Do you need any kind of heating or cooling system at your school?

Portugal

Using heating and cooling systems. Just cooling systems in small rooms.

Using cooling system

Using heating system from october- may. No cooling system.

Using heating system during winter

Use heating system, no cooling system.

What type of heating system is used?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

district heating system - we burn for example trash.

There are air conditioning and ceiling fans.

A central heating system with Natural Gas. Before we used Diesel but it was a bit cheaper and more environmental friendly with Natural Gas.

There are six air conditioners in other places at school.

Heating with gas

Are there any renewable energy systems at your school?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

No information

No there are no renewable energy systems at our school.

We have some solar panels in the roof, they produce electricity that is sold to the electric company.

No, but they use gas instead of oil which is better for the environment

No

How energy efficient are those systems ?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

They are very effective because it keeps the temperature good.

We don't know.

Not very good. Our school is a three stalls building. With this system the first floor is heated faster that the second and the third floor. The temperature is also higher in the first floor than in the third one.

The air conditioners are more energy efficient because they have the inverter system.

Don’t know

Is energy consumption related to those systems very high?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

We don’t know

We don't know

If we compare energy consumption in November 2011 (18 961 kWh) with May 2011 (10 646 kWh) we easily conclude that this big difference is related to winter time and to the need of keeping the different places at school warm enough.

We don't know

We don't know, but the consuming of gas is 156000m3gas/year

Do people usually close the windows and doors to avoid losing energy?

réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

Yes, we are quite good at closing doors and windows. It´s too cold to have them open.

Yes, people usually close the windows and the doors to avoid losing energy.

If it’s too hot in a classroom, what we do is open the windows, in this way we are wasting energy and money.

More and more people close the windows and the doors when the heating systems are on and turn the heaters off when they are not really needed. In fact, they should be turned off after lunch time.

We usually don’t have them open.

What’s the average temperature in the classroom when the heating system is

being used?Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

The temperature is about 20-21+ degrees in our classrooms. Our energy systems are quite environmentally friendly.

It's 24 degrees or 25 degrees with the air conditioning and with the fan at most.

The temperature in some classrooms can be higher than in other ones, so we don’t know.

the temperature in a classroom in February can range from 9ºC to 25º C.

About 21-23°C

Does the school building have a good insulation system? Are there double paned

windows?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

We have triple planed windows. So that is very good for the energy.

No, the school building doesn't have a good insulation system and the aren't double paned windows.

No information

Thermal insulation in our buildings is very weak because these are old buildings

No insulation at all, so because of this the 61%of the energy gets through the walls, and the windows don’t isolate very well

How many months a year do you use heating?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

During the autumn, winter and a bit of the spring.

We never use heating, it's too hot here.

We use heating eight months a year. When the weather is cold we switch it on and when it is hot we switch it off.

We use heating for 3 months(December, January and February).

Maybe 3-4 months

Page 11: Heating and cooling

How many months a year do you need cooling/air conditioning?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

We use air conditioner when it’s hot, and in small rooms without windows.

We need air conditionning 5 months a year

In our school we haven't got any cooling system.

In summer they use it a lot

We don't use any cooling systems.

Page 12: Heating and cooling

What are the main source(s) of heating at school? In people’s homes?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

District heating (when you burn garbage)

At home and at school we don't have heating.

In our school we use Natural Gas, in our town, most of the people use also Natural Gas

We use gas for heating in school.

Don’t know

Is it common to have the doors and windows open during lessons?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

We open the windows just if it’s too hot or the air is bad

Because of the hot temperatures we always have the doors and windows open.

Sometimes, because in some of the classes it is very hot while in other ones it is cold. We can't switch it off only in some classes because it is central controlled. So if in some of the classes we are hot, we open the window.

Yes, but only in summer when it’s hot

No, because if we open them, we won't hear what the teacher says.

Are there radiators and/or air conditioning in every classroom?

Réunion

Sweden

Hungary

The basque country

Portugal

We have air conditioning only in informatics rooms . In the others rooms we have fans.

Yes, in all the classrooms there are radiators, because the high school is very big and it is also difficult to heat it all. We haven ' t got any air conditioning ,because in our country the temperature isn' t very hot.

They have six air conditioners in other places at school. They have radiators in almost every classroom.

Yes, there are radiators in every room in the school.

Yes, in every classroom.

Are the heating/cooling systems on all day, every day?
