    The healthcare industry includes establishments rangingrom small-town private practices o physicians thatemploy only one medical assistant to busy inner-cityhospitals that provide thousands o diverse jobs.

    The healthcare industry includes hospitals, nursingand residential care acilities, physicians oces, dentaloces, home healthcare services, oces o other healthpractitioners and ambulatory healthcare services.

    Employment Outlook

    As one o the largest industries in 2008,healthcare provided 14.3 million jobs or wage

    and salary workers.Ten o the 20 astest growing occupations are

    healthcare related.

    Healthcare will generate 3.2 million new wage andsalary jobs through 2018, more than any otherindustry, largely in response to rapid growth in theelderly population.

    Most workers have jobs that require less than ouryears o college education, but health diagnosingand treating practitioners are highly educated.
