‘Lifestyle’ is a diffuse concept which used to denote the way of

living, social values, attitudes and activities. It is consist of

cultural and behavioral patterns and personal habits like

physical activity, diet, smoking, alcohol. Now a days, oral

health problem are associated with lifestyle changes

specifically dental caries, periodontal disease, loss of tooth.

Oral health is one of essential part of our life.

Effects on Oral Health

• Smoking as a strong lifestyle factor affecting oral health.About 90 percent of people with mouth cancer and sometypes of throat cancer have used tobacco.

• Tobacco use in the form of cigarette, cigar as well assmokeless tobacco, are significant risk factors in theprogression of periodontal disease.

• People may suffers from bleeding gums , red, swollen, ortender gums, persistent bad breath, loose or separatingteeth, loss of bone, denture fitting problem in edentulouspeople.

• Brushing of teeth in a proper way. Many people haveperception like hard bristles of brush is more effective thansoft bristles.

• Wrong brushing habit can cause "toothbrush abrasion" whichcan lead to sensitive teeth, receding gums and wear aroundthe root of the tooth.

• One important rule for brush bristles is able to bend and getright under the gums properly. It removes the bacteria andremove plaque from your teeth and gums. That plaque cancause gum disease and lead to tooth decay.

• The size of the brush’s head is important too, specifically for asmaller mouth. Brushes also have various sizes of handles anddifferent angles.

• Everyday diet also more prone to affect dental problem like sugar,high acidic drinks, any citric fruit. It can cause tooth decay,sensitivity, discoloring, small cracks and roughness at the edges ofteeth, wear down of enamel.

• For many years, people believed that fluoride prevents tooth decayand strengthen tooth enamel but we don’t realize that fluoride cancause dental fluorosis – most common in children,osteoporosis, thyroid problems, endocrine problems.

• Grinding and clenching tooth are also associated with severalfactors such as daytime stress, anxiety, heavy alcohol use,caffeine, smoking, and certain antidepressant drugs. It maycause tooth sensitivity, morning jaw pain, jaw fatigue orstiffness, clicking or popping sound of the jaw joints andenlarged jaw muscles.

• Obesity is a major health problem worldwide. It has manyimpact on dental health problem like dental caries, periodontaldiseases, tooth loss.

How to keep a healthy mouth:

• It's important to take care of your mouth and teeth even starts from

childhood. If you don’t then you have to suffer from dental problems

like caries, periodontal diseases, sensitivity, tooth loss.

• The challenges of improving oral health are entire burden for

individual alone. So, the responsibility must be shared between

individuals and their families, communities, state, government.

• You have to change your toothpaste from a typical commercial

brand that not includes high level fluoride and many other harmful

chemicals or use in right quantity of fluoride and using high quality

filter water.

•Using soft bristles brush which are very

comfortable for gums and remove plaque

properly.

•Grinding and clenching of tooth can be stop

by a splint or bite guard, physiotherapy

exercises.

•Good oral hygiene helps you stay healthier such as daily brushing

and flossing. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach

that might lead to oral infections like tooth decay and gum disease.
