Speed measurement and positioning of rollers anddrives in the steel industry

Position and motion sensors play an important role in steel plants. Even thoughthey are exposed to harsh environmental conditions, the encoders must ensure anuninterrupted and safe process. Kübler encoders have given good service for many years in steel plants all over the world. Reliability is the main feature, especially for plants with very high operating costs.

In order to achieve safe incremental information with the encoder,the controller must monitor the validity of the analogue, 90° phase-shifted sine/cosine signals with the help of the function: sin² + cos² = 1.In order to obtain safe information with the encoder regardingthe absolute position, the controller counts the incrementalpulses and compares the result with the absolute positionsalso provided by the encoder.A 100% reliable mechanical connection is required for a safefunction in the applications. Suitably sturdy fixing elements canhelp eliminate the risk of faults.

Even well-earthed machine housings and rotors of generators and large motors carry a shaft current on the rotor. The equipotential bonding from the rotor to the stator via the enco-der bearings leads to spark erosion and damages the ball-bearings. Thiscanberemediedbyisolatingtheencoderbearings.Isolatinginserts can be used with all Sendix compact encoders. The Sendix H120 has a fully-isolated bearing construction and is tested to a breakdown voltage of 2.5 kV.The integrated bearing isolation enables a metal to metal connection for slip free mounting.

100 percent resistant to magnetic fields – extremely compact design. The sturdy, thick-walled die-cast housing of the Sendix encoders is press-fit stemmed several times on the encoder flange.The high protection level and the wide temperature range from -40°C to +90°C allow a safe outdoor operation. The die-cast housing is fitted with an extremely resistant base, on which the connector flange is screwed with four screws.
