I like to think that August Heckscher would be proud to know that95 years after he founded The Heckscher Museum it still embraces

his principal philanthropic passion.

The current Philanthropic Giving Pledge fostered by multi-billionairesWarren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates encourages the wealthiestindividuals to dedicate the majority of their fortunes to philanthropy. The notion of giving away most of one’s wealth to charitable causes is,of course, nothing new, as many instances can be found amongphilanthropists of earlier generations. August Heckscher is one suchexample. He too believed in giving back to a society that affordedhim pathways to success. His charitable priority was child welfare. He is quoted as saying “God in his great kindness has given mewealth. . . . It is my plan to spend much of this for the uplift ofchildren especially.” This preference later made its way into the textof the founding document of the non-profit corporation that todaymanages the Museum. In 1957, the New York State Board ofRegents granted an Absolute Charter to The Heckscher Museumwhich states clearly that it operates “. . . for charitable andeducational purposes and for the use and benefit of the inhabitantsof the Town of Huntington and especially of the school children . . . .”Museum leadership strives to fulfill this mandate by investingsignificantly in K-12 educational programming. In this regard,we are especially proud to report that during 2014 the MuseumDiscovery Programs, the flagship of The Heckscher Museum’seducational initiatives, served nearly 7,000 schoolchildren, anincrease of 28% from the year before!

As the Museum observes its 95th year as an important cultural assetthat enriches the quality of life of the community it serves, “childrenespecially,” I invite you to join the celebration—admission free—for aweekend of fun activities Friday, July 10 through Sunday, July 12.

Learn about original works of art with Museum Educators in thegalleries. Explore different styles and art materials. Create art in smallclass settings with individualized attention.

Join the fun after each workshop with a free family tour and activitiesin the Museum at 12:00 noon.

*In the event of inclement weather, draw or paint indoors.

Graphic AppealModern Prints from the CollectionAugust 15 – November 29

The 20th century witnessed an explosion in printmaking as newprocesses were developed, print studios became established, and artistsresponded to the visual appeal of graphic design. This PermanentCollection exhibition features a selection of landscape, figurative, andabstract work produced using a wide range of traditional and modernprocesses. Before Selfies: Portraiture through the AgesThrough August 9

Before the advent of the camera and the more recent phenomenonof social media and the selfie, preserving an image of one’s likenessrequired the skills of a trained portraitist, whose work often revealedmore than details of physiognomy. Before Selfies features overfour-dozen drawings, paintings, and sculptures from the Museum’sPermanent Collection that present various approaches to conveyinga subject’s likeness. Self-portraits and images of fellow artists, family, and friends reveal the artist’s most intimate world, while images ofpublic figures, unidentified sitters, and character types describe ourcollective experience. Changing concepts of beauty, diverseapproaches to depicting male and female subjects that reflectunderlying gender roles, and commentary on modern life are ancillarythemes. Works by Thomas Anshutz, William Merritt Chase, EdwardCurtis, Thomas Eakins, Red Grooms, Henri Matisse, William SidneyMount, Fairfield Porter, and many others are represented.

Poised PosesPortraits from the August Heckscher CollectionThrough August 2

The August Heckscher Collection, which comprises the core of theMuseum’s holdings, was particularly strong in historical Europeanportraiture, as was typical of early 20th-century collecting in America. This installation features works from our founding collection, installedto evoke the ambience of an upper class turn-of-the-20th-centuryhome. Highlights include portraits by Sir William Beechey, Sir HenryRaeburn, and George Romney, as well as works by Nicholasde Largillierre, Franz Wolfgang Rohrich, and Antoine Vollon.
