Based on the hugely popular book by Mary-Ann Shaffer, ‘The Guernsey literary and potato peel pie society’ is

set on the island of Guernsey in the aftermath of World War II.

Exhibition: Sylvia’s shoesSylvia Sanson emigrated from England in 1949 with her family and settled in McMahons Point. Sylvia took a keen interest in the heritage of her adopted home, joining the North Shore Historical Society Committee and acquiring an extensive collection – particularly of 20th century clothing and accessories, but also dolls, household textiles and domestic technology.

This exhibition showcases beautiful shoes, handbags, gloves and jewellery from Sylvia Sanson’s collection. These objects tell us much about changing taste and fashion from the 1890s to the 1960s, as well as about Sylvia’s personal passion for history and design.

Open now at the North Sydney Heritage Centre, Level 1, Stanton Library (9am-5pm) and throughout the Library during Library hours

Family History Help Desk Friday 1 and 15 March, 10am-12pm The Heritage Centre hosts regular free sessions to provide assistance to individuals researching their family history. This research project goes some way to writing the Chinese back into North Sydney’s history by exploring archives and finding out who these people were and where they lived and worked. North Sydney Council are delighted to announce that the 2019 Don Bank Studio Writer In Residence is The History Council NSW.

The History Council NSW are a not-for-profit organisation whose executive committee includes some of Australia’s most distinguished writers and historians. The president of the Council is Dr Tanya Evans a prominent public historian and academic who is currently Associate Professor at Macquarie University.

The History Council will be collaborating with Stanton Library to produce engaging community programs throughout the year, as well as producing the annual NSW History Week Program.

This is a great opportunity for our community to connect with distinguished history professionals. We look forward to working with the History Council in and wish them the best of luck with producing their History Week program.
