Pastor Search Committee:

As we begin 2019 the pastor search team would like to say

“THANK YOU!” for you prayers and encouragement. The past few

months have been both challenging and rewarding. At one point we

felt we would have brought you a senior pastor candidate by now, but

God had different plans.

We have met many good men, some only on paper and others

through video interviews. To be honest, we’ve encountered a few

undesirables. All in all, though at times it's been physically and

emotionally draining, the search process has been and continues to be

educational and encouraging.

The team asks you to continue to pray with us as we trust God to

lead us to His man for our church. We choose to believe 2019 will be

a fruitful and fulfilling year here at First Southern Baptist Church.

For those of you that may not be familiar with our Can

Connection it is a friendly competition that helps serve

others in our community. You form a group, put your crea-

tivity to work, and build something amazing out of can

goods to later be donated to the food cupboard

ministry. Be watching for more details to come.

Discipleship

A New Year, a New You. This concept is pretty universal. When we find ourselves at the begin-

ning of a natural cycle in life (new year, new job, start of school, etc.…) we often find ourselves ask-

ing if there are changes that need to be made in our lives. If we are honest with ourselves, the an-

swer is always going to be “YES” this side of eternity. None of us have “made it” in life. There is

always something that we could do better. There is always room for improvement. Even within

the life of a church, we must ask the questions of “what’s next?” and “how can we grow in our at-

tempts to be the church God desires us to be?”

As we approached 2019, Pastor Todd and I began having conversations together and with others in

our church about how to enter the new year with a goal and focus. We wanted to start the year

knowing that as a church we were going to keep moving forward, and not just maintain the status

quo until a new pastor was hired. As a church we voted on and adopted a new vision statement this

past year.

“FSBC Liberal desires to be a church that engages relationally with God and our neighbors, equips the believers for the work of ministry, and evangelizes the world with the good news of

Jesus Christ.”

After many conversations and much prayer, a focus for 2019 was taken straight out of our vision

statement. So, without further ado, I want to invite you to join with us this coming year as we

“Engage.”

The hope of this focus is threefold. We want to help each person in our church family “Engage

with God,” “Engage with His Family.” and “Engage with the World.” You will have multiple ways

to be challenged to “Engage” as we begin the year. Our Interim Pastor Randy Caddell will be

sharing with us each week messages from God’s Word to help us understand what it looks like to

Engage Relationally. Pastor Jeremy will be leading a Sunday Evening Study on Acts 1-12 where we

see the early church being established. This study will help us explore a time in scripture where we

see the young church Engaging with God, His Family, and the World. Pastor Todd will be leading

a Sunday Evening Study entitled “Together.” This study will explore 6 Biblical Characteristics of a

church that is growing in community.

Finally, as we believe that the foundation of Engagement starts with our relationship with God, we

are providing you with a tool to study God’s Word together this coming year. We will have a year

long reading plan printed in the Lobby that we are encouraging each of you to participate in. I can

think of few things that help us know someone better than listening to them tell us about them-

selves. God has given us His very words in the Bible, and we believe that spending time in His

Word is imperative to knowing Him more.

Will you join us this year? Will you “Engage with God?” Will you “Engage with His Family?”

Will you “Engage with the World?” I truly believe that if we take seriously the call to “Engage

Relationally” we will grow in our relationships with God and our neighbors. I hope that you will

take seriously the call to “Engage” in 2019. I would love to get to know you better.

~ Pastor Jeremy

Page 6 Volume , Issue

Hey family! A new year is coming and with that we are introducing a new focus for

our church. By this point you have hopefully been hearing about Engage 2019. The

first third of our new vision reads “FSBC Liberal desires to be a church that engages

relationally with God and others.” In the coming year we are going to take a deep dive

into what that really means for us, and how we can better live that mission out.

As a pastoral staff we are all taking part in this initiative. On Sunday mornings

Pastor Randy will be preaching sermons to inspire us and show us what it looks like to

engage relationally first with God, next with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and then

with the world around us. Pastor Jeremy will be leading a group through a study of the

early church in Acts to see how this concept applied to them. Today I would like to talk

to you about my part in this.

I’ll be stepping off my beaten path to lead a group of adults on Sunday nights

through a study called “Together”. The goal for our evenings this spring is not just to

accumulate more head knowledge, but to take an honest look at how our church is liv-

ing out the call in scripture to live life together, see where we are doing well, and where

we can grow. We are hoping that both Pastor Jeremy’s group and this one can be a cata-

lyst for great growth in our church in the area of relational engagement.

My study will be looking at these six core values of community:

Devote Daily

Pursue Relationally

Counsel Biblically

Live Authentically

Admonish Faithfully

Engage Missionally

Sound interesting? If so please contact me right away to sign up for this journey, or

put your name on the sheet in the church lobby. I look forward to growing TOGETHER

with you in the coming year!

~ Todd

NEW TUESDAY LADIES' STUDY beginning in January!

Shari Abbott will lead us in studying "Sermon on the Mount" with

Jen Wilkin. This study will include a study book with group work

and personal study segments for 9 sessions. For more information,

go to Jen Wilkin's website.

"What does it mean to be a citizen of the kingdom of Heaven? The

Sermon on the Mount articulates what the life of a Christ follower

should look like, asking us the same questions it posed to its origi-

nal hearers: How should a disciple relate to sin? To others? To

the Law? How does a disciple think, speak, and act?..."

JOIN other women each Tuesday morning, 9:30-11:30 a.m., as we

gather around the table to dig into God's Word together.

Volume , Issue Page 7

At our Ladies' Legacy Christmas get-together, our theme was "Christmas Is Kindness,”

where we focused on human kindness by sharing Christmas kindnesses in our lives and on God's

extreme kindness to us at Christmas.

Every December Ladies' Legacy collects funds for a cause around the world, and for 2018 we

chose to help Sherrie Fausey with an offering to help her purchase Christmas gifts for her students

and staff at Christian Light School in Haiti, a total of 400. This is quite an undertaking for her. She

takes some items in her suitcase, orders some things to be shipped to Haiti, and will fill in with

items purchased in Haiti, for a total of more than $700. She also sends beans and rice home with

the children the last day of school, which costs about $500, some of which has been donat-

ed. Beans, rice, and gifts for the baby feeder program has been covered by a church in Maine.

Sherrie plans to serve a fried chicken lunch on the last day of school. For the staff party, for 65

people, she is baking cupcakes to go with sodas. Peggy is providing gifts for the staff. It's our

pleasure to join with many other churches and individuals who support Sherrie and CLS.

The December 13 devotional in Daily Acts of Kindness was a reminder of how we can join forces

to bless others, especially at Christmas. Kendra built on Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, "Two people are bet-

ter off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person fails, the other can reach out

and help."

As Kendra wrote, "You don't have to know someone from another part of the world to be

able to send money or needed items... (But we are privileged to be a small part of Christian

Light School)...Because two are better than one, joining forces with those around us to

bless someone or help out with a problem, either locally or across the ocean, can make all

the difference in someone else's life. We were meant to do life and show kindness in com-

munity because there is strength in numbers." ~ Kendra
