Work for a year after high school, attend Helena College for core

Bozeman. I want to eventually be a high school art teacher.
a celebRaTion of eXcellence 2013
I am very glad and honored to have met Mrs. Barbie-Rice. She is themost helpful art teacher I have ever had and doesn’t leave us lost, on our own with a painting when we are stuck. When you ask her aquestion about the subject of art, she knows what to say. She has taughtme all of the basic aspects about art, even those that apply to life. It has been amazing having her as my teacher in more ways than one. If I walked into her classroom feeling gloomy, she would be there withthe smile of a friend. She would do anything to help her students andthey all love her. The atmosphere in her class has always been one of respect. I have a dream of being a teacher and she is the one who inspired me to go ahead with it. She has taught me to never give up until you reach your goal.

In a nutshell, Mr. Loveridge is everything I could ask for in a bandteacher. From the moment I walked into band class as a freshman, he has made me love every minute I spend playing music. Mr. Loveridge’s musical talent and passion for teaching, along with his quirky sense of humor and vibrant enthusiasm, make for an unparalleled learning experience in and out of the band room. With his inspiration, I will enjoy music for many years to come. Thanks for everything you do, Mr. Loveridge!

I chose Lon Carter as my distinguished educator, because he has had amuch bigger effect on my life outside of athletics than one may think. Iremember as a freshman, Mr. Carter was always hounding me andpushing me to be better, even when I thought I couldn’t be. It is this atti-tude in life that I feel separates mediocrity from greatness. I feel it istrue in any aspect of life, whether it be athletic competition, school, orcompeting businesses; the one who puts in the most work will receivethe biggest reward. Mr. Carter has also always been someone I talk towhen I am in need of guidance and more often than not, he is the firstone I go to. Mr. Carter is a second father to me, and I try every day tolive my life by the lessons he has taught me. He has had an enormousimpact on my athletic career and my education. I will forever be grate-ful for my four years with him, and will most definitely seek his guid-ance in college and later in life. I thank him from the bottom of myheart, and I can never be thankful enough for his impact on my life.

Julie Mitchell subscribes to every goal she asks of her students. While she encouraged me and my classmates to go big, she herself continually pushed the edge of her own comfort zone with the events she organized. Mrs. Mitchell never stops at ‘good enough’, but continually seeks to redefine what she can give to her students. In addition to being an excellent teacher, she sees herself as a personalmentor to each student, pushing all to improve individually. I still seemyself as her student; I am still learning from her.

Her willingness to helpstudents and ensure their learning and understanding demonstratedher love for teaching. Not only did she teach us about the Incans,Mayans, and Aztecs, she also taught us to be creative and adventurous, opening our minds to the possibilities and wonders of the world. Mr. Pogreba’s class was the first English class I ever thoroughly enjoyed. It was no regular English class where we learned about grammar whilesimultaneously talking about the “moral of the story”. Mr. Pogrebamade his class one of the most informative I’ve ever taken, as well as the most fun and applicable. From spending a week as a prosecutingattorney in a mock trial to having debates about my hero, Chris McCandless, my experiences in his class altered the way I view the vast store of external knowledge around me that some call the world.

Mrs. Schadt was my freshman Honors English teacher and I chose her as my Distinguished Educator for the Helena Education Foundation’s Celebration of Excellence because of those exact terms. When I was a timid and oblivious freshman, Mrs. Schadt introduced me to a new level of expectation. Mr. Ryan Schulte is a stellar guy. With Kennedy-esque charisma andWoodrow Wilson’s abilities as an educator, Mr. Schulte excels at bothteaching history with a verve and dedication equaled by few of hispeers, and in relating entertaining anecdotes on subjects ranging from his service in Iraq to his noisy dog. As both a student and a teaching assistant, I have had the chance to learn from and work with this top-notch educator. He has taught my fellows and me a great deal and deserves this honor.

As a freshman and junior, I walked into “Papa Solomon’s” World Cul-ture and U.S. History room and read the first rule on the syllabus:“proper use of the word like.” Right then I knew, like right then that thisteacher and his classes were going to be challenging. His classroom wasalways a great journey whether we were traveling somewhere in ournotes, working on projects or just playing “Current Events.” I learnedfrom him and his crazy first rule that our words are often what make afirst impression. I also learned that being accountable is important. Mr.Solomon is not only a great teacher, but he is also a great coach and rolemodel. He has taught me that regardless of how much we have going onin our lives, it is important to prioritize the important things and stay fo-cused. After two years, I know I want to be just like him. Thank you forbeing my inspiration and for helping me get where I am today!

I have been extremely blessed to have Mr. Peterson as my math teacherthese past two years. He has an amazing ability to explain complex concepts in a way that really connects with me, even when our calculusequations have more letters than numbers. He always knows when I need help and how best to help me. But equally important, Mr. Peterson is the kind of teacher who makes learning fun. Every day that I walked into Mrs. Dunkle’s classroom was an adventure.Engaging fifth graders is by no means an easy task. Math has always been one of my favorite subjects; however, Mr. Burkett’smath class fostered an even greater fondness for it. I found myselfwanting to learn more each day. He showed genuine care toward everyone. I had Mr. Burkett my junior year of high school, a year I wasalso battling some difficult and ongoing health issues. When it began to impact my school life, Mr. Burkett did not hesitate to help. He knew I would want to maintain my 4.0 GPA and would email me daily withwork and notes to keep me up to date with the class, proving to me thatteachers truly care about their students. Not only did Mr. Burkett helpme through an extremely difficult time, but he has also continued to bevery motivating and an inspiration for me. He has influenced me tochoose a career in which I can make a change and use my life experi-ences to guide me into doing my best. At first I was worried about getting my clothes dirty. Now, however, I walk into Mr. Lane’s classroom expecting to walk out of it looking a bit messier and a lot happier. I’ve always had a talent for art, yet it was through Mr. Lane that I discovered what art is truly about—not perfection, but creativity, passion, and a little experimentation. For the rest of my life, I will harbor a love for art (and messiness) that flourished with each day I spent in his class. As a teacher, she instilled in me a sense of confidence, excitement, and adventure that ultimately inspired me to study abroad in high school. Her unrelenting passion, dedication, and quirky sense of humor are characteristics I will always admire.

Mr. John Peskey arrived at Helena High as I arrived as a freshman. His incredible knowledge of music and style of teaching has broughtme leaps closer to mastery of the violin, which lies miles away. He has not only taught me musical appreciation of all genres, but Mr. P balances the humor of a jester contrasted with his monk-like passion and dedication to music.

Mrs. Autumn Johnstone was my 4th and 5th grade teacher in theMontessori Program at Smith Elementary School. Mrs. J. and theMontessori Program shaped my methods of learning and helped me to become both more independent, as well as a team player. I have always admired the way Mrs. J. runs her class with authority, but alsomakes sure all of her students know that their thoughts and ideas matter. I have nothing but respect for Mrs. Johnstone and hope that one day I will be able to inspire someone the same way she has inspired me.

My second grade teacher, Mrs. Chamberlain, has impacted my life in an indescribable way. From the first day of school, she welcomedus with big smiles and “Frog and Toad” stories that put all of us atease. Her classroom had an environment that inspired me to achievesuccess through learning. Mrs. Chamberlain taught me more than justcursive and where to use commas; she taught me how to smile at everysituation I may be faced with. She showed me the potential I had in mylife and I don’t know where I would be without her.

Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve wanted to be a writer; but Mr. Brophywas the first teacher who made me feel like my dream could be a reality. In both Journalism and Newspaper classes, Mr. Brophy encouraged meto try new styles of writing, pushed me outside of my comfort zone, andtaught me important lessons in journalistic integrity. Out of all of theteachers in my thirteen years of public education, I feel Mr. Brophy hasprepared me the most for my chosen career path.

Strong, brilliant and thoughtful are words that describe JonnaSchwartz; however, I couldn’t possibly summarize her entire personality in three words. Ms. Schwartz is truly indescribable. She possesses an uncommon passion for grammar, a keen knowledgeof literature, and all the driving qualities of a first-wave feminist. She truly captivated my interests and encouraged me to pursue my passion for English. She gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in every way imaginable. You’ll never know how big an impact you’vemade on my life. Thank you.

After hearing Mr. Partridge jokingly shouting at his class and seeinghim tossing Frisbees at people, I wasn’t sure what to expect from him. It turns out, I discovered my favorite, most influential teacher.Mr. Partridge connected history to the present, making me care more about how today’s world can be improved. Thanks to him, I’ve decided to major in political science and learn how to make those improvements. Though I don’t know where I’ll go from there, I know Mr. Partridge is the one to thank. So thank you Mr. Partridge, for everything.

The first thing, the greatest thing, and the only thing that comes tomind when I think of Mr. Pedersen is the amount of knowledge and ma-turity that I gained from being in his class. Most of one’s high schoollearning comes from X and O type lessons. Things like “the square rootof 64 is 8” and “y=mx + b is a linear equation”, but after so many yearsof this, many students begin to ask themselves, “Will I really need toknow this later in my life?” That question, which I hear asked by somany students, cannot be asked in Mr. Pedersen’s Science Seminarclass. No matter where you intend to go, or what you intend to be,everything taught in Mr. Pedersen’s class can be applied to your life in some way. He has the ability to make even some of the most stubborn teenagers consider things far beyond themselves, and therefore dedicate themselves to leading a truly meaningful life. As an 18 year old, I can say that I deeply think about and consider things thatmost people don’t until much later in life, thanks to Mr. Pedersen.

Terri Atwood is a devoted mentor who really took the time to notice the hard work I put into everything I do, making me push myself thosefew extra steps to be where I am today as a distinguished achiever. She gave me a lead role in two of the plays we put on over the course of two years and is the reason I was awarded the academic and citizenship award at my 8th grade graduation. She made me look forward to stepping into class every single day.
