Process to start testing with Carestart• Use the current resource request process to request Carestart

test kits from PHD • If a facility already has a CLIA certificate of wavier and wants to

start using this test they must notify CMS and LFS of the new test by completing the following: • CMS 116 to [email protected]• Report new testing information through COVID-19 Testing

• FDA will meet on October 26th to consider it, ruling expected between Halloween and Thanksgiving

• Pfizer has proposed giving children 1/3 of the adult dosage • This may require adding more diluent to each injection or using a

different vial or syringe

J&J applies to FDA for booster dose • J&J applies to FDA to approve a booster dose in recipients age

18 and older • One dose of the J&J vaccine, the only adenovirus-based COVID-19

vaccine used in the United States, is currently 71% protective, according to the CDC.

• J&J is submitting to the FDA data showing that when a booster of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine was given 6 months after the single shot, antibody levels increased 9-fold 1 week after the booster, and continued to climb to 12-fold higher 4 weeks after the booster.

• The FDA previously announce they will consider J&J booster doses during a meeting slated for next week. 17

FDA upcoming meetings • On Oct. 14, the committee will discuss an amendment to the

emergency use authorization of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine for the administration of a booster dose, in individuals 18 years of age and older.

• On Oct. 15, the VRBPAC will discuss amending the emergency use authorization of Johnson and Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine for the administration of a booster dose, in individuals 18 years of age and older.

• On Oct. 16, the committee will discuss Pfizer data on COVID-19 vaccine for children 5-11

COVID Boosters – Pfizer • Only Pfizer boosters are approved and available at this time.

• The FDA is expected to meet Oct 14-15 to review the data for both J&J and Moderna and recommendations are expected to follow

• The CDC recommends the following populations should receive a booster shot 6 months following their second dose of their Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine:• People 65 years and older;• Residents in long-term care settings; and• People aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions

• The CDC recommends the following populations may receive a booster shot 6 months following their second dose of their Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine:• People aged 18-49 years with underlying medical conditions; and• People aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and

Boosters and LTC Facilities • CVS has cancelled booster clinics with at least two of the SNFs

and RCFEs in our county so far and have stated they are at capacity and no longer scheduling any booster clinics for facilities.

• Most pharmacies will not accommodate sites under 30 people • PHD will have a mobile vaccine team that will work with the

smaller facilities that do not meet the 30 dose requirement for boosters• This will start Oct 7th and we plan to do 4 days a week and go to

facilities • If you are a small facility or large facility as a last resort please use

the link to sign up for the PHD local mobile booster program 22

MDRO Prevention Workgroup for SNF• The CDPH HAI Program is launching a statewide project with ventilator-equipped skilled nursing facilities (vSNF)

focusing on MDRO prevention. • The vSNF Workgroup is an opportunity to receive one-on-one infection prevention support from CDPH HAI

Program Infection Preventionists, and participate in educational workshops (BRN CE will be offered). The vSNFproject will also interface with the CDPH HAI Program LTACH Collaborative to discuss interfacility communication and antimicrobial resistance-related topics.

• Participation in the project will provide your facility with: • Periodic onsite infection prevention assessments with an HAI Program Infection Preventionist• Assistance with developing a quality improvement project specific to your facility needs • Web-based workshops with opportunities for train-the-trainer education • Continuing education credits for participating staff members

• As a member of the vSNF Workgroup, vSNF staff will commit to: • Obtaining appropriate leadership approvals • Participating in onsite assessments • Implementing a quality improvement project including adherence monitoring to track hand hygiene and environmental
