School Closing Information

As the winter approaches, occasional bad weather necessitates the closing of school for the safety of our students. School closing information will be announced over the radio station KAWL (1370) and television stations KHAS, KLKN, NTV and KOLN.

We also use an automated phone message service through School Messenger to notify parents about school closings as well. With this service it is very important that we have current numbers on file. Please call the school office if anything changes.

You may also call our school closing phone line at 402-723-4421. If a decision has been made the night before, the closing will be announced around 10:00pm. In the mornings it will be announced on the half hour from 6:30am to 8:00am.

I want to utilize my space this month to mention some of our results from the state assessments that our students complete each spring. In reviewing our latest data at our January professional development day, we are pleased with the progress of our students and feel that we have many great things happening within our classrooms. In nearly every subject area and every grade level, we are at or above the state averages. As our students move through the school system, our achievement grows to show a result well above those statewide averages. The more aligned we are in our efforts, the more efficient and effective we are in helping our students reach the benchmarks set by the state department and to reach goals of becoming a well-rounded lifelong learner. An annual report to our patrons will be coming in February that outlines specific achievement data and many other items of interest.

A very important component to our success lies with the school board and their dedication to making decisions that are best for our students. We recognized two of our outgoing members at the December meeting. Boyd Stuhr, Jr. and Glenn Larson. These gentlemen served our district for eight years and we are very appreciative of their service. In January, we welcomed two new members: Tammy Ott and Steve Stebbing. We are looking forward to working with our new board to continue the growth and success at Heartland!

Heartland Community Schools is open to accepting more option enrollment students and we feel that we have much to offer! A student from another district may enroll at Heartland when approved through the option enrollment program.

If you know of someone who would be interested in enrolling their children at Heartland, please have them call the superintendent’s office at 402-723-4434. High school students must have an option enrollment application filed and approved before March 15, 2019 in order to be immediately eligible for extracurricular activities in the fall.

College & Career Day for Juniors!

On January 25th, all HCS juniors joined students from McCool Junction, Dorchester, Shickley, Exeter-Milligan & Friend at College & Career Day. This day was designed to get juniors thinking about their senior year and cover topics pertinent to juniors. They participated in these informational sessions: test prep, steps to get into college, business panel, legal issues facing teens, financial responsibility and personal safety. There was also time to chat with a

around 15 college reps.

Scholastic Book Fair The Scholastic Book Fair for Heartland students grades K-12 will be open during Parent/Teacher Conferences in March. Volunteers are welcome to assist with the Book Fair. Please contact Mrs. Mestl at 402-723-4434. The book fair will be located in the high school library.

SECOND GRADE VISIT TO HERITAGE PARK Before winter break, Mrs. Blase and her second grade class were reading the book “An Early American Christmas” by Tomie dePaola.

As many people know, the Hertiage Park sets up for an old-fashioned Christmas, so it tied into the second-grade curriculum very well.

While the second graders were at the Park, they were able to see first-hand how Christmas was celebrated years ago and how people lived without all of the extravagant technology we have today. The students took lessons in the old school house and put on a mini Christmas Program. Before leaving, they made paper chains and were given a sack filled with cutie oranges, peanuts in their shells, a variety of wrapped candy and also a candy cane.

We are so fortunate to have such a great facility so close to home where students can learn so much! This was definitely an experience they will remember for a very long time!

Adult Living Skills

Mrs. Regier’s Adult Living Skills class is a semester long course that equips students with the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes needed to prepare them for life after high school. Our current project is building a resume. Each student will leave Adult Living Skills with a current resume, recipes to use when living on their own, laundry tips, and knowledge in the areas below:

Huskie PAWS Celebration

Throughout the school year, elementary students have been learning about behavioral expectations. Every month, a different area of the school has been a focus. Students have learned and practiced the expectations for the areas of: classroom, playground, cafeteria, gym, hallway, restroom, and assemblies.

Beginning in mid November, students have been able to receive a “PAWS Ticket” for demonstrating positive choices and/or following expectations. PAWS stands for: Practice Safety/Act Responsibly/Wise Choices/Show Respect. On Tuesday, January 8th, elementary students earned a “Just Move Celebration” for filling the container full of tickets. Students enjoyed a variety of dances and fun together with peers and staff. The celebration was full of music, fun, and energy!

Congratulations to the DIGI-MINDS and the Astro Hackers On Saturday, January 12th, 2019, Heartland’s FIRST Lego League robotics teams competed in the Columbus Qualifier Event in

Columbus, Nebraska. The Astro Hackers (6th Grade) and DIGI-MINDS (JH) have been putting in countless hours gearing up for this

event. Both teams had to identify a physical or social problem faced by humans during long duration space exploration and propose a

solution. The Astro Hackers developed an exercise device called “Muscle Madness” that would give astronauts an opportunity to use resistance bands to do upper body exercises such as pull-ups. The DIGI-MINDS created scented bands they call “Sniff Snap” that uses lavender blooms, coffee beans and chopped up corn cobs infused with different essential oils. The bands were created to remind astronauts of smells on Earth as well as relieve stress and improve concentration. After the morning judging rounds (Project, Core Valves, Robot Design), the teams spent the afternoon competing in the Robot Games. These games are exciting and very intense due to the fact that the teams only have 2.5 minutes to complete their missions. We are proud to report that both Heartland teams completed a perfect run! The Astro Hackers finished with a score of 135 to earn 2nd place in the game portion while the DIGI-MINDS finished with a score of 100 to earn 4th place. After all the judging was completed, it was announced that both Heartland teams had qualified for the state competition along with 14 other teams. There were a total of 39 teams at the event. The DIGI-MINDS also won the Robot Design Award for their excellence in mechanical design, innovation, and programming effectiveness and strategy. A HUGE congratulations to all the robotics students!

The state competition will be on Saturday, February 16th at SAC Museum (Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum) near Ashland. Team members on the DIGI-MINDS team are: Ava Tessman, Madelyn Maltsberger, Wyatt Panko, Benjamin Janzen, Owen Mierau, and Ryan Hiebner. Team members on the Astro Hackers team are: Austin Schmidt, Weston Ohrt, Jace Friesen, Brady Goertzen, Thane Wetjen, and Blake Goertzen.Wishing good luck to the teams at State LEGO Robotics.

Band German Smorgasbord

The annual Band German Smorgasbord will be held Saturday, March 16th, 2019. The meal will be served from 5:00pm to 7:30pm and a band concert will be held at 7:45pm. Adult tickets are $15.00, children ages 4-12 are $7.00. Any child under the age of 4 is free. Tickets will go on sale February 18th, 2019. Tickets can be purchased through band members, calling/stopping by the Heartland School office, or online. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Smorgasbord Tickets will be Offered Online!While you can still go to the school office or see a band student to purchase Smorgasbord tickets, another option this year will be to purchase your tickets online. Go to brownpapertickets.com and search for “Heartland” to see a list of our events. You can also visit our website at heartlandschools.org where we will have a link to the ticket site.

There is a small convenience fee required by the company for online purchases. The total purchase price will be the cost of the tickets + $0.99 per ticket + 3.5% credit card fees. On one ticket, the cost of a normal $15 ticket will be $16.52 including fees. If you choose this option, you will be able to name which student to whom you would like to credit the sale.

Tickets go on sale February 18th. Please let us know how we can help!

Volunteers Needed!!

We are looking for some volunteers on Friday, March 1st, 2019 at 3:30pm (or anytime after that works for you) in the school cafeteria to help make the verenike which will be used for the Band’s Annual Smorgasbord Fundraiser!Contact Grant or Jami Schmidt with questions.

Sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences Online

Starting February 11th

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on the evenings of March 4th & 5th. Parents of elementary or jr. high students can now pick which available time works best in their schedule using our website at heartlandschools.org. In the top menu, choose “Parent Teacher Conferences” and follow the screen prompts. You will be asked to log in to the website. If you do not already have an account, you can create one during this process. You can use your account to receive other information, as well. If you would like detailed instructions on how to schedule conferences, go to our website and click on the “For Parents” menu. Give us a call with any questions at 402-723-4434.

The Community Blood Bank will hold a Bloodmobile on February 23rd, 2019 from 9:00am-2:00pm at the Henderson Home Show.
