What is heat?

• Heat may be defined as energy in transit from a high temperature object to a lower temperature object (a form of energy that is transferred by a difference in temperature).

• Given what Bill Nye had to say. Let’s add to our definition: Even cold things have heat. The molecules merely move more slowly. The more molecules the more heat energy.

Baffle Your Skin Experiment

• What did you notice when you took part in this experiment?

• Most students noticed that the hand that had been in the cold water for approximately one minutes time before entering the room temperature water, felt much warmer in the room temperature water than the other hand which had been in hot water.

Extension Question

• If Midori lies in the sun for 20 minutes and Erin lies in the shade for 20 minutes before they both decide to go swimming, how will the water feel to each girl? Why?

• If Midori lies in the sun for 20 minutes while Erin lies in the shade for 20 minutes before they each decide to go swimming, the water will likely feel warmer to Erin than it does to Midori. After sitting in the sun the water will feel cool against Midori’s skin, however since Erin has been sitting in the cool shade the water will likely feel luke warm or warm to Midori.

So…what should we take away from all of this?

• How hot something seems to be when you touch it depends on how warm your skin already is!
