‘Cupid, Draw Back Your Bow, And Let Your Arrow Go…

Straight to…My Lover’s Heart, for Me…’                                                                                              “Cupid” ‐ Lyrics by Sam Cooke, 1961

Well, no doubt Cupid is restringing his bow as I write this, getting ready for his biggest day of the year – February 14th – popularly known around the world as “Valentine’s Day”. Cupid, as the “Love Bug” is fondly named, has been bringing lovebirds together for centuries. The little cherub with bows and arrows tucked into his quiver is ready to strike into the hearts of ladies and gents at a moment’s notice…wherever and whenever he gets the news that love is in the air. So, what is Valentine’s Day and how did Cupid get the job of matchmaking?

Some say the roots of Valentine’s Day are with Saint Valentine, a Roman who was killed for his faith on February 14, 269 A.D. He had refused to worship pagan gods and was sentenced to death by the emperor. Some stories say he was a priest who would secretly marry young couples who loved each other, but did not have parental permission to marry. St. Valentine is associated with “amor ” because he fell in love with the daughter of his jailer and would pass loving notes to her. His final note, just before he was executed, read, “from your Valentine’. His official “saint day” was established in 496 A.D.

Cupid, the adorable little cherub that we associate with Valentine’s Day, is the son of Venus, according to Roman mythology. To the ancient Romans, Cupid was the god of Love and the story went that once you were shot with an arrow from Cupid’s bow, you would fall in love with the next person you met. The legend continues that Cupid would not only use his arrows to make companionable persons fall in love, but that he often would mischievously target two unlikely companions just to see what kind of fireworks would happen.

It is often said that when a couple “falls in love” they have been hit with Cupid’s magic arrow. Perhaps that can explain why some couples have a gentile relationship and others find romance in their quarrels. I guess it just depends on if Cupid chooses to sling a “loving” or “mischievous” arrow from his bow – and who gets hit by what. May all of you be smitten by the gentile Love Bug at Valentine’s Day this year and really enjoy this fun and whimsical holiday of romance!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way

to Better Hearing…

Well, this month I have more of an embarrassing moment for a lady I read about, rather than a funny incident…but it simply goes to show how misunderstanding even one word can truly make a difference in effective and clear communication.

This poor lady (I’ll call her “Jill”) was at a party where her ability to hear was sorely challenged. A friend that she hadn’t seen in a long while was happy to catch up with her, and in the course of their conversation was telling Jill what was new in her life. There was an awkward silence at one point when Jill totally misunderstood what her friend had said. “Congratulations!” was Jill’s response to her friend’s update that she was getting a divorce. Her friend looked at Jill oddly and questioned, “Congratulations?” Jill said, “Sure! Everyone knows you’ve wanted a new horse for years!”

Jill finally decided it was time for hearing aids. How about you? Have you bumbled your way through one too many conversations?

Remember: we’re here to help.

Buddy’s Buddy’s Buddy’s Buddy’s Bio...Bio...Bio...Bio...

Well, it’s time to catch

up with BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy and

Mariela again and –

true to form – BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy is making it hard as ever

for Mariela to cuddle up to him. Recently the

Spencer family left BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy in the care of a

young neighbor for several days. Now,

Mariela keeps a clean and comfy home, so it

was with some dismay that when the family

returned, she found a soiled spot where

BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy had piddled on the floor. And, of

course, he chose to do his business on the

carpet, not the tile. He didn’t even have the

decency to hide it in an out-of-the-way location.

Just where did BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy leave his watermark?

Believe it or not, he had the chutzpah to leave

his signature right at the top of the stairs, in

the pathway to the master bedroom,

directly in front of Mariela’s desk. Sorry,

BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy; zero points on that one.

Then, the young dogsitter reported that one

day when she came over, she found both of

the double glass doors had blown wide open

during the heavy winds and rain and she had

been concerned that BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy had taken off on

one of his famous jaunts. Needless to say, she

was surprised to find BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy just sitting there,

“standing guard” in the open doorway. Here

he had the whole outside world right at his

pawtips, with nobody home to stop him from

leaving, and he simply sat inside watching the

world go by. Mariela just rolled her eyes at the

absurdity of it all.

So, it was no surprise the other night, during

Luke’s Indian Guides meeting at the Spencer

home, that when one of the dads recommended

the boys watch the door so BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy wouldn’t

escape, Mariela dryly suggested, “Maybe we

could take his collar off.”

I think BuddyBuddyBuddyBuddy lost this month’s round…

HEARING AID TAX CREDIT BILL REINTRODUCED

The Hearing Aid Tax Credit has been reintroduced into Congressboth the House of Representatives and the Senate offering high bithere’s hope the bill will be considered as part of whatever health reform proposals emerge before the end of 2011. Representatives Vern Ehlers (RMcCarthy (D-NY) introduced the bill in an effort to provide assistance to some of the 32 million people in America who need hearing aids to treat their hearing loss.

Despite the fact that one in ten people suffer from hearing impairment, Medicare and most insexpressly exclude hearing aid coverage. For seniors, untreated hearing loss causes additional costs to Medicare and other health programs due to loss of independence, social isolation, depression, safety issues, and decreased quality of life. hearing impaired persons of all age groups, in all loss categories – for those who wear hearing aids. While hearing aids can help treat 95% of all hearing losses, less than one-fourth of hearing impaired persons wear hearing aids, largely due to cost. If enacted, H.R. 1646 would provide a $500 tax credit

aid ($1000 per pair), for children and persons 55 years of age or older.

Although it is encouraging that this bill has been introduced again and is receiving support from both sides of the Congress floor, your support is essential to the passing of this bill into law. Let your Senators and district Representative know that a Hearing Aid Tax

Credit would make a real difference for you or someone you know. Contact your Congressmen and tell them how the Hearing Aid Tax Credit (H.R.1646) could help you and others who need hearing aids.

To encourage the passage of this bill, write or e-mail a personal letter directly to your Senators and Congressional Representative (you can find their names and addresses in

WHAT ABOUT RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES?

This is the second in a series of articles where Stuart will address your questions and

items of interest as they come up. Currently, talk of a “Rechargeable Battery” for your

hearing aids is at the top of everyone’s list. Here, Stuart will give you a clear and honest

assessment to the question:

Another issue is maintaining a consistent current flow in the hearing aid while the

battery is draining. With a rechargeable cell, the current output will taper off,

meaning you will have to increase volume to keep the hearing aid working at the

same level of performance, whereas the standard Zinc

obvious issues for the hearing aid manufacturers still remain the size of the cell, its

reliability and the (in)convenience of recharging.

rechargeable system. Technology has improved battery options and performance with

IDAHO LOONEY LAW: BOXES OF CANDY GIVEN AS ROMANTIC GIFTS MUST WEIGH AT LEAST 50 LB

Although Valentine’s Day is most often associated with “romantic” love, there is no reason to limit the festivities to the young, the youngat-heart, and the romance that comes with youth. Love that has seasoned over many years of relationship is not neces sugar and spice or hearts and flowers. Mature love that has deepenedover time, and love for friends, family, and those whom we are bound to in countless ways by the heart, should not be overlooked on February 14th. Love comes in many forms and does not have to be demonstrated by a quickened pulse or pounding heart of passion. We see evidence of this in our office every day.
