Most Alabamians know James Spann as the state’s iconic weatherman. He’s an award-winning chief meteorologist at ABC 33/40 in Birmingham, and he broadcasts weather forecasts on 26 radio stations across the U.S. We know his catchphrases, such as “Respect the polygon.” And, we often judge storms based on his shirt sleeves — if sleeves are rolled up, it’s time to prepare for severe weather.

Spann says he’s always been fascinated by the weather, even as a child growing up in Greenville, a small town in South Alabama. He moved to Tuscaloosa as a fifth-grade student so his mother could attend the University of Alabama. His career in communications began as a DJ for a local rock ‘n’ roll station while attending high school.

But it was Spann’s ham radio hobby that led him to meteorology. On May 27, 1973, a tornado hit Brent and city officials called for help. James headed to the devastated community where five people died during the storm. The teen assisted communications

between state and local relief agencies.

“On Sunday night, May 27, 1973, I saw serious tornado damage for the first time in my life, and it changed my life. The sights and sounds are still fresh in my mind; almost like it happened yesterday,” Spann wrote on the Alabama WX Weather Blog (www.

alabamawx.com). “I arrived with a group from Tuscaloosa within one hour of the tornado, and we were all stunned at what we saw. Eerie darkness, an odd odor (many people that have experienced call it the ‘smell of death’), roads blocked by trees, and debris everywhere. I

wound up coming back the next morning, and stayed in Centreville (adjacent to Brent) handling communication from a church.”

Throughout the 1970s, Spann would take his ham radio equipment to communities struck by severe weather and help with communications. Still, he chose to study electrical engineering at the University of Alabama.

“Back then, no one was going to tell a child to study meteorology. I still think I would’ve made a good electrical engineer,” he laughs.

Spann credits his longevity — he’s been a TV weather anchor for 38 years — with his ability to bond with people.

“People know if you’re sincere. If you’re heartfelt, they’ll flock to you.”

Spann has gathered an impressive following around the world. Along with television and radio, he connects through Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Periscope, Pinterest, a blog, the WeatherBrains podcast and more. On Facebook and Twitter combined, he has more than 832,000 followers.

While reaching the masses, Spann has the unique ability to make his audience feel as if he’s having a personal conversation with each one.

“I believe in bonding with people. Now, with social media, I can have two-way relationships with people. By connecting with them every day, I’m earning their trust so they know where to turn during a crisis.

“And I’m an old guy. I’ve been around since the 70s and I speak somewhere every day. I go where people live and work,” he adds.

In 1978, Spann started his television career at WCFT-CBS where he filled an array of roles from news anchor to weatherman. “My short gig in sports was a disaster,” he says.

A year later, he became an “official” weatherman at age 23.

The self-described general weather dweeb joined WBRC in 1996. His dedication has earned him professional distinction and two of the highest awards in the U.S. for broadcast meteorologists. Spann was named Broadcaster of the Year by the National Weather Association in 2012, and he won the American Meteorological Society’s Award for Broadcast Meteorology in 2013. He also has two Emmys.

While Spann didn’t earn a degree in meteorology, he was one of the first weather anchors in the nation to be certified as a broadcast meteorologist. He challenges anyone to test his knowledge of the weather. For him, it’s

been a lifelong study. The meteorologist is

known for his marathon coverage when severe weather threatens communities in Alabama. When lives are in danger, he feels completely justified.

“In 2015, we interrupted an NBA game for a tornado in Midfield and southwest Birmingham. People could’ve died. After that, the first email I received said ‘You should’ve been aborted by a coat hanger.’ Some people just live in a world of hate and anger.

“The internet can bring out the worst in some people. You just have to handle them with grace and sass to survive.”

Spann jokes that the secret to his success is lack of sleep. “I haven’t slept since 1973.”

His day starts at 4:52 a.m. with radio and television broadcasts and usually ends at midnight.

“Work ethic has made me successful. We all have the same 24 hours. How you spend them determines who you are,” he says. “Anybody can make time for what they love.”

A strong work ethic was essential for growing

up in rural Alabama for Spann. His father left the family and his mother struggled to get by.

“I love Rick Bragg’s book All Over But The Shouting. He captures that feeling of being dirt-poor in the South. I grew up with hard-working, hard-living people. Where you come from can define you. It’s up to you decide how it will shape you.”

Spann says when his mother moved their family to Tuscaloosa it was a challenge for him.

“But it had to happen. It made me who I am.”While most people know Spann as a meteorologist

and a familiar face in pop culture, he says his roles as husband and father are more important. He and his wife Karen have two sons. His “free” time is spent as a children’s wor-

ship leader at Double Oak Community Church in Mt. Laurel. He also serves as chairman of the board for Grandview Medical Center, and he still loves his amateur radio hobby. His call is WO4W.

Spann’sweathertips

When asked about preparing for severe weather, James Spann begins with April 27, 2011.

“It was our finest and our worst day.”In Alabama alone, 238 people died while 218

tornadoes devastated the Southeast.“There were excellent warnings. The loss of life was

inexcusable,” he adds. “We realized that we have to understand how people act.”

Outdoor warning sirens are Spann’s first target. Never rely on them for alerts, he warns. Instead, use weather alert radios and smartphone apps.

“The siren mentality is just wrong.”Research has shown that most people can’t locate

their homes on a map which is another problem during storms.

“At least 75 percent of the questions on Facebook are about location. People just can’t find themselves in a map. That’s why I use landmarks.”

While people might not know where their community is on a radar map, Spann hopes naming restaurants, churches and other spots during severe weather coverage makes his audience realize how quickly a storm is approaching them.

His other preparedness suggestions include:s Determine a safe spot in your home.

“Don’t wait until the storm is on you. Now is the best time to make a plan.”s Use a helmet. “While they may look

dorky, helmets are must-have protection during a tornado to prevent injuries.”s Wear hard-soled shoes to prevent

injuries if you must walk out of a damaged building.s Create an emergency supply kit that

includes a portable air horn. “If you’re trapped, an air horn will make it easier to alert rescuers to your location.”

“If you live in a mobile home, you absolutely must know what you’re going to do. You can’t stay in a mobile home. They’re a death trap when tornadoes hit,” Spann adds.

If the mention of CrossFit makes you think of elite athletes and grueling workouts, don’t be intimidated.

“Most people imagine the ESPN games when they hear CrossFit. That’s the top 1 percent,” says CrossFit Northridge coach P.J. Dickey. “Our classes involve a wide variety of people like stay-at-home moms, grandparents, high school students and attorneys. The workouts can be modified for anyone’s abilities.”

What is CrossFit?Dickey says it’s the sport of

fitness. The training improves physical well-being in an intense yet supportive environment. Each day’s workout will vary and include movements from an array of exercise regimens, such as running, jumping, weightlifting, gymnastics and rowing. CrossFit aims to build proficiency in general physical areas: cardiovascular endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination and accuracy.

“Ultimately, it can improve the

quality of your life,” he adds.Classes are usually comprised

of:s Warm ups Skill and strength works Workout of the day (WOD)s Cool down and stretching

Demonstration videos and WODs can be found at www.crossfit.com.

What should a beginner expect?

“Many people get their tail kicked for the first week or two. Don’t try to rush it or do too much weight. It’s a competitive class but your personal best is what you should be focused on,” says Dickey.

“A 70-year-old may need to start by using a box to do air squats. With consistent work, they’ll master more difficult moves and lifting weights.”

High-intensity workouts are the goal.

“Individual intensity determines results. Someone using a treadmill for seven minutes may get the same results as someone who’s there for 37

minutes. It’s about how hard you’re working.”

What are the benefits?A group fitness class offers

support and accountability. It’s also an opportunity to make friends. And, there’s something about bonding during a daunting workout, says Dickey.

“Misery really does love company,” he laughs.

According to the coach, the physical and emotional benefits are “unfathomable.”

“You’ll see changes to your body quickly. Within three months, you can have noticeable weight loss and, within six months, you’ll look and feel great. It boosts your self-confidence when you realize you are conquering weaknesses and achieving goals.”

How do you get started?“Walking through the door is

really the hardest part,” Dickey says. “Don’t wait and try to get fit before trying CrossFit, just get started.

“Check your ego at the door and don’t give up. Your ability comes with consistent work and experience. Athletes are surprised when a teenage girl is running circles around them in the class. Well, she’s been working at it and it shows in her ability.”

Dickey’s journey with CrossFit began after his wife joined a class and encouraged him to give it a try.

“I lost 60 pounds, had more energy and felt better. I was hooked.”

To learn more about CrossFit Northridge in Northport, visit www.crossfitnorthridge.net. The introductory Foundations program is $65 for nine classes. A three-month CrossFit contract is $140; six months, $130; and 12 months, $115. The cost includes access to all group fitness classes, amenities and services at Northridge Fitness. Military and student discounts are available.

Depression can be easily mistaken for typical teen behavior. Defiance, angst and other difficult attitudes may seem like moodiness to parents and grandparents. But what if it’s more?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 3 million teens in the United States between the ages of 12-17 experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2015. That’s 12.5 percent of the adolescent population.

Depression takes an emotional, mental and physical toll, and your teen may not understand what’s happening. He may not know how to talk to you about how he feels. If your teen is experiencing any of these behaviors, he may be depressed.s Feelings of sadness,

hopelessness, anxiety and possible indifferences Changes in appetite

(weight loss or gain)s Fatigue or loss of energys Low mood or changes

in moods Withdraws from family

and friendss Irritability, anger or

hostilitys Decreased enjoyment in

previously enjoyed activitiess Physical complaints,

including headaches and stomach pains Lack of motivations Rebellious behavior s Decrease in gradess Difficulty concentratings Preoccupation with death or

dyings Thoughts of suicide or self-harmAccording to Laura Wise Reeves,

LICSW PIP, it’s important to recognize that everyone’s teenage

experience is different, and there are many generational differences between today’s youth and his or her parents and grandparents. Reeves serves as the children’s services manager at Indian Rivers Mental Health Center.

“Teens today have immediate access to information, as well as

instant connections to people and news from around the world through social media. Often, teens interact through social media, such as Facebook, SnapChat and Instagram. The internet allows people to represent or misrepresent their daily life and activities. For example, a teen’s social media post (with some clever hashtag) may display her as nicely dressed with full makeup ready to go out with friends. What

it doesn’t contain is it took her nearly two hours to get ready and her bedroom is in shambles behind her. She may have taken 30 different pictures with various poses to obtain the best background, smile, and overall picture.

“What she shared probably doesn’t include that her parents have been

arguing in the other room or that earlier in school that week she was bullied because she did not have name-brand clothes. Her ‘friends’ may have decided they didn’t want to come pick her up after all, so she had just started washing her face and putting up her clothes. Everyone has a story and the one picture that looks so great online leads others to believe how amazing their life must be and some may begin to compare and compete. Although some posts may result in positive comments and ‘likes,’ it has also been found to lead to cyber-bullying and other negative outcomes. With the constant need for technology driving youth, it seems to decrease their self-esteem, communication skills and positive interactions with others,” Reeves says.

“At times, teenage years can be difficult to navigate. A teen is trying to discover who they are and who they wish to become, all while balancing the pressures of family stress, school, grades, peers, clubs, sports and more. As hormones are changing and teens are continuing to develop, you may notice symptoms. Some changes with mood, appetite, and sleep are ‘normal.’ As a parent or caregiver, it’s important to be

Page 23: Healthy Horizons 1€¦ · through Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Periscope, Pinterest, a blog, the WeatherBrains podcast and more. On Facebook and Twitter combined, he has more than

aware of significant disruptions or abrupt variations in his or her regular behaviors. If symptoms last most days for a period of two weeks or longer, are displayed without an obvious justification for the reaction, or begin to impact his or her daily functioning, it may be best to seek an assessment from a primary care doctor or mental health professional.”

How do I talk to my teen about depression?

Reeves says it is never too early to begin a conversation about positive mental health. Start today by talking about general emotions with your kids and teens. Help them be able to identify feelings beyond happy, sad and angry. There are so many different emotions people may struggle to explain, including disappointment, embarrassment, frustration, anxiety and confusion.

“You don’t need to wait until you have concerns before having a discussion about mental health. We recommend talking with children of any age about emotions and healthy coping skills. It’s also important when we aren’t talking to our children to model healthy, appropriate behaviors. Be the example you wish your children to follow.”

Prior to starting this conversation, mentally prepare yourself. You will need to be patient, respectful and understanding. You will want to create a supportive, loving environment with minimal distractions. Your teen may share information you might not want to hear. Your responses will set the stage for future conversations based your ability to listen, be supportive and not overreact. s Begin the discussion by

expressing your concern. s Ask questions about current

stressors and how your teen is feeling.

s Listen to their answers. s Be supportive and offer help or

encourage them speak to someone who might be able to help, such as a mental health provider or primary care doctor.

If you need help having this conversation, there are therapists at Indian Rivers and other agencies who can assist you.

How can I be supportive if my teen is depressed?

Listen; don’t blame. Offer choices and options for treatment. Express understanding and concern for the wellbeing of your teen and encourage appropriate help. Explain depression is not caused by the actions of the individual. It is okay to ask and accept help. While long-term treatment may be needed for some, some depressive episodes may be treated within a few months. There are a variety of treatments available, including counseling and medication therapy.

While depression is a chemical imbalance of hormones in the brain, there are factors in our environment playing a role in the way we process stress and manage our emotions.

“I would encourage everyone to monitor their time spent on social media or looking at the television, computer, or phone screen, not

just our teens — everyone. If we are constantly focused on texting, ‘liking’ and ‘sharing,’ we are not present in the world around us. We are not having real conversations with real people. We are missing the chance to connect with our family and friends. The lack of interactions with others may lead to increased feelings of isolation and loneliness,” says Reeves.

“Encourage enough sleep, around 8 hours. It is incredible the number of adolescents we see at Indian Rivers with sleep difficulty. However, once you start asking questions about their sleep routine, you may discover they are playing video games, watching TV or using social media while trying to fall asleep. Most are not able to fall asleep, while actively engaging their brain in another activity.

“Work with your teen on creating a sleep routine to assist in getting a full night’s rest,” adds Reeves. “It is recommended electronics be stopped a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes prior to bedtime.”

You should also:s Encourage your teen to avoid

drugs and alcohol. s Role-play good responses your

teen may use if offered drugs or alcohol. s Create a secret password or

code your teen can text you or say on the phone should they get in an uncomfortable situation with friends and need your help to pick them up or give them an excuse to leave. s Promote a healthy diet and

physical activity. Proper nutrition and exercise play a vital role in positive mental health. You could use these times to eat together, go on walks and interact with your teen.

thoughts of suicide or self-harm. A mental health professionalmight be helpful if

symptoms worsen or you notice impairments in

the overall daily functioning of the teen.

Drink water. Skip all the sugar and empty calories. Make water your default

drink and drink plenty of it. Staying hydrated

increases energy.

Get plenty of sleep. A reasonable bedtime is important for the

whole family. Not getting enough sleep leads to fatigue, inability to

concentrate, fighting and tantrums.

Whether it’s growing vegetables, raising chickens

or keeping honey bees, a little self-reliance in your food chain will teach your kids the value of hard work and give

them gratitude.

Get some sunshine and fresh air every day. Even in cold weather

you should bundle up and take a walk around the block or sit and

sip hot cocoa on your porch. From improved concentration to faster healing, spending time outside

has been shown to have numerous health benefits.

Limit TV and video game time. Encourage family members

to spend time using their imagination or working on

and accomplishing a project. Accomplishing big goals or

even small tasks leads to better physical and mental health and

increased self-esteem.

Make your meals fresh and cut down on eating out. Your family will consume less calories in a homemade meal. Dinner around the table is also a great time to strengthen family bonds.

Exercise to promote a healthy family culture. If you take a walk, bike ride or hike together, your kids are more likely to continue those activities into adulthood. Make these activities family traditions and include them in your vacations. You’ll make great memories along the way.-familyshare.com

Many people experience mental health concerns from time to time. Your mental health can be affected by a variety of factors, including stress, genetics, and brain chemistry. There’s no sure way to prevent mental illness. However, taking steps to control stress, to increase your resilience, and to boost low self-esteem may help keep your symptoms under control. According to the experts at the Mayo Clinic, you should:

Avoid alcohol and drug use. Using alcohol or recreational drugs can make it difficult to treat a mental illness. If you’re addicted, quitting can be a real challenge. If you can’t quit on your own, see your doctor or find a support group to help you.

Stay active. Exercise can help you manage symptoms of depression, stress and anxiety. Physical activity can also counteract the effects of some psychiatric medications that may cause weight gain. Consider walking, swimming, gardening or any form of physical activity that you enjoy. Even light physical activity can make a difference.

Determine priorities. You may reduce the impact of your mental concerns by managing time and energy. Cut back on obligations when necessary and set reasonable goals. Give yourself permission to do less when symptoms are worse. You may find it helpful to make a list of daily tasks or use a planner to structure your time and stay organized.

Learn to adopt a positive attitude. Focusing on the positive things in your life can make your life better and may even improve your health. Try to accept changes when they occur and keep problems

in perspective. Stress management techniques, including relaxation methods, may help.

Stay connected with friends and family. Try to participate in social activities and get together with family or friends regularly. Ask for help when you need it and be upfront with your loved ones about how you’re doing. Keep a journal. Keeping track of your personal life can help you and your mental health provider identify what triggers or improves your symptoms. It’s also a healthy way to explore and express pain, anger, fear and other emotions.

A mental health concern becomes a mental illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent

stress and affect your ability to function. A mental health provider, such as a psychiatrist or counselor, can work with you to create a treatment plan which may include medication and therapy.

If you or a loved one is experiencing mental concerns, you’re not alone. Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. - 43.8 million, or 18.5 percent - experiences mental illness in a given year, per the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

At North Harbor Pavilion, our team of professionals wants to help you on your path to healing. We provide 24-hour acute treatment care for patients ages 18 and older, with a specialized program to meet the unique needs of older adults. Recognized throughout West Alabama, Cardiology Consultants has provided a comprehensive range of cardiovascular medical services for over three decades. In 1973, Dr. William A. Hill began practicing medicine with a prominent group of internists as Tuscaloosa’s only cardiologist. By 1981, Dr. Hill founded Cardiology Consultants, P.C. staffed with five dedicated employees and the objective of bringing the highest quality, state-of-the-art cardiovascular services to West Alabama.

Today, Cardiology Consultants, PC has grown from a 1,500 square foot office on Anna Avenue in 1981 to a 14,000 square foot office in the DCH Medical Tower in 1991. They now employ a staff of more than 50, including seven cardiologists and three nurse practitioners. They began providing services to satellite clinics over two decades ago and now serve residents in nine counties throughout West Alabama and Alabama’s Black Belt.

Cardiology Consultants’ practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of heart and blood vessel related diseases. Some of these include: coronary artery disease, hypertension, abnormal lipids, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and peripheral vascular disease (PVD). They provide cardiovascular care in consultation with your primary care physician.

The professional staff at Cardiology

Consultants, P.C. includes Board Certified Cardiologists: William A. Hill, Jr. MD, FACC; John A. Mantle, MD, FACC; Jeffrey K. Anderson, MD, FACC; L. Anne Lewis, MD, FACC; Amit K. Shah, MD, FACC; Dr. Ed Carraway, MD, FACC and Dr. Bradley Proctor, MD, FACC.

The additional professional staff includes: certified RN practitioners, RNs, LPNs, registered radiologic technologists, registered diagnostic cardiac sonographers, and registered vascular technologists. The vascular, nuclear and echo labs are accredited. Accreditation provides peer recognition of the high standards set for the quality of noninvasive testing being performed in the respective testing areas.

Their support staff work with the physicians and staff to ensure exceptional delivery of health care and other services to patients, families and the communities.

Despite Cardiology Consultants’ modest beginnings, their physicians provide an accumulative century of experience. The initial goal has not changed since 1981: to continue to grow with the community and offer the most up-to-date cardiology services possible with a personal and caring touch.

HOWA:Ablessingfor West Alabama families

Terry Waters always knew Hospice of West Alabama was a good organization. Good enough that he’s spent nearly 12 years on the Board of Directors. Good enough that he chaired the Capital Campaign for the construction of the Tuscaloosa in-patient facility.

But it wasn’t until Terry had two close family members in the Tuscaloosa facility, that he truly appreciated and saw first hand just what HOWA does for the community.

“Both my mother-in-law and my sister spent their final days at hospice free of pain, in peace and in dignity. What a blessing for them and us!” Terry said.

“I saw it from a very real and personal perspective the love and caring that they provide.”

Terry’s mother-in-law, who lived in rural Southwest Alabama at the time, was moved to Tuscaloosa when she became terminal because his wife and her brother knew it would be difficult to help her during her final days being so far away. Also, finding hospice care would be complicated because of the rural setting.

His sister, who lived in East Tennessee, had a similar problem - finding the required hospice care she needed. Her final care was more difficult in that her care provider wasn’t able to get her pain under control.

“At HOWA, they worked aggressively to get her pain under control,” Terry said. “She was nearly at crisis level. She was able to spend her final days in peace and relatively pain free.

“In less than two months, I had two family members who were served by ‘angels’,” he said gratefully.

“We were blessed, thankful and comforted that the angels were here to serve my family and I.”

utomobile crashes are the number

one killer of teenagers and the number

one cause of disabling injuries for teens. Sadly, many of these accidents are preventable.

Leslie Brown is the coordinator of Alabama Safe Kids at Children’s of Alabama. She said parents play an important role in encouraging their children to be safe as a driver and a passenger. “Parents can start by talking to their child when in elementary school about being a safe passenger,” Brown said. “Things like modeling safe behavior, wearing a seatbelt every time and putting the cell phone down. They’re going to do what we do.”

In Alabama, the Graduated Driver License Law is a mandatory restriction in place for inexperienced drivers. One of the

requirements is that a new driver may not have more than one non-family passenger in the vehicle with them other than the parent, guardian or a supervising licensed driver at least 21 years of age.

Brown said parents should become familiar with the Graduated Driver License Law and download a Teen Driving Agreement for their new driver to sign. This helps to establish important ground rules to keep the new driver safe. And Brown says, if the teen violates any of these rules there should be consequences. “Take away keys when they don’t follow rules,” she said. “You can also offer rewards when they do make good choices.” Brown said it’s important teens and adults do these three things:s Obey the laws Wear a seatbelts Put down the cell phoneBrown has teenagers of her own,

so talking about safe driving isn’t just part of her job description, it’s personal. “I always say to my teenagers, ‘Are you a great friend or a good friend?’” she said. “I tell them, ‘Encourage your friends to wear their seatbelts. Ask, ‘Can I send that text for you?’ instead of allowing them to text and drive.”

Getting a new driver’s license is an exciting time for a teenager. By helping them to know the law and apply safe driving practices, parents can play an important role in keeping their teens alive.

Children’s of Alabama offers links to the Graduated Driver License Law, the Teen Driving Agreement and more resources for parents and teens. Go to www.childrensal.org/Safe-Teen-Driving-Toolkit to access.

This has been the philosophy at Caring Days since the planning stages. Dr. Charlie Durham, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, recognized that the West Alabama community lacked services for adults with memory disorders. There were nursing homes and assisted living facilities but many people were not at a point where they needed residential care. There was a need for a program that bridged the gap between independent living and highly restricted care. First Presbyterian invited other local congregations to work with them to establish an adult day care. In 1997, after months of planning and preparation, five of those congregations successfully opened Caring Days Adult Day Care.

From a little seed money, a lot

of planning, and an enormous amount of faith, a program developed that is now nationally recognized. Adults with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Picks, Huntington’s, brain tumors, stroke, alcoholism related, and trauma induced memory disorders have a safe and happy environment in which they spend their days. Most adult day cares serve individuals in the early stages and the beginning of the middle stages. Caring Days cares for individuals through the entire process. In that families only pay half of what it costs to provide the program, it is hard to imagine that the center just celebrated its 20th birthday. In those 20 years, well over half a million hours of specialized care have been provided in the West Alabama area. Our community believed in our

program and supported our efforts. They thought we could, so we did.

Comfort Care Hospice is an Alabama based hospice company serving 58 of the 67 counties in Alabama. We are owned by health care providers rather than a group of investors. Our owners live in Alabama, understand healthcare, and have a desire to provide the best care available to patients who are facing a terminal diagnosis- to their neighbors, friends and others who could greatly benefit from the care and support that only hospice can provide.

We opened Tuscaloosa in February of 2015 so we could better

serve residents of Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas (we had been proudly serving Tuscaloosa from our office in Pelham since October of 2003). Our staff are local residents of Tuscaloosa County. Comfort Care Hospice emphasizes and understands the importance of a timely response to patient and family needs, and we make it a priority to have an office in all of our major coverage areas. Our goal is to be within 50 minutes to an hour from our patients and families to better support and respond to the needs of dying patients. We

want to be nearby when we are needed the most. Comfort Care Hospice clinical teams are held to high standards in providing our patients, families, and caregivers with exceptional home based hospice care. We believe that all patients and caregivers should use their voice in choosing a hospice provider. One’s last days should be as meaningful as the rest- a special time that is shared with loved ones, intimate friends and committed caregivers. Choosing hospice care is not giving up, it is simply choosing to focus on quality of life.
