PRODUCT DESIGN (INCL. TOY DESIGN, CAMPING AND OUTDOOR

FURNITURE)

Within my desire to develop and create grows an eagerness to learn and a fascination in my ability to flourish. I have all but one motive for creation which is to seek out a way to design objects while eliminating the repercussions products have on the environment. I am inspired by methods of reuse and recycle and by simply creating something with nothing. It is our generation of designers and innovators that will transform the direction of mass production into a sustainable practice.

I D e s ig n P r oduc t s f o r You r Company !

I design products that will boost your company's brand image and recognition. New product lines create an opportunity for increased customer loyalty, increased awareness of brand manifesto and dynamic, innovative efforts to stay ahead of competition.

The next section will illustrate my design process of Product Development and get you familiarized with what common steps are involved in finishing a design project.

RESEARCH

This first phase of design focuses on investigating the product market and verifying target market. Various forms of research are completed at this stage such as existing related product search, wants and needs of users, product background, retail environments, existing technology, and finally use cycles.

The following development example is taken from a Camping Accessory design project completed for Coghlan's Outdoor Accessories.

IDEA GENERATION

This is the fun part, I use my expertise in idea generation to develop many different, innovative ideas to present to my client. I sketch out different aspects of my ideas and present them all in a clear, concise visual presentation. Once the ideas have been reviewed, they are categorized into pro's and con's.

CONCEPT REFINEMENT

Based on the selected few concepts that moved to the next round after Idea Generation, a new set of concepts are developed. I focus on emphasizing the benefits of particular features through sketching and low fidelity model making. This phase quickly narrows down redundant features to feasible concepts.

FOCUS GROUPS & TESTING

This phase is the most beneficial and helpful throughout the development process. I work on establishing a user testing group that can be used for future testing sessions. Social Media, blogs and online sources are used as well as in person recruiting methods. Questionnaires are typically developed and filled out to produce qualitative and quantitative data.

CONCEPT EVALUATION

Once the concept has been refined, I use evaluation methods to determine the validity of the materials, electronic components, colours etc. I complete mock up electronic components and models to quickly visualize the final product.

MANUFACTURING ANALYSIS

Upon reaching this phase of development, I would have already refined the concept and defined the perimeters of the product. At this point in time, I would generate 3D renderings of component housings and other parts with exact measurements of each element.

FINAL TOUCHES

At this point we are only minor steps away from having a final product that will boost your company's prodcut line and originality. Here we would go through final specifications and any minor changes in appearance. Next, you and your company would then submit a final approval for the design and manufacturing begins.

Page 13: Heather Jeffery Design Process Portfolio

FINAL PRODUCT & PROTOTYPE

We almost have the final product in our hands, to get to this stage could take anywhere between 3 months and 3 years depending on the product and design factors. At this point, I would present the prototype, final renderings, part drawings and other neccessary information to the manufacturer and we move on towards manufacturing our new product!
