Training of Community Health Workers in PNGCHWs are trained for 2 years in English at over 20 training schools around the country by various church health groups. There is a standard curriculum now for the country with training modules written in consultation with Health Department headquarters staff.

These modules constantly refer to the text book: “Health Care Manual for Community Health Workers in PNG” by Dr. Clifford Smith.This book was first published in 1986 with illustrations by Judith Smith. Cliff and Judy completely re-wrote and published an 800 A4 page second edition in 1996

with 1000 illustrations. This edition is now well out of date and urgently needs redevelopment.

HSA has received a number of requests for help in the redevelopment of the Health Care Manual from health project leaders, a publisher, church health workers, and denominational church leaders in PNG. Some key figures among church aid agencies believe that the redevelopment is certainly achievable and that HSA could well coordinate the redevelopment of this text book. The total cost for such a manual is estimated at being between $1.5 and $2million.

It is anticipated that the redevelopment of the manual will be done mainly by Papua New Guineans, with input from a number of external consultants, and will require a feasibility study to decide how best this can be achieved.HSA has agreed to initiate this study in consultation

Papua New Guinea (PNG), our nearest neighbor, is a country with great diversity. There are more languages and tribal groups in its mountainous spine, swampy coastal regions and scattered islands than any other country in the world. Of its 6 million people, 80% live in rural areas where access to most medical facilities is limited. Community health therefore needs to play a most important role in the overall health programme.

Community Health Workers (CHWs) in PNGCHWs work in very scattered locations, being the first line of health care for populations of 500-1500. They act like local GPs, treating those with common illnesses such as malaria, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, providing first aid, health education and basic maternal and child health and referring complicated problems to health centres with more skilled health workers

The churches in PNG perform 80% of all rural health work, and 100% of the training of the basic health care workers there who are called “Community Health Workers” or CHWs
