A message to the community from the hospital CEO

Be treated well

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare recognized for patient- and family-centered care

Dear Friends:The holiday season is upon us, and my thoughts turn to giving thanks. As I reflect on this past year, I am so

very humbled and grateful to serve as the CEO of such a mission-driven institution. It’s a blessing to be part of this team of Associates and physicians that touch so many lives and make such a positive impact on this community.

Over the past year, we have continued to grow and improve the care we provide. This is a continuous journey to help ensure we deliver the very best, most efficient, quality care. In light of our passionate pursuit of excellence, Methodist Healthcare has been recognized for the fifth year in a row as the best hospital in Memphis by U.S. News & World Report. Methodist Healthcare was also recognized as being an Exemplar Hospital for patient- and family-centered care and was recently recognized as a Top Work Place by The Commercial Appeal. Finally, Methodist continues to be acknowledged for excellence in cardiac and orthopedic care.

Ensuring that you remain proud of your community hospital, Methodist North has undertaken and completed renovations on all of our medical and surgical floors and expanded our

hospitalist program and many others. These changes and improvements have made it possible for us to continue providing high quality care for this community.

Our community outreach has also continued to grow. Our community health fair was a record-setting success, and our off-site community health fair at the Ed Rice Community Center was phenomenal. We have also partnered with many school and civic organizations to bring healthcare to our community. At each of these events, we provided free health screenings, health education and access to medical advice to countless people in our community. This outreach has allowed us to expand our care to enrich lives and promote healthy living even outside the walls of our hospital.

Most of all, I am thankful for our patients and families and for the wonderful people in our community. Thank you for choosing Methodist North Hospital. On behalf of our Associates and physicians at Methodist North, I wish you a very blessed and joyous holiday season and a prosperous, healthy new year.

Yours in service,

“Several years ago, we began our journey to change our culture to make our patients and their families feel welcome and include them in healthcare decisions,” said MLH Vice President of Patient- and Family-Centered Care Michelle Collis. “We have a family and guest policy rather than a visitor policy. Heart-healthy changes for the whole family

Making changes to be more heart-healthy is important for the whole

family. The best way to help your kids develop healthy habits for life is to be

a good role model. Here are some great ways to keep your own heart healthy and

help other family members as well.

4 heart-smart habits1. Change the way you grocery shop. Try spending most of your time at

the grocery store on the perimeter of the store. Gather snacks such as carrots, cherry tomatoes and bananas before hitting the inner aisles.

2. Focus on eating right. A healthy diet helps keep your heart healthy. Fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, lean meats and fish and whole grains should be the staples of your family’s meals.

3. Be active together. Plan time for fun family activities such as walks, bike rides or games like hide-and-seek. Limit time in front of the TV or computer and create your own fun instead of watching others.

4. Reduce stress. Stress can have a powerful effect on the heart. Taking time out for a quiet walk or full-body stretch can help relieve stress.

A healthy heart helps contribute to a long, healthy life for you and your loved ones. Talk with your doctor if you have questions about the health of your heart.

A healthy heart through exerciseExercise helps strengthen your heart and has other benefits as well. But if it’s been a while since you’ve been active, here are a few tips for long-term success:

Set reasonable expectations. You may be excited to get in shape and improve your health, but a 5-mile jog is likely not a good way to get started. Start gradually, with perhaps a short walk around the neighborhood or in the mall (after you have consulted your doctor), and then slowly increase the distance or intensity.

Make it fun. If you find walking to be boring, then try an activity you enjoy, like swimming or dancing. You are much more likely to stick to an exercise plan when you enjoy what you are doing.

Track your success. Changes in health can be incremental. Keep a log of your activities so you can look back to see how far you’ve come. Noticeable progress can help motivate you to continue on a healthy path.

Consult your physician before you begin an exercise program to be sure it is safe. Remember, an active life can be good for your heart!

When cooler weather rolls around, viruses and bacteria have a great time mingling as people spend more time together indoors. A mix of good hygiene, a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate rest and more can provide protection from infection. To help keep your immune system strong:

• Wash your hands frequently. One of the easiest ways to keep germs at bay is to wash them away. Use regular soap and water for at least 20 seconds, as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. Antibacterial soaps have not been shown to be more effective at preventing colds and flu than regular soap and water in household studies. Scientists are also concerned using antibacterial products could lead to more resistant bacteria, or superbugs, that are more difficult to treat.*

• Get vaccinated. It’s important to get vaccinated against the flu each year (usually in the fall, but vaccination in the winter can still provide benefits) to help protect yourself from the season’s most common flu strains. Everyone ages 6 months and older should get a flu vaccination.** It is available as a shot or nasal-spray vaccine. Consult your doctor about whether you should get the flu vaccine and which type is right for you.

• Eat a nutritious diet. A well-balanced diet enhances your immune system. Think vitamins and minerals when grocery shopping. Choose colorful fruits and vegetables, whole-grains and lean protein. Your doctor may recommend a multi-vitamin or other supplements if you have deficiencies.

• Get moving. Being moderately active for just 30 minutes each day can help give your body extra defenses to fight off disease.*** A brisk walk, stair climbing, swimming or, of course, dancing can help you and your immune system feel more energized. Just shake your body! Talk to your doctor about activities that may be best for you.

• Reduce stress. Being pulled in too many directions with work, family or other obligations can weaken your immune system. In addition to exercise to help beat stress, you can help calm your mind through meditation, yoga, a funny movie or cuddling with a pet or loved one. It’s OK to take time for yourself and celebrate the good times. Your health — mental and physical — will thank you.

• Get enough sleep. The restorative powers of sleep help recharge your immune system. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Taking a bath or listening to soft music before bedtime can help you be dreaming a dream. If you have problems sleeping, let your doctor know.

Help yourself and loved ones stay healthy year-round by having annual checkups, preventive screenings and discussing family health history with your doctor.

Here is a note we recently received from a patient:

I was admitted to Methodist North Hospital for a massive heart attack. I have never been treated any better in any facility in Memphis. The nurses and doctors were outstanding to my wants and needs. I don’t believe I would have been in better hands anywhere in the tri-state area. Again, thanks to everyone for their kindness and consideration. If I have to go back, I will not hesitate to go to North.
