It’s been an exciting summer at Pardee Hospital and we are pleased to announce several new

developments. A rededication was held on June 9 for The Orthopedic Center of Excellence to

celebrate the renovation of the wing. This celebration introduced five new recovery suites and

state-of-the-art technology.

The Pardee Hospital Board named James (Jay) Kirby II to the position of President and CEO.

He has more than 20 years of healthcare management experience, including serving most

recently as senior vice-president and chief administrative officer of Self Regional Healthcare in

Greenwood, S.C. for the past nine years. He is a certified Fellow through the American College

of Healthcare Executives and is also a Certified Medical Practice Executive through the

American College of Medical Practice Executives. “The high caliber of the physicians and staff

who work at Pardee combined with the strong community involvement led me to this position

and the area. It is an outstanding opportunity for me, my wife Tyra, and our children,” said

Kirby. He will begin at Pardee on August 1.

The Pardee Hospital Board also approved an affiliation agreement with UNC Health Care

System. This management agreement can help achieve cost savings and increased services

for residents. “Pardee is a well respected and exceptionally strong community provider that

shares a similar mission with UNC Health Care. We look forward to joining Pardee in

developing an even better healthcare system for the citizens of Henderson County and the

region,” said Gary L. Park, President of UNC Hospitals.

As fall approaches, we look forward to the opening of the new Comprehensive Wound Healing

Center at Pardee which will feature two new Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers. In August, Pardee

Choice, our fundraising efforts for the United Way and Pardee Foundation campaign will kick

off to raise $155,000. Pardee Hospital will continue serving as co-sponsor of the annual Apple

Festival Race and the first aid tent at the North Carolina Apple Festival in September. We look

forward to seeing you at the Apple Festival.

Patti Jane Dutcher is not just an orthopedic patient, she is a volunteer with Pardee’s Auxiliary. Patti Jane came to Pardee Hospital to visit her mother who had fallen. While tending to her mother, two ladies from the Auxiliary approached Patti Jane, explaining what the Auxiliary was and offering her a chance to serve the community with them. New to the Hendersonville community and inspired by the volunteers who approached her, she decided to become a volunteer.

Compounding issues soon hindered her work. She began having pain in her knees and decided to have Dr. Brooks perform orthopedic surgery on what ended up being both knees. After her surgeries, she noticed that something was wrong with her foot and ultimately had Dr. Mangone perform surgery to remedy a complication in her foot. She was confident in the doctors at Pardee since they had taken such good care of her mother in the past.

After her knee surgery, Patti Jane went to Joint Camp. Joint Camp is a week long program where patients become campers in the hospital. Through individual and group physical therapy, patients can recover together. At the end of the week, a celebration dinner is held as the patients are then released and given follow-up care plans. Recovering from each surgery, Patti Jane always had a positive attitude and enjoyed her time spent at Joint Camp. “Joint Camp has always been a good experience,” said Patti Jane. “They have great nurses, wonderful doctors and good food.”

Patti Jane also said her experience with Pardee Home Care was wonderful. She was impressed that Pardee Home Care staff even came to her home on a Sunday night in the pouring rain to visit her.

Pardee Rehab and Wellness Services was her last step in the recovery process.

Patti Jane made friends with many of the rehabilitation patients while attending her sessions at the center. Once she had met her goals, she was released from the Pardee Rehab and Wellness Center and went right back to doing what she loved, volunteering her time at Pardee Hospital.

“As a volunteer in the Gift Shop, I’m able to show my appreciation to the doctors who healed me, to the staff that put me on my feet and to the volunteers who are my friends.” said Patti Jane. She goes on to say, “The Orthopedic Center of Excellence keeps me on my feet, but the Auxiliary feeds my soul.”

For the past 15 years, Patti Jane has been a faithful and loving member of the Auxiliary. If you would like to become a member of the Auxiliary, or if you have any questions about the volunteers, please call (828) 698-7187.

what’s in a namePardee’s orthopedic program, the Orthopedic Center of Excellence, is considered among the best in the nation. This top-rated program has been specifically designed to guide you through a safer, more successful return to active living. Orthopedic patients at Pardee have access to the most advanced surgical techniques and rehabilitation that lead to faster recovery times.

Orthopedics primarily focuses on joint pain including hip replacements, knee replacements and shoulder replacement. Pardee prides itself in caring for our patients seamlessly from surgery to recovery. We know recovering in a hospital after surgery might not sound like a vacation. That is why we have state-of-the-art technology and highly-trained staff to ensure our patients are key, while also providing the comforts of home. We recently added five patient suites for your comfort. For additional comfort, we offer a special healthy menu, a salon and massage services.

Prehab is an important part of the services we offer at the Orthopedic Center of Excellence. This program is designed

to build your flexibility and overall physical condition, as well as strengthen muscles in the specific surgery site prior to joint surgery in order to facilitate your recovery. This program can help you regain independence after surgery in a more timely matter. It can also reduce the need for nurses and other health services at home, which can be costly. We suggest you participate in 17 sessions — three per week — which will help you prepare physically for your operation. Ask your physician to refer you to the program at least six weeks before your operation is scheduled. You will be evaluated for wellness and fitness by a Pardee licensed physical therapist.

Although hip, knee and shoulder surgery make up a good percentage of what we provide, surgery for the foot, ankle, wrist and hand are performed on a regular basis. The Comprehensive Spine Center at Pardee is also an exciting addition to Henderson County. Pardee’s specialized spine care team is committed to helping our patients relieve pain, restore motion and regain activity so they can quickly get back to enjoying their lifestyle.

Nothing is more disheartening than the inability to enjoy your favorite activities.

Playing with his kids was too painful for Eric until he discovered the Pardee Orthopedic Center of Excellence. Our center ranks among the top orthopedic programs in the region and nation. We achieve this ranking by meeting the highest standards for quality of care, use of technology and staffing expertise.

On June 9th, in the Orthopedics Courtyard, the Pardee Foundation hosted a rededication of the Orthopedics Center of Excellence. Edward Lilly, III, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at Pardee and co-chair of the renovation campaign, explained the growth and renovation to the guests. “This unit was previously known as The Lane Wing, which was started as a long term nursing facility by generous donors Melvin and Georgiana Lane. Pardee sees over 2,600 orthopedic procedures annually, of which more than 520 are joint replacements. Currently there are nine orthopedic surgeons on staff at Pardee, with specialties in general orthopedics, total joint replacement, foot and ankle procedures, shoulder, hand, and spine procedures,” said Dr. Lilly. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of the community donors, auxillary and foundations with their gifts to Pardee Foundation, who funded over $600,000 for this project.

When you give to Pardee Hospital Foundation, you’re giving your family, friends and neighbors a big, healthy hug. You’re also giving them — and you — a better shot at a healthy tomorrow. Why? Because every dollar that Pardee Foundation receives goes directly to Pardee Hospital to benefit you. Thanks to compassionate individual and corporate donors who invest in our community’s healthcare, Pardee Foundation has raised nearly $26 million since 1996. Those generous gifts have purchased millions of dollars of life-saving diagnostic medical equipment, funded medical services for the uninsured, helped neighbors battle cancer and much more. Pardee Foundation gifts have funded some critical needs, in the past 15 years including $4.8 million in 2001 for Emergency Department renovations; $2 million in 2003 for a surgical expansion; $1.6 million in 2005 for radiation-oncology improvements; and nearly $700,000 for the 2010 orthopedics department’s renovations.

Women Helping Women FundThe Women Helping Women Program underscores our community’s charitable heart. Since the first WHW efforts began in 1998, the Foundation has received more than $1.4 million to pay for mammograms and other medical screenings and treatments for patients in need, purchased diagnostic equipment and improved facilities at Pardee Hospital’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. In the last 14 years, WHW contributions have helped more than 900 women obtain medical treatments and screenings for breast, cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers, osteoporosis and cartiac ultrasound exams that test for stroke and heart disease. The 2011 Women Helping Women Committee, chaired by Sharon Koffman who also serves on the Pardee Foundation Board, has set $100,000 as this year’s goal. Major sponsors at publication time included Pardee Hospital Auxiliary, Teddi Segal, Ann Fritschner, Vivian S. Hoeppner, HomeTrust Bank, Sharon and Marc Koffman, Lynn S. Matykiewicz, TD Bank, N.A., Donalee Wermeister and Shelley’s Jewelry and Hearts on Fire, who are donating a diamond necklace for a raffle during the luncheon.

Women Helping Women EventAmy Silverstein, author of “Sick Girl,” an acclaimed 2007 memoir that chronicles her death-defying battle with heart disease, will appear as the keynote speaker at the WHW luncheon on Friday, Oct. 14. The night before, she will appear at an intimate Meet the Speaker dinner.

At age 24, while studying law at New York University, Silverstein’s heart suddenly failed. She needed a heart transplant to survive. Her physicians gave her 10 years. Twenty years later, Silverstein is still going strong. A popular speaker and attorney, she gives audiences witty insights about succeeding against challenging odds. Each year the WHW Committee lifts up several brave individuals to honor as Pardee Foundation Women of Hope, local survivors of cancer and other serious health issues. The new honorees will join the Women of Hope display on the walls of the Comprehensive Cancer Center on Justice Street. To determine whether you or someone in need qualifies for financial assistance from the WHW program, please call Pardee Hospital Financial Services at (828) 698-7306 to schedule an appointment. Grateful PatientPardee Hospital patients have a new way to say thank you to a doctor, nurse or staff member who has provided outstanding care or touched their heart with comforting words or a warm smile. It’s called the Grateful Patient program. Whether you’re a recent Pardee patient, a relative or friend of a patient, or a patient from years past, anyone can become a Grateful Patient and honor a special caregiver or staff member by making a tax-deductible contribution to Pardee Foundation. Honorees will receive a Grateful Patient certificate and recognition within the hospital. Contributions will be used where they are most needed — to improve patient care and purchase vital medical equipment and supplies. Please consider mailing a Grateful Patient donation to Pardee Hospital Foundation at 800 North Justice St., Hendersonville, NC, 28791. You can also contribute online at www.pardeehospitalfoundation.org, or call (828) 696-4666 for more information.
