, which promptlycaught on fire. But Don caught it in timeand all is well now.As the old saying goes • there's no businesslike show business!

You can tell that the season is over, here on51st St., South, in Tampa. A huge convoyof semis and large mounted rides rolled intowinterquarters of the Mighty Blue Grassshows on Nov. 3rd. Almost a week before,on Oct. 29th, some trucks from the Century21 Shows arrived at the Mario Zacchini lot.Now that the season is over, and the year of1980 is about to end, I would like to statethat the 80's started out good for "CircusJoe" and Bay area circus goers. This year three shows under canvas madetheir first appearance in this area. They are:Franzen Bros. Circus, in early March; Eddie

BEATTY COLE CIRCUS

BY RICK MC CONNELL

I have just returned from a trip to Pittsburghwhich I made especially to catch the new"building edition" of the Clyde Beany-ColeBros. Circus. I spent four days there andcaught every performance during that time.Believe me, I enjoyed every moment of itand do not regret making this 800 mile roundtrip for the occasion. It certainly was worthitI had only intended this as a visit, just to catchthe show, but somehow I became involved andwas able to be of some assistance in helping toadjust a couple of problems that just weren'tbeing corrected as they should be. Everyonewas so interested in getting things just right,so that the cooperation of all involved wasa big help. This unit is working under the corporationtitle of Kit Circus Corp., which has a smallgroup of investors as owners, and is separatefrom the Acme Circus Corp. which has theunder canvas operation. The building aerial rigging frames, 3 sets ofring curbs, 14 banks of 4 floor lights and 12sets of standards with 4 powerful ring lightseach, and other indoor rigging was purchasedfrom James Harrington, who used them inPuerto Rico and South America. This also in-cluded 12 aerial ladders, 6 for each frame. Theequipment is in perfect condition and beauti-fully decorated. This is a fine set-up.The show is moving on 11 or 12 tractor-trail-er units. I am not sure as all of the equipmentwas not parked where I could check it out. Here is what I did observe: 3 elephant semis,1 cookhouse semi, 1 concession semi, 1 sideshow semi (sleeping quarters for clowns, 24hour man, office personnel), 1 workingman'ssleeper semi. 1 band sleeper semi, 1 mechan-ic's semi (supply parts and sleeper), 1 semi forrigging, frames, ring curbs, electric equipment, etc., and one U-Haul single body truck. Then

Dave Hoover's own semi for his cats, arena,is there. The show is carrying its own 8 piece band (thesame as under canvas) which is augmented byup to 15 people where required. At all datesthe band is augmented by pre-recorded musicand singers for the production numbers. Thisis very skillfully syncronized by a sound en-gineer or technician so that it seems as thougha troupe off stage has joined in, and parts withshow personnel are so well mimed that the au-dience doesn't know the difference. The prop men and riggers are dressed in clean, red coveralls and are quiet, efficient and onthe ball, and do a real nice job.I wilt give you my impression of the prigramas observed at Pittsburgh, Pa., Oct. 29-Nov. 2,along with some comments as I list the acts.I would like to mention before listing the pro-gram that whatever my connection to this cir-cus has been in the past and present, it has nobearing on the comments that I make regard-ing the performance. To those who mightthink I am showing partiality, I say this is notso • I have been associated with many showsin the same way and capacities and on verygood terms. I have learned to base my com-ments on quality, good showmanship andpleasure-ability, and not on friendship or as-sociation, and do so now.

14 • Aerial Ballet -12 girls, 6 on each sideover Rings 1 and 3. Ring 1 Miss Darleen, Cen-ter Ring, Senor Gabriel, Ring 3 Miss MarieChristine. High trapeze performing while theother girls are on ladders. A very beautifuland well done production.+ Intermission +

Second Half - Band's Opening Number15 - Dave Hoover's wild animals - lions and

tigers (some slight changes, cats well trainedand still one of the best).

16 - Clown Tiger Chase - gets plenty oflaughs.

17 - Antonio-Julio Bros. (Ring 1), Los Ar-gentines (Ring3). Both ground perch acts,difficult, well done, very good.

18 - Al's Lemon-zeen - Fay Alexander, dri-ver and clown (This is the former Funny Fordused by Ernie Wiswell that old-timers knew).Fay does marvelous job, audience liked it.19 - The Herriotts - Equestrians in all three

rings. Mary Ruth (Ring 1), John Herriott (incenter), Miss W. Herriott (Ring 3). Horseman-ship, equestrian and dressage at its best.

20 - The Wee Gets in center ring - Head-to-head, hand to body, hand-to-hand stands ona raised platform, with stairs. Many difficultpositions, closing with couple hands-to-bodyand hands to platform. Descent on stairs tofloor (3 people, 2 girls, 1 man). A real showstopper, different, unusual, very good.

21 - Giant Wheel at end of arena - Danger-ous, thrilling, exciting and very well done.Pleased audience.22 - Martini- Trio, teeterboard (Ring 1), Ro-

berto Trio, (Center) pole/acrobat balance, Es-trada Trio (Ring 3) teeterboard (all unusualtype, well done, quite good).

23 - Elephant Safari (all 3 rings) This is stillthe good elephant act that has been a regularfeature on the show. Closing with the longmount. But the music bears no resemblanceto what one usually hears with such acts, al-though it does go with the decor and costum-ing well enough. This is the only part of theshow that I cannot praise. The act is still topsbut the music is too far out.

24 - Vashek Duo - motorcycle on an inclinedcable to top balcony. Male rider, female acro-bat on trapeze hung below cycle (very excitingexhibit of motorcycle stunting. Has flash andthrills, unusual entertainment, performed verywell).

25 - Finale - Salute to America Land of theFree - All performers are specially costumed, fireworks in Rings 1 and 3, dancers in centerring. Huge American flag dropped open atend of arena, as soon as musical salute ends.A short pause and announcement made, asband starts again and performers exit, thusconcluding program. (This was very stirringand well presented).

BEATTY.COLE (Continued)+ My Closing comments:

This is a real first class circus production, plenty of thrill and unusual acts. Beautifulproduction numbers and music speciallyarranged without taking away a lot of goodcircus numbers. All of it played by the bestcircus band on the road today, augmentedby skillfully injected pre-recorded taped mu-sic and singing for production numbers. Theband is lead by Russell Qarr and he has sevenvery fine musicians who are with it and do atop notch job.

There are no lags in the program. Every actis in place, ready to go when the other act isfinished. There are no pitches and no sales ofany kinds.John Herriott is program director and Jimmy

James is ringmaster and announcer.

The animals were tranquilized andtaken by truck to the zoo in Omaha, wherethey will remain until it is decided what theanimal's future is to be.Smith bought the tigers in January at Pen-rose, Colo, and then brought them to hisfarm, according to the U. Evidentally the Kentucky Fair was hit bya very bad storm this summer causing injur-ies to some people, all the lights to go outin the exhibition halls and the Stebbingstop to blow down (their old blue and whiteone). All the performers pitched in to sewand patch and the Stebbings only missed acouple of shows. Their new top was erectedat the next fair. It is blue with orange trim.

SPECIALISABEUE'S BABY and THE CRADLE

BY BOB STODDARD

The expression on this seven year old circusperformer tells something about how it feelsto be thirty feet in the air, without a net, when you are presenting your new act, in pub-lic, for the very first time.

It wasn't her first time in a circus ring thoughbecause Tajana Luvas grew up in the circus.

Circus blood runs deep in her veins. Her grandmother, Trudy Luvas, is still active

with her poodle revue and has trained the en-tire family in their aerial acts, including Strop-pi Hanneford (Tommy's wife) who, as PrincessTajana, is Tajana's aunt and namesake.

Her mother and father, Pete and Isabelte Lu-

vas, started their aerial act as "Pete and Petro-va"in 1961.

Her sister Tavanna took her mother's placein 1973 when she was fourteen years old andbecame a star in her own right, not too longago, just before Joe Lopez made her an offershe couldn't refuse. After their marriage, shebecame a housewife and had a taste of life •outside of the circus. "This," says Joe, "willonly last until her little 'trophy' is born. Shewill be back in the air in the spring."

Her sister Tepa was a show girl and web ar-tist from the time she was five years old, un-til she married Jimmy Hall, of Castle's Bears, and is currently with that great act. That brings us back to Isabelle's baby. Born

in 1973 in College Station, Pa., while the fa-mily was with Jimmy Cole's All Star TV Cir-cus, her early life was practically wasted sinceshe didn't become "Tajana, the Elephant girl"until she was four years old.

How does she feel about her new act? Sheinsisted that she be known as "Petrova" sothe act, "Pete and Petrova", still lives withthe third Petrova. She, "likes it a wholebunch because it's fun." She wants to growup to be a circus star; thinks it's "a greatlife." She's never lonely, has lots of friends. She likes "animals and she's around lots ofthem."

Sister Tavanna sums it up, "the little sniphas my job and she probably won't want togive it up!"Whatever else happens, the seven year old

"little snip" had a very successful crade de-but and was presented with roses sent by hergrandmother. The week old center ring at-traction gets tremendous audience responseand looks good.

ROYAL LICHTENSTEIN CIRCUSBY RICHARD C. JOHNSON

The Royal Lichtenstein Quarter-Ring Side-walk Circus played at three colleges in Jack-son, Miss., during the week of Oct. 20th.There are four in the troupe, with Nick We-ber in charge. The Royal Lichtenstein Cir-cus is his brain child. They have an array ofanimals; two dogs, a cat, a miniature honeand a monkey, and this year a beautiful blackbear was added. The Royal Lichtenstein Circus is one hour offast moving fun. It has audience participationin several of their routines. Their repertoirechanges from juggling to fire eating, to mag-ic, to animal acts, A trapeze was added thisyear and Nick Weber stated that he will havesomething new for us next year.College students across the country look for-ward to the Royal Lichtenstein Circus eachyear. On the dates I attended, they were ask-ed for a return performance next year.
