Our traditions go back as far as 1785 and today we are one of the central medical establishments in Tallinn, offering services based on the newest discoveries in science and technical innovation. Many of our doctors are acknowledged in the entire Northern-Europe and it is not considered to be too much to take a longer trip in order to meet them.

East-Tallinn Central Hospital has over 2400 employees and 630 hospital beds. Here are just a few statistical numbers – in 2014 we had 557 506 doctor’s appointments, we performed 25 903 surgeries, delivered 3798 births and made 45 cornea transplant surgeries. At our Central Laboratory we use methodology and equipment compliant with modern laboratory medicine.

Since 2007, our Central Laboratory is accredited with international ISO 15189 standard certificate. A distinctive feature of the Central Laboratory is the wide range of tests available for autoimmune disease analysis. In addition to our own hospital, we perform analysis for family and private doctors, and for patients who wish to order some laboratory tests themselves.

At the Center of Radiology we do tests from urogram to heart MRI and perform soft tissue and bone puncture and biopsy under the surveillance of diagnostic imaging. We help everyone from our own hospital neonates to family doctor’s patients with getting an accurate diagnosis. Our youthful and cooperative doctors and technicians are well-trained in using the possibilities that modern equipment offers.

Our Department of Angiography offers the diagnostics and treatment for cardiac, extremeties and brain vascular diseases. Peripheral heart and brain angioplasty and vascular stentig are performed through the femoral, radial or crural artery. We were the first in Estonia to perform surgeries for closing foramen

ovale through vascular system. We were also the first ones in the Baltic States to perform renal artery denervation procedure in patients with resistant hypertension.

At the Center of Nuclear Medicine we use radioactive isotopes for diagnostics and treatment. Accurate diagnostics is possible due to modern integrated high technology equipment: single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT/CT) and positron emission tomography – computed tomography (PET/CT). Our treatments include radioiodine therapy for thyroid diseases and peptide-receptor radiotherapy for neuroendocrine tumors. Services of the Center are being used both by Estonian and foreign medical establishments.

Using microscope to examine punctures or surgical materials the Center of Pathology assesses cellular and tissue related changes and uses various methods to diagnose tumors and other diseases. The Center of Pathology also performs autopsies for other medical establishments where there are non-existent or limited resources.

PET/CT investigation in mobile unit

This is a diagnostic investigation where it is possible to find the original focus of malignant disease, determine the extent of the spread of a disease and assess treatment response with positron emission tomography/computer tomography (PET/CT). The investigation is also indicated in case of suspicion of tumour recurrence.

Radioiodine treatment procedure for thyroid cancer

Radioiodine therapy is used for follow-up treatment of patients with thyroid cancer after complete surgical removal of the thyroid gland. After the administration of a radioiodine capsule the patient has to stay for 4-5 days in the isolated treatment ward in the Nuclear Medicine Centre.

Radioiodine therapy for thyrotoxicosis

Radioiodine treatment of hyperthyroidism is performed as outpatient treatment. The patient will be issued an information leaflet with radiation safety requirements.

Thyroid scintigraphy with iodine uptake test

The investigations will be used for combined assessment of hyperthyroidism and for the planning of radioiodine therapy if required. When performing an iodine uptake test it should be taken into account that this is a two-day test – on the first day the patient swallows a test capsule of radioiodine; on the second day the (after 24 hours) the level of iodine absorption in thyroid tissue is measured.

Planning of nuclear medicine investigation or treatment procedure

The service includes the analysis of the indications of the investigation or treatment procedure, calculation of radiation risk, choice of methodology (issuing discharge summary in foreign language).

Static skeletal scintigraphy or whole body scintigraphy with iodine

The investigation is performed for assessment of the spread of malignant disease to the bones or the assessment of the efficacy of the radioiodine treatment.

Scintigraphy of pheochromocytoma or adrenergic tissue or medullary thyroid cancer

The investigation is performed to discover the named tumours, to assess their spread and in case of suspicion of tumour recurrences.

Scintigraphy of somatostatin receptors

The investigation is performed to discover neuroendocrine tumours (including carcinoid), to assess their spread and in case of suspicion of recurrences.

Isotope therapy of neuroendocrine tumour (1 treatment procedure)

This is a peptide receptor-radiotherapy of neuroendocrine tumours. The patient will be hospitalised to the treatment ward of the Nuclear Medicine Centre for one day for the preparation and performance of the treatment procedure.

Diagnostics of anaemia The investigation helps to understand the causes of the problem and to find the right treatment in case of anaemia.

Diagnostics of thyroid diseases

The symptoms of thyroid disease may be tremor, nervousness and increased sweating or constant tiredness and increase of body weight.

Diagnostics of pulmonary infections

Tiredness and mild cough that has lasted for long time may indicate chronic pulmonary infection.

Diagnostics of liver diseases Yellowness of eyes and pale stools may indicate liver disease. The investigation is suitable also when you wish to check your analyses in case of known liver disease. In such case you should know your previous investigation results. The markers of viral hepatitis may be ordered as additional investigations if there is a reason to suspect B or C hepatitis.

Diagnostics of renal diseases

Frequent and painful urination, back pain and swelling around eyes may indicate renal and urinary tract diseases. We recommend checking renal function regularly if you have diabetes or hypertension.

Diagnostics of Lyme disease Circular red skin rash, fever, headache, joint and muscle pain may indicate Lyme disease. The analysis should advisably be prescribed 4-6 weeks after the tick-bite.

Diagnostics of inflammation Allows for the presence of inflammation to be determined if you are worried about it.

Diagnostics and monitoring of diabetes

Such disease signs as plentiful drinking and frequent urination may indicate diabetes. Occurrence of diabetes in family is also a risk factor.

Assessment of risk of cardiovascular diseases

These investigations help to discover the disorders of cholesterol metabolism that have a damaging effect on blood vessels. If you have breathlessness and palpitations with unknown cause already during light physical exertion, a heart failure marker investigation could be prescribed additionally.

Services of the Diagnostics Clinic

The Diagnostics Clinic offers all provided services for a fee. Some services have a special fee. Most of the services are provided on the basis of the price list of the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. Taking into account the complexity of the investigations and their possible risk factors the diagnostic investigations as a rule are performed by the prescription of a healthcare worker on the basis of a referral.

Surgery Clinic

Operating halls are equipped with up-to-date technology, they are safe, sterile and offer modern IT solutions, which all help to achieve the best possible treatment. Our Clinic has been in the lead of endocrine surgeries for many years in Estonia. In recent years our partners have given special recognition to our spine and vascular surgery units. Our Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care is meant for treating patients who are severely ill. Throughout the year, the doctors and nurses in this department perform approximately 16 000 anesthesia and treat 300-400 patients in intensive care, most of them need a respirator. The whole team works nonstop to guarantee the safety of anesthesia and to nurse severely ill patients back to life. Our anesthetists run a Pain Management Center and give advice to all clinical departments on pain treatment.

Ear-Nose-Throat (Otolaryngology) Center offers diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation services. In the Surgical Department we cure ear-nose-throat disorders through surgical methods and perform hearing implant surgeries. There are also Hearing and Vocal Disorders treatment subunits at the Center’s Outpatient Clinic.

Our Department of Urology is one of the oldest and largest in Estonia, specializing among other areas in treating malignant tumors and urinary stone disease and in urodynamic investigations.

Center of General and Oncological Surgery specializes in the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal tract, skin and soft tissues, breast, abdominal wall, cardiovascular system and malignant tumor and in bariatric surgery. Surgery has been an important treatment method throughout the long history of the East-Tallinn Central Hospital. Today’s Surgery Clinic was established in January 1995 combining departments with a surgical section. Thanks to our long-time experience and patients’ reliability towards us we have a substantial workload.

East-Tallinn Central Hospital’s Orthopedic Department encompasses all of the traumatologist-orthopedic area. Our orthopedists and orthopedic nurses are waiting for you for a consultation visit. At inpatient unit we perform large-scale treatment procedures and surgeries. In addition to specific surgeries we are active in rehabilitation and give prosthesis consultations.

Audiometry nurse’s consultation

Audiometry nurse performs routine investigations of hearing and rehabilitation of hearing impairment.

Voice therapist’s consultation

Voice specialist advises professional and amateur singers in case of voice disorders, explains the need for voice hygiene and consults about the use of voice techniques. The voice specialist will also consult non-singers if needed.

Sclerotherapy Sclerotherapy is a procedure correcting small subcutaneous or intracutaneous varicose veins, during which a sclerosing substance is injected into the blood vessel with a fine needle.

Operations

Laparoscopic gallbladder operation

The operation comprises the removal of diseased gallbladder (in case of cholelithiasis with stones). The advantages of the laparoscopic operation are smaller wounds and shorter recovery period.

Laparoscopic operation of umbilical, inguinal or femoral hernia

Laparoscopic operation of other abdominal wall hernia

Operation of umbilical, inguinal or femoral hernia

Operation of other abdominal wall hernia

Hernias are one of the most frequent surgical pathologies. The disease is a protrusion of peritoneum through abdominal wall. The only treatment method is surgical. During the operation the opening of the hernia is closed with sutures or a mesh made of artificial material. This is also called “tension-free” hernioplasty.

Bariatric operations Bariatric operations are effective in the treatment of obesity when different weight reduction methods have not yielded any results. Bariatric surgery is indicated starting from body mass index (BMI) 40 or in case of concurrent diseases (diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea) starting from BMI of 35. Most bariatric operations are performed laparoscopically.

Skin and subcutaneous tissue correcting operations

This operation is indicated after extensive weight loss after which loose skin and fat folds develop in different body regions (arms, back, abdomen, thighs, breasts). The correcting operation due to aesthetical and also medical indications (intertrigo) consists of the removal of excess skin and subcutaneous tissue. This is often needed after bariatric surgery.

Operations

Varicectomy without saphenectomy

For the correction of superficial venous system reflux disease it is possible to remove the dilated (diseased) varices with the vein main stem or without. The required operation method depends on specific pathology.

Varicectomy with saphenectomy

Arthroscopic operation (meniscus, resection, free body)

The operation is indicated for the diagnosis and treatment of intra-articular problems.

Arthroscopic operation (except meniscus, resection, free body)

During arthroscopy the orthopaedist makes small skin incisions in the operated region and inserts an optical instrument with 2-5 mm diameter into the joint that allows seeing into the joint.

Reconstruction of joint ligaments with arthroscopic or miniarthrotomy method

Urethropexy (correction of urinary incontinence)

The operation is usually performed with an injection into the back. The patient stays at the hospital for one day, a bladder catheter is placed after the surgery that will be removed on the next day before going home.

Dorsal incision (incision of prepuce)

The operation is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia.

TUR resection of prostate Spinal anaesthesia (injection into the back) is used during the surgery when the anaesthetic is injected with a needle into the cerebrospinal fluid in the lumbar region. The patient stays in the hospital for 3-5 days.

Removal of tonsils Removal of inflammatory or enlarged tonsils is performed in general or local anaesthesia.

Removal of adenoids The adenoid removal operation usually takes place in day surgery in general narcosis.

Septoplasty This is a plastic surgery of nasal septum.

Nursing bed-day Nursing consists of 24-hour doctor’s care, the service of nurses and care takers and smaller treatments.

Suffering a severe illness or trauma can leave injuries and full recovery is not always possible. Nursing Clinic offers

Women’s Clinic

You will find with us the most modern medical technology available and can get help from competent and experienced doctors, nurses and midwives with gynecological examinations, disease prevention, childbirth or infertility treatment. Women in all ages are welcome here.

We have the oldest maternity hospital in Estonia. In 2014 we celebrated its 210th anniversary. Many of our patients are bound in a long-time tradition and generation continuity – the people who come to give birth today are already the third generation as their mothers and grandmothers gave birth here as well. In addition to being the oldest, we are also the largest clinic to offer obstetrics – one quarter of all children in Estonia are born here.

We are the only hospital in Estonia honored with UNISEF Baby-Friendly Hospital title.

The quality of our clinical work is on the same level as it is in Finland – a country that is at the head of maternity care in Europe.

Midwife’s consultation The first visit to midwife on week 7-9 of pregnancy, recommendably before week 12 of pregnancy.

Thorough investigation of infertility during gynaecologist’s consultation to determine the cause of infertility problems and to find a suitable treatment method. You can come to the consultation without a referral.

Andrologist's consultation Thorough investigation of infertility during andrologist’s consultation to determine the cause of infertility and to find a suitable treatment method. You can come to the consultation with family doctor’s or specialist’s referral.

Counselling about infertility treatment

The midwife explains the essence of different infertility treatment methods, gives recommendations for coping before and after infertility treatment procedures.You can come to the consultation without a referral.

Midwife’s consultation for women requiring infertility treatment

The midwife introduces the required analyses to the woman starting infertility treatment, takes gynaecological samples and issues referrals for blood tests. The gynaecologist performing the infertility treatment refers to the consultation.

Investigations

Ultrasound investigation on the request of pregnant woman with a 3D device with saving the image on DVD

Ultrasound investigation is performed by your request without medical indication. The best time for the investigation is between weeks 24-32 of pregnancy as there is sufficient amount of amniotic fluid in the uterine cavity and the child isn’t located in the pelvis any more. At the end of the investigation you will get a DVD with the recording.

Infertility treatment

Services of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) for women with the insurance of the Estonian Health Insurance Fund and up to 40 years old

Complex price of in vitro fertilisation (1* and 2*)

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is the most effective infertility treatment method.

1* Puncture of ovaries Collection of mature ova from the ovaries and in vitro fertilisation.

2* Transplantation, freezing and storing of embryo, 60 days (from the day of freezing)

Growing and insertion into the uterus of embryos developed from fertilised ova. The unused embryos are frozen if the patient wishes. Starting from the 61st day (from the day of freezing) the service is for fee. Freezing means the storage of embryos at very low temperatures for further use.

Transplantation of frozen embryo(s)

Thawing, assessment of development potential and introduction into the uterus of embryos unused during the previous treatment cycle and stored at very low temperatures.

Growing embryos to blastocyst stage

The embryo develops into blastocyst stage (i.e. about 5-6 days) before introduction into the uterus.

The use of donor spermatozoa for in vitro fertilisation

In case of severe sperm pathology it is possible to use donor spermatozoa. There is a wide selection of sperm donors in our centre.

Freezing and storing of gametes in liquid nitrogen for up to 6 months

To maintain fertility it is possible to freeze spermatozoa and ova. The possibility of bearing a child is maintained for months and years. Freezing means storing ova or spermatozoa at very low temperatures for further use.

Storing frozen embryos and gametes (starting from the third month)

To maintain fertility it is possible to freeze embryos, spermatozoa and ova. Frozen gametes and embryos can be stored for up to 7 years.

The internationally acknowledged oculists at the Eye Clinic of East-Tallinn Central Hospital, treat eye diseases and traumas of patients in every age. In addition to the aforementioned, we also have specialists offering services in allergology, skin diseases, psychiatry and occupational health care. Many of our units are among the best in Northern Estonia, some the only specialized units in Estonia. We offer outpatient appointments as well as inpatient treatment. Quick and comfortable day care treatments ensure that patients don't have to stay in the hospital overnight. We have established day care opportunity in all of our units and the range of our services is constantly expanding.

We offer Complete Health Checkups for persons who value their time and health, you will get an overview of your current condition and a treatment plan if necessary.

Our Clinic of Internal Medicine uses the newest methodology for tests and treatments. We have opened the first Thrombosis Consultation Office in Estonia. We were the first in the Baltic States to apply a new effective treatment method called renal artery denervation procedure in patients with resistant hypertension.

Since 2006 we use biological therapy, which has been a breakthrough in treating rheumatic diseases.

Our Center of Gastroenterology is the largest in Estonia, offering inpatient, outpatient and day care

services. Since 2007, we perform colonoscopy and gastroscopy under propofol narcosis. When it comes to treating gastrointestinal tract diseases, the doctors at our Center of Gastroenterology use all treatment and test methods available, including endoscopic ultrasound and enteroscopy. We were the first clinic in the Baltic States to perform the latter. For inflammatory bowel diseases we use biological therapy. Patients with severe liver diseases and inflammatory bowel diseases are under our observational care. Our Clinic of Internal Medicine has all possibilities for specifying neurological pathology. In addition to that we are the only ones in Estonia to use ultrasound diagnostics for Parkinson’s disease.

We have doctors at our Center of Endocrinology who are specialized in endocrine disorders during pregnancy and gynecological endocrinology.

In our Oncology Center we use modern approach to cancer treatment. Chemotherapy is performed in a way that is best suited for the patient – in stationary or ambulatory care.

Electrocardiography with computer analysis

Gives information about heart rate and different arrhythmias.

Electrocardiography exercise tolerance test

During the exercise tolerance test ECG is registered, blood pressure is measured, your general status and possible emerging complaints are monitored. The investigation is performed on treadmill or bicycle.

Echocardiography Heart measurements, status of heart valves, direction and speed of blood flow in different parts of the heart and the pumping function of the heart are evaluated with echocardiography.

Holter monitoring 24-hour registration of heart rhythm with portable device during your everyday activities.

Blood pressure monitoring 24-hour registration of blood pressure makes it possible to discover concealed hypertension, to elaborate its degree of severity, to prescribe treatment and check its efficacy.

Gastroscopy Gastroscopy is internal inspection (endoscopy) of oesophagus, stomach and beginning part of duodenum.

Colonoscopy Colonoscopy deals with internal inspection (endoscopy) of gastrointestinal tract.

Digital dermatoscopy The investigation helps to evaluate birthmarks and pigment spots of the skin and assess their development. The investigation helps to discover skin cancer early.

Cardiopulmonary exercise tolerance test

Your physical performance and breathing function changes during exercise are evaluated. Above all this is used to diagnose effort asthma. This procedure is meant for patients with pulmonary diseases for diagnosis as well as healthy people who want to know their physical performance ability (amateur and professional athletes).

Diffusion investigation During diffusion investigation the ability of gases to enter circulation from the lungs is measured. The investigation gives information about gas exchange disorders on the level of pulmonary alveoles.

Bronchoscopy This is a diagnostic investigation of bronchi that is required for the inspection of airways and diagnosis elaboration. Also to perform other treatment procedures and plan further treatment.

Methacholine test Methacholine test is used to assess hyperreactivity of airways, it tries to provoke bronchospasm that is characteristic to asthma.

Whole body plethysmography Resistance and penetrability of airways are measured, total capacity and residual capacity, airway resistance are evaluated during whole body plethysmography.

Spirography Spirography investigation shows your lung capacity and penetrability of airways. It is used to monitor pulmonary diseases and the course of the disease. Simple and fast investigation of airways with easily interpreted result.

Bronchodilator test After inhalation of a medicine relaxing the smooth muscles of bronchi the change of the penetrability of the bronchi is evaluated with spirography.

Allergological skin tests and provocation tests

Skin tests are used to discover the allergens causing allergy. Skin-prick tests, intracutaneous tests and epicutaneous tests (e.g. patch test) are used to investigate different allergens. Sometimes (in case of drug and food allergies) a provocation test with suspected allergen is required. Anti-allergic medications should not be used for one week before the tests.

Specific IgE against allergens in blood

Used to discover the allergens causing allergy in blood. Can also be determined during the use of anti-allergy medications.

Diagnostics of immune deficiency

On the basis of blood analysis it is possible to assess the level of different immune system cells and antibodies and their function.Se

Health audit packages

One-day health audit (4 hours) Health audit is a complex analysis of health that helps to avoid diseases or discover them in the initial stage. After the investigations and procedures a summing-up consultation of a specialist takes place during which the results of the health audit are presented to you. If needed we will prepare an action plan that helps to avoid and resolve the disease symptoms found during the health audit.

Two-day health audit (32 hours) This is a very thorough health audit. During the first day we perform several main analyses and add additional analyses to the second day schedule if needed. During the two-day inpatient health audit you can compose the package for yourself. Additional investigations and analyses and consultations by specialists can be added to the basic package according to your health problems. The price of additional investigations and consultations will be added to the price of the basic package.

Cardiologic health audit We recommend the cardiologic package if you have had previous heart diseases, feel pain in heart region, have cardiac arrhythmias or your blood pressure is elevated. The package is also suitable if your lifestyle is speedy and stressful or there are cardiovascular diseases in your family.

In recent years, our rehabilitation services have gained approval for the efficiency of treatment and modern approach.

Our goal is to use rehabilitation in order to help our patients to return to their daily activities and regain their ability to work. Our multiprofessional team includes a rehabilitation physician, nurse, physiotherapist, activity therapist, speech therapist, prosthetist, psychologist, lymphatic therapist, social worker, masseuses and care takers.

The Clinic is providing modern methods, equipment and skills – all of which help our patients return to their daily lives. The Clinic of Rehabilitation has two centers: inpatient rehabilitation center and outpatient rehabilitation center. In 2014 a modern Amputee Care Center was opened to help civilians as well as military servicemen who have returned from missions.

Physiotherapy in pool Physiotherapy in pool develops almost all muscles, stimulates the work of respiratory system and regulates cardiac activity. Water gymnastics stimulates blood supply and normalises blood pressure.

Complex investigation of load distribution of feet (60 min)

The complex investigation of load distribution of foot sole is the most exact method to examine foot complaints. The duration of the investigation is 45-60 minutes. The investigation is performed by a doctor.

Local cold therapy Cold therapy (cryotherapy) is used in different fields of medicine: rheumatology, orthopaedics, surgery, sports medicine, neurology, rehabilitation, e.g. good effect with massage and therapeutic gymnastics. Local cold therapy is above all meant for alleviation of acute inflammations and severe pain.

Extreme cold treatment session

Extreme cold treatment of the whole body is indicated for most joint diseases, rheumatic vertebral column diseases, asthma and post-traumatic joint and muscle pains. Extreme cold treatment is a procedure with anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. Extreme cold treatment is also used to increase strength and speed in athletes and to increase general wellbeing.
