On our many travels we’ve experienced for ourselves the effects that polluted air and the massive build-up of heat in metropolitan regions have on the lives of city residents. Even if the issue of polluted air is not obvious to the same extent everywhere, it’s real

and it’s global. We've decided to do something about it. Thanks to our combined expertise we’ve been able to bring together the natural abilities of mosses and cutting-edge Internet of Things technology in order to develop the world’s first bio-tech filter to quantifiably improve air quality – the CityTree. With the CityTree we want to make a significant contribution to giving people in cities all over the world cleaner air to breathe in the long term.

Living healthily with every breath

We need sustainable soluti ons for a bett er quality of life.

Sadly polluted air is a worldwide problem. Even if it's more obvious in some places than in others, it’s a real threat. By the year 2050, about 80% of all people will live in cities. All of them will be particularly affected by air polluted by particulate matter and nitrogen oxides.

Up to now however, despite worrying statistics, there have been no convincing solutions that promise a sustainable change to the current situation. With the CityTree we have developed the world’s first bio-tech filter to quantifiably improve air quality, which measurably filters city air and cleanses it of pollutants. The CityTree is an independent system that integrates seamlessly into any urban landscape.

It therefore makes urban living areas into more attractive locations – with cleaner air.

For a healthier future in cities.

The ability of certain moss cultures to fi lter pollutants such as parti culate matt er and nitrogen oxides from the air makes them ideal natural air purifi ers. But in citi es, where air purifi cati on is a great challenge, mosses are barely able to survive due to their need for water and shade.

This problem can be solved by connecting different mosses with fully automated water and nutrient provision based on unique IoT technology. Air fi ltering performance is quanti tati vely proven and the plants’ requirements are measured in real time. That’s how the CityTree came into being – the world's first bio-tech filter to quantifiably improve air quality.

Location analysis– for an optimum effect

Impact simulation in the urban living environmentwith the help of a microclimate model.

Image: Model area

Urban living spaces are increasingly exposed to environmental pollution. Motivated by the desire to make a valuable contribution to sustainably favourable living conditions in cites, the company ENVI_MET has developed particularly advanced simulation techniques. Based on microclimate models, the software rests on a foundation of scientifically-recognised methods and the approach of viewing the environment as a holistic organism. With the help of the software, sustainably effective measures to reduce environmental pollution can be visualised quantitatively with regard to their impact, and then evaluated.

3D modelling Simulation

One of the world’s leadingsoft ware applicati ons for microclimate simulati ons from ENV_MET® saves data from various sources on the local climati c, structural and geometrical conditi ons in preparati on for the next step (complex simulati on calculati ons).

The huge amounts of data are processed in order to determine the opti mum locati on for each individual CityTree – with the results also being presented visually – as well as to calculate its cumulated eff ect on the reducti on of air polluti on in the secti on of urban living space being studied (for example a street).

In additi on, local environmental factors such as the meteoro- logical situati on and the degree of air polluti on are used as a basis for lengthy simulati on calculati ons, so that their meaning with regard to the future impact of the CityTree can be visualised.

Finally, the results of these micro- climate simulati ons are summarised in a report and presented together with corresponding recommen-dati ons. In this way, subsequent decisions regarding the imple- mentati on of CityTrees in a par- ti cular urban living space are based on a solid foundati on of informati on.

For more clean air: By activating the ventilation system already in place in the construction, airflow can be increased. The CityTree therefore becomes independent of the natural wind flow that can be very different from locati on to locati on. The amount of air fl owing through can be controlled individually, to suit the respecti veair polluti on situati on or also within predefi ned periods of ti me during a day. The CityTree’s air fi lter performance is considerably increased – as is, therefore, the positi ve eff ect on the environment in the form of a larger amount of clean air.

CleanAir+ – for more clean air

AirCare – for proven environmental performance

Constantly available data on product-specific performance and status on the environment around the CityTree.

For proven environmental performance: The CityTree contains a unique IoT technology infrastructure that includes numerous points of measurement. The integrated sensors generate huge amounts of data in real time, which can be viewed using a specially developed dashboard. The data provides comprehensive information about the environmental performance and the status of the CityTree. Information on the environmental situation is also available. Therefore, the environmental performance of an individual – or of several – CityTrees can be quanti tati vely demonstrated at any ti me. In additi on, opti mum maintenance and care are guaranteed, which ensures that the CityTree remains functional and has a long life.

ParisIn the summer of 2016, on the occasion of

“VivaTech”, one of Europe's biggest technology events, the city of Paris and IT company Cisco introduced the CityTree to the French capital. As a result of the great public interest, three CityTrees were installed at Place de la Nation

DresdenAs part of a scientific exhibition, the international science and culture association DRESDEN- concept installed CityTrees in front of participating institutions in Dresden and at King’s College in London. As an innovative solution for cleaner air, they received wide media interest.

AmsterdamBy implementing innovative solutions, the city of Amsterdam is actively rising to the challenges of constantly increasing environmental pollution. In a very traffic-heavy street in the centre, the city administration is planning to review the CityTree’s environmental performance as part of a comprehensive test.

The CityTree is an intelligent air filter, an innovative communication space and an economic sustainability measure, all in one. The range of benefits that the CityTree offers are only matched by the number of ways it can be put to use.

The CityTree can be tailored to the individual requirements of cities, companies or the property sector. The added value is always the same: a considerable improvement in quality of life. And that is already benefiting cities that have integrated the CityTree into their urban landscape as an air purification measure: London, Paris, Hong Kong, Brussels, Glasgow, Oslo, Amsterdam, Modena, Berlin, Essen and Dresden. Well-known companies such as Deutsche Bahn, Cisco and ECE are just as impressed by the CityTree.

Innovative solution in the property sector

Promoting the reduction of air pollutants: ECE Project Management in Hamburg.

The first CityTree in the Hamburg metropolitan area was installed by ECE Project Management. As a specialist in commercial property, ECE is a one-stop provider of all services to do with property. By bundling their entire know-how they create clear added value for their customers, partners and clients.

The topic of air pollutants in metropolitan areas is one to which politics, business and consumers must each contribute in equal measure. As a responsible, sustainably-oriented company also represented by its property locations in many cities and metropolitan areas, ECE would like to promote and support innovative solutions for the reduction of air pollutants. With the CityTree, the company is beginning a new sustainability project that contributes to air purification. ECE is therefore the first company in Northern Germany to test this innovative concept at its own location, in order to gather experience and to extend the model to possible additional locations.
