3 MINUTES STARTER ACTIVITY Students to have general discussion on
the concept of "temperature."
Volunteers to feed back answers after 3 minutes
• What is temperature?
• How do things get hotter or colder
Task is a survey of student's perceptions/understanding of concept of temperature and heatwww.whysciencetutors.com
![Page 3: HEATING AND COOLING (TEMPERATURE AND THERMAL ENERGY) LESSON ONE](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082916/54961d3db479592a118b481c/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Copy out and process the key concepts in the information by
rearranging or connecting them.
• As substances get colder• As substances get hotter• The molecules vibrate less• The molecules vibrate more• Temperature increases• Temperature decreases
This task encourages students to think creatively through reasoning and processing information.

Definition of Concepts
We are just beginning to realise the differences between heat and
temperature
• From your answers see if you can decide what the unit of
• 1. Heat and 2. Temperature are
• It is important we find a way of distinguishing between temperature and heat
• Checking progress through their knowledge and understanding

GETTING HOT OR COLD
• Can you think of examples of heat transfer in everyday experiences?
• What happens to the temperature of a glass of fizzy drink when you put an ice cube into it?
• What happens to the temperature of the ice cube in the glass of fizzy drink?
This task considers the idea that energy transfer results from a difference in temperature. This is an important concept for the students.

TEMPERATURE AND HEAT
• Temperature is not the same thing as heat –True or False
• Explain the difference between heat and temperature.
The unit also helps pupils distinguish heat (energy) from temperature.

AMOUNT OF HEAT ENERGY IN A SUBSTANCE
• Your task is to draw the following 1)a beaker full of water 2) a
bucket of full of water Can you guess why it will take less
than 6 minutes to heat the water in the beaker to 40 degree Celsius and nearly an hour to heat the water in the bucket to 40 degree Celsius.
