October 3, 4, and 5, 2012 The Depot, Minneapolis, MN

A mere 574 years ago, Gutenberg created moveable type, thereby inventing one of man’s most constant companions—the bound book. Here in the 21st century, we’re still struggling to accept the fact that this marvelous invention is chang-ing in extraordinary ways. Books have become format-agnostic. They’re saved as files, stored on computers and in the cloud, and transformed into e-books and apps for tablets and smart phones. Books occupy our content-rich world in ways we never predicted they would.

As a result, those of us who publish and sell books must remain endlessly adaptable, light on our feet, and willing to re-envision our work on a regular basis. In an industry where change is constant, it’s more important than ever for us to gather and exchange ideas.

Hosted cooperatively by the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association (GLIBA) and the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association (MIBA), the Heartland Fall Forum was created to strengthen independent bookselling during one of its most dynamic times in history. While we exist to serve our separate memberships, we’ve combined our trade shows to gain strength in numbers. We’re very excited to have created this venue and hope it serves everyone well as our industry continues to evolve. We’re thrilled you joined us. We hope your experience at the Heartland Fall Forum brings you many new connections and exciting ideas.

Voice of the Heartland The Voice of the Heartland award is a Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association tribute to a person or association that has shown an exceptional commitment to regional bookselling. This year, the GLIBA board of directors unanimously selected Liz Murphy of the Learned Owl, and Roberta Rubin of The Book Stall at Chestnut Court to receive the award. Both women have been store owners for 30 years, as well as outstanding participants in the bookselling and local communities. Both have served on the GLIBA board (as well as many community organizations), and as experienced members of the association have contributed time, money, and hard work to help our member stores thrive.

Midwest Booksellers Choice Awards The annual Midwest Booksellers Choice Awards celebrate the best of the literary Midwest. Knowledgeable booksellers from the independent bookstores throughout the MIBA region nominate their favorite titles of the year, then vote on the top three nominations to select the winning authors in each of the five categories below. She lives in western Massachusetts.

Carrie’s Highly Subjective List

A. Charley’s Grill (inside The Depot) You’ll be satisfied at Charley’s Grill, especially if you get the walleye reuben with sweet potato fries. You just won’t get any fresh air.

B. Dunn Bros Coffee Exit the front door of The Depot, turn right, and enter the old freight house brick building. Great coffee and plenty of light breakfast and lunch options. The Iced Nirvana is all they say it is. All Dunn Bros are locally owned.

C. 112 Eatery, 112 North 3rd St From a chef with a James Beard award. Chic urban setting with late hours and inventive, yet classic food chefs eat after their shift. The cheeseburger with brie on a toasted English muffin is fabled, as well as the fries with tarragon aioli. Anthony Bourdain would go here if he were a bookseller. Call first. (612) 343-7696

D. Nami, 251 First Ave NIt wouldn’t make Jiro Ono proud, but it’s good sushi in a comfortable, even romantic, warehouse setting. You might have seen Wasabi across from The Depot on Washington Ave, but don’t go there. Go to Nami instead.

E. Kieran's Irish Pub, 601 North 1st Ave Worthwhile eating and even better drinking from the city's most popular pub impresario, Kieran Folliard. Beautiful old-world setting and enough brew to keep a beer-lover happy all evening.

F. Tea House, 330 2nd Avenue S Addictive Szechuan food tucked away on the skyway level on the second floor of the Towle building. Get some steamed buns for me.

G. Crooked Pint, 501 Washington Avenue SI haven’t gone here yet, but it belongs on the map for its big beer selection and stumbling distance to The Depot.

H. Zen Box Izakaya, 602 Washington Ave SI haven’t been here, either, but it would make a perfect lunch spot during the show.

I. Sawatdee, 607 Washington Ave SConvenient to The Depot for a nice Thai lunch fix. If you have extra time on your hands, head to Kindee to enjoy more contemporary Thai food in a gorgeous setting.

J. Kindee, 719 South 2nd St Snappy Thai food situated in the lovely nexus of Spoonriver, the Guthrie, and the Mill City ruins. If you go, be sure to stroll through the Guthrie to see the cantilevered lobby known as the “endless bridge” overlooking the Mississippi River falls and landscape.

K. Spoonriver, 750 South 2ndGet a copy of Brenda Langton’s Spoonriver Cookbook signed at the University of Minnesota’s booth, then stroll over to her restaurant to enjoy her award-winning food firsthand. L. Sea Change (inside The Guthrie), 806 South 2nd St If you love fish as much as I do, here’s a great spot for you led by a James Beard award winning chef. Get oysters and their pineapple-infused vodka.

M. Open Book, 1011 Washington Ave S The country’s largest center for the literary arts and a beautiful setting for The Loft, Milkweed Editions, and other nonprofits. Includes Coffee Gallery and a book arts gift shop run by Minnesota Center for Book Arts.

Heartland Here

N. Spill the Wine, 1101 Washington Ave S Recently voted #1 wine bar and #1 wine list in the Twin Cities, with an enjoyable casual restaurant to boot.

O. Grumpy’s Bar & Grill, 1111 Washington Ave SYou’ll be happy at Grumpy’s if you like a clean dive bar, ample bar food, and a big pool table.

P. Comfort Suites, 425 South 7th StOur extra hotel booked for the show. Q. Nye’s Polonaise Room, 112 East Hennepin AveVoted best bar in America by Esquire magazine, you’ll travel back 60 years the moment you step inside and ensconce yourself on a red tufted leather banquette next to the piano bar. I’d suggest you order a drink from the ample martini list and enjoy a Polonaise Plate, but then you may never come back to the show.

R. Pracna, 117 2nd Street SE If you’re at Nye’s and still craving adventure, head to Pracna, the oldest restaurant in Minneapolis, and enjoy the beautiful walk and classy setting. Just don’t go hungry. Get a drink here and carry on your way.

S. Aster Café, 125 SE Main St Next door to Pracna, enjoy a splendid nightcap along the river in this jewel of a Bohemian setting serving charming drinks your discerning literary grandmother would like. (Coming from me, that’s a big compliment.)

T. St. Anthony Main, 115 SE Main St Catch a movie here if you’re staying in town.

U. Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet MallA soaring modern setting for everyone’s favorite institution, plus a Dunn Bros to get your caffeine fix on.

What would a book-reading, food-driven, city-loving flaneur do in her free time during lunch or after the show? That’s what this list is for. The points farthest from The Depot are a 15-minute walk away. Don’t forget, the bar at The Depot is a great place to kick back with your friends and colleagues.
