Hospitals Meet Security Challenges with Integrated Security and Facility Solutions | 11

    White paper

The process o security integration can be as simple as a video surveillanceimage associated with an access control door, or it can be as comprehensiveas the ollowing scenario.

A nurse enters the healthcare acilitys parking garage by presenting heraccess control card (which is also her photo identifcation card) to the accesscontrol card reader at the garage entrance. The card is read, accepted, andthe barrier gate is raised or entry into the garage. The acceptance o the cardalso activates her sta management tag, so she is now an active employee inthe sta management localisation, tracking, and identifcation system.

As she moves rom the garage into the hospital, she starts her day in theintensive care unit, ready to care or her patients. One o her patients, recovering rom an operation, has a patient management tag which identifesthe patient and the room the patient occupies. In the room, the medicalequipment has asset management tags on each device which associatesthe equipment to the room and the patient, enabling the nurse access to acomplete record o all the equipment needed or the patients care. She alsohas access to the in ormation necessary to identi y needed equipment whenrequired, as all o the hospitals medical equipment and assets are identifedand tracked through the asset management system.

This hospital, the caregivers, and the security team have the best possiblesolution in place to monitor the status and location o the equipment, itscurrent state in terms o maintenance and service requirements, and the li ecycle cost management. And when this real-time data is integrated into thesecurity and asset management procedures, it optimises asset use and canreduce the associated costs o buying additional or extra pieces o medicaland administrative equipment.

As the nurse enters the patients room, she uses the hand hygiene station, where her badge is scanned and her use o the device is recorded in the hand

hygiene monitoring compliance so tware to maintain and monitor compliance, providing documentation or continual process improvement in eliminatinghospital acquired in ections.

Meanwhile, the pharmacy ulflls a needed prescription or the patient, and themedication is transported to the intensive care unit, and monitored throughoutthe process by the asset and sta management tags associated with the drug, the transport cart, and the sta member to increase the sa ety and security o the process.

While this normal routine is in progress, the emergency room is actively

treating patients with a variety o medical needs. There is however adisturbance in the emergency room treatment area. The severity o theincident requires the hospital to lock down the area through restricted access
