Issue 6817 May 2019
The College welcomed Labour life peer
Baroness Andrews on Friday 10th May who
came to speak to our students about the
role of the House of Lords and was keen to
engage our students with discussions of
contemporary issues such as Brexit and the
impact of social media
Baroness Andrews engaged with students
throughout her visit and was interviewed
by students from the Heathfield Vine and
Heathfield TV which will be featured in
the upcoming editions of the Vine and
Heathfield TV.
This was followed by a talk to Year 10
and Year 12 students where she discussed
the increasing importance of the House
of Lords in recent years and her long
career in public service. The Baroness
having served as a special advisor to Neil
Kinnock in the 1980s and Labour's
spokesman on Education in the House of
Lords from 2002-2005.
She then engaged with questions and
answers with the students.
Henry Heard commented that: ‘
‘I thought the Baroness was really kind and
thoughtful towards people of all views.
She expressed her own views and
understood anyone who disagreed with
her.’
Euan Goodwin said after the event:
‘She was very interesting, her answers to
the questions were really interesting and
it was good to hear a different viewpoint
on Brexit.’
PEER IN SCHOOL VISIT
Heathfield HeadlinesMessage from the Headteacher, Caroline Barlow
Heathfield Headlines
The first example was seeing Year 11 in the hall on Tuesday, preparing to go into their first
GCSE exam. Receiving their last minute reminders, the buzz and anticipation in the room
was tangible. They knew they were ready, they felt confident and there was a real sense of
“lets get on with this; we know we can do well.” I was incredibly proud of them and their
Science staff for arriving at the right time, in the right way. I have every faith in them for
this exam season.
The second occasion this week was talking with some students about an entry we have been
asked to submit for a book that will be released later this year. This is the second year
running we have been asked to be a case study for an educational publication, showcasing
some of the best practise in the country. In this instance the authors wanted student
perspectives on the College, what did they enjoy, what had they experienced. It was
wonderful to hear the answer to the question ‘who is your favourite teacher was: “ All of
them, I can’t choose! All the teachers at Heathfield Community College are amazing.
That’s what all my friends say whenever we talk about it and why we come here.”
Finally, this week the sun came out and our beautiful grounds came into their own. I could
not help but reflect on my good fortune to be able to spend my lunchtime outside, talking
to cheerful and interesting young people, in-between their cartwheeling and football
kicking, relaxed, happy and active. They are witty, caring and enthusiastic for their learning
and life.
Sadly, I cannot transport you to our world everyday but do take a glance at the pages here
and feel reassured that our young people are an impressive group of whom we have every
right to be collectively proud. Thank you as always to the parents and carers who work with
us in this collaborative effort that is our College.
You only have to spend a short
amount of time with our students
and they will energise and renew
your spirit. They are incredible
young people. Like most grown-
ups, we can be prone to moments
of grumpiness when things don’t
go our way or feel fair. In College
we try to ensure that no matter
how difficult our day might be,
our interactions with students are
positive and more often than not
this can be a tonic in itself.
I felt the full force of that tonic
this week in a number of ways:

Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy & Deputy Head Girl
Once again, we have had another busy fortnight at the College. Over the bank holiday
weekend, we saw Year 13 A-level physics students visiting CERN, Switzerland: a great
opportunity for them to further their in-depth knowledge in preparation for exams.
In College, students have had the opportunity to take part in the second ' Super
curriculum' fortnight: a fantastic chance for students to broaden their knowledge on
those subjects that they are most passionate about, preparing them for the future by
opening many doors in off-syllabus topics.
Year 9 had their collapsed curriculum day, developing their employability skills with
over 35 external visitors showing Heathfield's link to the wider world of work.
Workshops were run to discuss and develop soft skills as students consider their
contribution to society.
Year 7 experienced their first ever parents' evening at Heathfield, receiving wonderful
feedback which will help them shape their fulfilling journey at the College.
On Monday the long-awaited GCSE exam seasons started. We are ever so proud of how
well everyone has been preparing and dealt with this first week. We wish you all the
best for the rest of them: just keep going how you are!
Today marks Year 13s last day at Heathfield. We also wish them all the best for their
exams and the incredibly bright futures awaiting all of them; they will be missed.
Last Friday, we were fortune enough to be visited by Baroness Andrews which was
greatly beneficial to Economics students.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME: TENT PITCHING
More information about the award can be obtained
from Ms Harker: [email protected]
In total we pitched in excess of 25 tents in the 2 hours; identifying damage or missing
parts; cleaning the insides; and packing them back away. Whilst the ground conditions
were perfect it must have been the windiest afternoon in April making putting away
extremely interesting! As always, our amazing participants leapt to the challenges and
displayed some great teamwork.
The after school Duke of Edinburgh session was extended last week for us to rummage
through the tent store in preparation for the expedition season. Our aim was twofold:
firstly for all the participants to get to a proficient level of tent pitching and to
allocate the tents for each team; secondly, our focus was to see the condition of our
donated tents.

We would like to pass on our congratulations to our
first successful Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award cohort.
Lydia Smith, Liv Crane, and Isla Howlett were awarded
their lapel badges and certificates yesterday supported
by Maesie Lane and Anna Hersey-Swan who received
their certificates earlier in the year.
The award involves four sections: volunteering for 6
months; learning or honing a skill and completing a
physical activity (one for 3 months and the other for 6
months); completing two expedition weekends of 3
days and 2 nights.
A superb achievement and one to be proud of.
Certainly one to put on future applications to college,
universities or employment to stand out from the
crowd.

VOLUNTARY DONATION
Events & Notices
By way of update and thanks we wanted to let you know how the voluntary donations have
been used this year to benefit students in a range of ways:
• To support motivational speakers to lift the spirits of Year 11 and Year 10 at different
points of the year.
• To provide funds for the Executive School Council who have chosen to invest this in
additional sports equipment, to support the Eco Reps with new recycling bins and bird
boxes and also to assist with the purchase of a new Salad Bar for the canteen.
• To provide for the equipment needed for our student leadership strands such as the
Radio Station and HTV.
• Additional board games as requested by students to run lunchtime activities inside.
We are delighted that we have secured the impressive speaker, author and advocate on
mental health, Natasha Devon MBE, as our Honours Speaker this year, in addition she will
be doing workshops with students during the day so that the maximum number of students
can benefit from her powerful messages on mental health and wellbeing.
In addition, at the end of the year some funds will contribute to the redesign and
modernisation of the Library and redecoration of parts of the school outside our normal
cycle of upkeep.

Ambitious & Curious
For some of the Year 13, the visit to
Geneva, Switzerland, to see the world-
renowned research centre of CERN was a
was not only a great opportunity to see
cutting edge scientific work but their first
time flying. As such, the group were
extremely excited and the trip and
experience more than lived up to
expectations. The city of Geneva was
admired by all and provided an excellent
backdrop for the trip. Despite the weather,
which was less than perfect, pupils made
the most of their time to explore and find
their own experiences of what Geneva had
to offer.
The focus of the trip was the visit to CERN
(Conseil Européen pour la Recherche
Nucléaire) itself. An early start on Saturday
morning and a short tram ride took us out
of the city and to the foot of the Alps were
CERN is situated. In the morning, we had a
3-hour tour of the facilities and lecture
about the works and developments that
have been made in CERN.
YEAR 13 VISIT TO CERN, SWITZERLAND
This was truly enlightening as pupils gained a
sense of the vastness of the facility, the
collaboration between the participating
countries, and the depth of scientific work
that goes on there. Highlights of the tour
included a trip into France to see the
Cryogenic test facility (the coldest place on
Earth and one of the coldest in the
universe). Following our tour, the 2 exhibits
provided extra insight into the workings of
such a vast and important scientific
institute.
The whole trip was rounded off nicely with a
visit to the Swiss Natural History museum,
showcasing the evolution of humans with a
display of ‘Lucy’, which shows hominids
developed bipedal gait about 3.5 million
years ago… as well as the extraordinary 2
headed tortoise!
In all, students left the trip with a deepened
and more enthused interest for not only
physics but science in general.

With the initial tournament cancelled before Easter due to poor weather, the Year 7 teams
recently played their end of season netball tournament. This event also doubled up as the
Specsavers Schools Games qualifying event to represent the North Wealden Warriors in the
Sussex Schools Games in June. Two Heathfield teams took part. The B team came 5th and
were the highest placed B team, as they also competed against the A teams. The A team
finished as convincing winners, winning all their games and scoring 31 goals in total and
only conceding 2. Well done to all those students who took part and represented the
college so well a great set of results, good luck to the Year 7s who now qualify for the
Sussex Schools Games. Particular thanks goes to Year 10 young leader Mattea Rendell who
umpired for the Heathfield B team throughout the tournament. Ms Cobbold said, “All the
games were played to a good standard with the Heathfield players showing commitment
and determination throughout with strength in depth.”

SPECSAVERS SCHOOLS GAMES LEVEL 2 PRIMARY TENNIS EVENT
An overcast and shower-threatening day welcomed the first School Games event of the
year for Years 3 & 4 from Heathfield area primary schools. The Road to Eastbourne
Tennis event culminates in the county finals being held in Eastbourne on the qualifying
Saturday of the Nature Valley International Men’s and Women’s tennis events, where
those successful qualifying school players and supporters once they have competed also
gain free access to Devonshire Park to watch the international matches.
The 5 schools competing in the Heathfield family round took part in tennis multi skill
relay races, skill events and doubles matches. All schools gained points for their 1st- 5th
finishing positions in each activity held. Dallington were the winners and they go through
to represent Heathfield in the North Wealden Partnership event being held in May at
Weald Tennis Nick Matthews for supporting the afternoon. Additional thanks also go to
the fabulous year 9 leaders who helped to officiate and score at this event, for some
young leaders this was their very first time leading. Their support is much appreciated
by Ms Cobbold and all the schools. Without them, the event would not be able to take
place.
The teachers and Year 3 & 4 students said during the event, ‘I can’t believe they are
only Year 9 and it’s there first time leading. They are so confident and mature.’ ‘The

As A Level exam season looms, we have to say goodbye to our brilliant student Editor,
Louisa Dollimore, who has led The Heathfield Vine so impressively for the past two
years.
Louisa has presided over significant growth and development in The Vine, producing
high quality termly issues with varied contributions from students across the school.
She has also taken our student newspaper to its highest level of success yet with its
shortlisting last year in four separate categories of the National Shine Student Media
Awards, where it stood proudly against publications from some of the leading
independent schools in the country.
FAREWELL TO THE EDITOR OF THE HEATHFIELD VINE
“Louisa has been an absolutely fabulous
editor,' said Ms Savage, who supervises the
online publication. 'Her talent for writing
clear, engaging stories is evident and her
ability to encourage and develop younger
writers has been wonderful to behold. We
shall miss her enormously. Following a round
of interviews last week, a new team has been
appointed to take us into next year.”
The role of editor will be taken up by
Georgina Sharma in Year 12, with two
deputy posts to be held by Amelia
Lorrimore in Year 11 and Lottie Macro in
Year 10.
As ever, contributions are always welcome
from any student in any year group. The
editorial team meet on Monday lunchtimes
in Room 13.

HOW THE PUBLIC VIEW HEATHFIELD STUDENTS
Honesty and Integrity
If your son or daughter needs to take any medication during the College day you should
inform Mrs Millis in the Student Support Office at [email protected] or
telephone 01435 866066 Ext 1203. Students should not keep the medicine with them
during the school day.
You will also need to complete the parental consent form that can be found on the
College website at
http://www.heathfieldcc.co.uk/parents/letters&information/administrationofmedicine.
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Millis.
ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICINES
In recent Headlines we have shared feedback from members of the public who have contacted us to let us know what they experienced when meeting our students out and about. Sometime students don’t think we know, or get to hear, about their life outside College …. but we do!
Some of the most powerful feedback sometimes is to gain a flavour of the things members of the community say without ever intending for us to know or hear! Here is a flavour of things we have been told as overheard….
Our staff equally have a stellar reputation. We were recently informed by a potential partner, “Oh I don’t need to wait to find out. I have heard all about your College; the reputation is sterling and we really want to work with you.”
We thoroughly enjoyed delivering to Heathfield
students yesterday; they were great to work with and they came up with some really great
ideas.
I attended a board meeting the other day and the stand at the
Eastbourne Careers Fair was mentioned. The team commented
on the large number of schools present and how unruly most were with the exception of the students
from Heathfield Community College. They stood out with their good manners, presentation and
general behaviour.

Compassionate & Considerate
During Term 5 we have been working as hard as ever to continue
to make our College as green as can be! Our main focus has been
on the beautifully recycled bird boxes, Seed to Feed and
purchasing two new large recycle bins.
ECO REPS UPDATE
Our herb garden is taking form in our planters in the Quad area. We all enjoyed the
planting and we are now dedicated to nurturing them and providing our Food
Technology Department with our efforts to enhance their practical sessions.
Eco-Reps are also very lucky to be supported by our fantastic Facilities and Design
Technology departments. Mr Page made us four new bird boxes out of recycled
College materials, our logos were sign written and added to them by Mr Stidder and
they were put up around the site by Mr Palmer and his team. We hope to soon be
seeing more of our beaked friends and their young around the college as a result!
We remain committed to enhancing our recycling effort and our new bins will have
simple step instructions on them to follow - watch this space!

ON-LINE SAFETY
DID YOU KNOW?
We all have that friend who thinks it’s funny to sneak into your Social Media account and
post embarrassing comments on your behalf. It’s a laugh isn’t it?
Not really…….because what this means is that you’ve left yourself logged into the account
when away from the device that you normally use.
On modern smart phones that’s the whole point: you get updated instantly all of the time
and you don’t have to “faff” around logging in when sending updates or pictures yourself.
But how many apps on your devices do you leave logged in all the time? On how many
websites have you ticked the “Remember me” button or said yes to that pop-up that asks
you “would you like Internet Explorer / Chrome / Safari” etc to remember your
password? How much of your private information do you allow a computer to auto-fill for
you?
All of these are great and helpful things – as long as you never let that device out of your
sight or ever let anyone else use it.
At best you just have a few more online conversations about what “so and so” wrote
behind your back. At worst you could be allowing someone else to set you up as a cyber-
bully or you could be giving your identity (and therefore your money) to a fraudster
without even realising it.
Be careful about keeping anything logged in when you are not using it or about allowing
auto-fill on fields when shopping online.
YEAR 11 ENGLISH AND MATHS AWAY DAY
30 Year 11 students were given a wonderful opportunity to spend a day off-site. The
focus for the day was to intensively work on their English and Maths skills just ahead of
the start of the exam season.
Students travelled by mini-bus to a conference room at Wellshurst Golf Club and spent
the day sharpening their algebraic skills, their knowledge of the poetry anthology
amongst other numeracy and literary topics.
All students worked extremely hard and were a credit to the school. Mia Austin Taylor
said, “I’ve got so much work done today.” Holly Brown commented that the day “was
useful.” A key message of the day was that with hard work everything is achievable. It
was one students embraced.
The staff at the venue were also very complimentary about our students saying, “They
are so polite and well-behaved. They’re lovely.”
The English and maths departments wish students the very best of luck in their
upcoming English and maths exams but in also all of their other exams.
