If I worked out as hard as I sleep I would be in spectacular shape. I would have people following me around asking how I do it. Some adagency would want me to be on a box of cereal. Nike would want me toJust Do It. But since I’m a better sleeper than gym rat that hasn’t happened.

I’m not complaining. It is my fault. I go to the gym on a regular basis. And there are plenty of gyms and workouts to choose from so I have noexcuses. My problem is I do not, nor have I ever, liked to sweat. Sweating is unpleasant and I don’tdo unpleasant. That, my friends, is going to change right now. I am making my 2016 resolution tosweat like there is no tomorrow.

Our cover models are people who have sweated a lot. And it looks great on them. They, like allthe other fit people I see at they gym and around town, are going to be my role models. They won’tknow it, but I will be watching them (not in a creepy way) to see what they do in their workouts.

If I could have given my 20-year-old-self some advice, one of the things I tell me is to exercise! I would also tell me a few other things but, frankly, I don’t know you guys well enough to share.Maybe someday. But not today. I don’t want to scare anyone.

Working on BOG, (thanks to Dan and Sandra Meyer for having me) is turning out to be such anawarding experience. I have gotten to meet some really wonderful people who are doing great and inspirational things. Another thing I’ve enjoyed is working with the other writers. They are dedicated, talented, and much appreciated! I want to thank the experts that contributed articles this month as well.

I look forward to meeting new and interesting people to introduce to you through BOG! Have agreat start to your New Year!

According to Carlo, thicktomato sauces have theirplace for ragus but the classfocused on light and healthy, fresh, quick, and easy.

Cynamon Garrott cameto the class because sheloves cooking Italian food athome and was looking forideas to make her dishes authentic. Robbie Skidmorecame because she has traveled to Italy and enjoysItalian food. Both wanted tosee what Carlo did thatmight be different.

Students learned somesurprising facts: you don’thave to spend money on expensive olive oil, though“EVO” or Extra Virgin Oliveoil is a must. Carlo explainedthat any low priced extra virgin olive oil is fine and thatsautéing fresh tomatoes(preferably Roma or sweetcherry) in olive oil is whatprovides the basic flavor formany Italian dishes. Heprefers purple onions because of their naturalsweetness. One or two small

smashed boiled potatoescan thicken and flavor asauce, as can cream, thougha little goes a long way. Usejust enough to absorb intothe ingredients. Add smallamounts of water as thesauce evaporates to preventburning, but use sparinglyso that ingredients continuecooking. No cheese isneeded in most recipes except perhaps, a littleParmesan for garnish.

Proper use of herbs isimportant in Italian dishes.Red pepper flakes andpinches of sea salt are sta-ples; garlic, used sparingly, enhances flavor. Choppedparsley adds flavor, not justgarnish. Carlo also usesfinely chopped rosemary inmany recipes. Basil is notchopped because it turnsbrown so Carlo adds basilsprigs then removes themonce the sauce absorbs theflavor. Other herbs such asoregano or thyme are usedby the sprig (vs. chopping)and removed before serving.

Simple is best when it comes to easy-to-make, healthy Italian cooking with fresh ingredients. On a chilly November evening,

Carlo Pellegrini prepared a basic tomato sauceover pasta, seared pork chops with fennel, andshrimp with mussels and zucchini for a cookingclass at his restaurant, Pellegrini.

Tips from an Italian Chef

Carlo Pellegrini demonstrates cooking with fresh, simple ingredients.Purple onions, tomatoes, and extra virgin olive oil are key ingredients insimple Italian dishes.

Perhaps the biggest secret to light and healthy isto use fresh ingredients andto remember that less ismore. Each ingredientshould be added sparingly.

What were favorite tipsfrom the class? Robbie likesthe potato thickening trickand the fact that such a smallamount of cream can beused. A registered nursewho works as a disease

manager/wellness consult-ant, she plans to share thehealthy aspects of fresh ingredients and small quantities with her clients.

With the start of the NewYear and the traditionalfocus on health and fitness, light Italian cooking is wortha try. Julia McSherry is a freelancewriter based in Greeley.

JosephinePark offers a traditional parklike setting with the grassfield, playarea, shelters withtables. It also offers a naturalopen space area, as well. This park is home to lots offeathered and furry creatures, both big and small. Our kidslove chasing the bunnies tosee which is faster. If you arelucky, you might catch aglimpse of the fox or the widevariety of birds that passthrough from season to sea-son. The views of the moun-tains are amazing. There arebenches that provide a placeto sit to take it all in.

Recovering from the holidays or maybejust looking for a new routine? Why nottry a “StayCation?” You won’t have to

drive too far to feel like you have gone some-where. You can plan a getaway practically inyour own backyard!

Greeley has over 30 parkswith over 590 developedacres of park lands. And oneof our family favorites is theSheep Draw Trail which isnow connected to the PoudreRiver Trail. We like to start outbehind King Scoopers off of71st and head northeast pastthe Greeley FunPlex. Thereare two underpasses: one on10th Street and the other at4th Street. The kids love spot-ting all the animals along theway. Gray horned owl andeven a bald eagle have madean appearance on one of ourtrips along the trail. Make sureto bring the camera on thisone. The scenery changes asyou go along and the moun-tains pop up from time to timeand give a picturesque peepinto the beauty we have here. There are resting spotsthroughout the trail before youarrive at Trailhead Junction located at N. 59th Avenueand West F Street. This trail isaround 2 miles.

Another one that we like toexplore is Josephine B. JonesPark (nicknamed the sun-flower park) located at 263152nd Ave. Court. The Parkoverlooks part of HWY 34 andsome of its structures are visi-ble from there. The park sits

The Sheep Draw Trail, about 2 miles long, winds around some beautiful scenery, as you go along, the mountains pop-up from time totime to give you a picturesque view into the beauty we have here.

In 2005, shortly after retiring and relocating to Northern Colorado, to becloser to our daughter and family, I noticed an announcement in the GreeleyTribune that the Nutcracker was being performed at the UCCC. It had been yearssince I had last seen this wonderfulChristmas production and quickly boughttwo tickets for myself and my four year oldgranddaughter. Thus began a ten-year tradition, which has grown to include another granddaughter, now ten, a grandson, now eight, their mother and father, grandpa and me! Hard to believethat the four year old is now 14.

We were thrilled this year to have the ten year old onstage looking out, as a member of the Angel group. Her involvement as a member of the cast opened up anotheravenue of awareness for me in volunteering backstage.

Needless to say, over the years we have accumulatedquite the collection of Nutcrackers, ballerinas, soldiers, angels, etc. from the Boutique.

Living in Milliken, we have driven in ice, snow and rain, bundled in heavy coats, boots, caps and mittens, determinedto attend the show. Having lived in areas that did not havesuch wonderful productions, we feel so fortunate to live in anarea now that is near a community with such talent.

Thanks to Debie Larsen and the Colorado DanceTheatre Board for bringing us this wonderful family event. What a delightful journey we have had over the years sharing the evening together.Thank you Greeley! G

Financial Health: Working on Your Credit Score

by Edward Jones

For example … … Pay yourself first.Even ifyou aren’t living “paycheckto paycheck,” you probablydon’t have much troublespending your money –because there’s alwayssomething that you or afamily member needs, always a repair required foryour home or your car, always one more bill topay. But if you are going toachieve your long-termgoals, such as a comfortableretirement, you need to invest consistently. So before you pay everyoneelse, pay yourself first byhaving some money auto-matically moved from yourchecking or savings account each month intoan investment. … Take advantage of your opportunities. If you have a401(k) or similar plan atwork, take full advantageof it. Contribute as much asyou can afford – or at leastenough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered – and choose themix of investments that

Time for Some New Year’s (Financial) Resolutions

give you the potential toachieve the growth youneed at a level of risk withwhich you are comfortable. … Focus on the long term.In the short term, you mightbe excused for not wantingto invest. The headlines aretypically scary, the financialmarkets are frequentlyvolatile and the future oftenlooks murky. Yet, if you canlook past the uncertainties of today and keep yourfocus on tomorrow, you willfind it easier to follow a disciplined investment strategy that gives you the opportunity to meet your long-term goals, such as acomfortable retirement.… Don’t be driven by fear. When the market is down, investors tend to react withfear. Specifically, they rushto sell their investments, afraid that if they don’t “cuttheir losses,” they might sustain even bigger ones.If you can get past this feeling, you may find that adown market can offer youthe chance to buy quality investments at good prices.

If you’re like many people, you might bemulling over some New Year’s resolutions, such as hitting the gym more, learning a

new language or taking a cooking class. All are worthy goals, but why not add some financial resolutions as well?

… Forget about the “hotstocks.”You’ll hear friends,co-workers and talkingheads on television touttoday’s “hot stocks.” But bythe time you might hearabout them, they may havecooled off – and, in anycase, they might not be appropriate for your needs.Forget about “getting richquick in the market” – itprobably won’t happen. Trueinvestment success requirespatience and persistence. … Cut down on your debts. It’s easy to pile up debts, but

a lot harder getting rid ofthem. Yet, if you can reduce your debt loadeven moderately, you’llfree up money you coulduse to invest. So look forways to conserve, cutback and consolidate – it will be worth the effort.

Making these resolu-tions – and sticking to them– can help you as you worktoward achieving your financial goals. This article was written byEdward Jones for use by Brian and Kim Larson.

Imagine: you and your family are enjoying apleasant summer day at your company’sannual picnic. Your co-workers are playing

volleyball, their children are enjoying the playground equipment, and there is plenty toeat. Suddenly, your teenager sprains anankle, but someone attending the picnic hashad First Aid training, and she receives quick, competent, basic medical aid, you can seekprofessional medical care. With the prevalenceof First Aid training in our society, perhapsmultiple “someones” step in to assist.

Now imagine a familymember, friend, or co-worker is experiencing adifferent kind of distress. You’ve noticed that she isisolating herself from oth-ers, is tearful or angry, hashad significant changes inher appetite, smells of alcohol after lunchtime, has made odd statements,or is demonstrating otherbehaviors that cause you tofeel that something just isn’tright. What do you do?You want to help, to providethe same competent assistance you would if shewas experiencing a physi-cal injury or illness, but youdon’t know what to do tohelp, or even how to talk toher about your concerns. You might even try to

ignore her. Fortunately, FREE training

is now available to providethe basic skills for anyone torespond to a person experi-encing a behavioral healthcrisis.

Mental Health First Aidwas first developed inAustralia in 2001, but nowhas spread across the globe.Attendees learn how to recognize and provide assistance to someone experiencing the feelingsand behaviors associatedwith depression, suicidality, anxiety, self-injury, psychosis,or addiction. As weather cools and days becomeshorter, most people look forward tothe changing seasons. We can get

back outside during the day and enjoy thebeauty of the season before the snow starts tofall. It’s a time to plan for the holiday and spendtime with the people we care about most.

While so many peoplearound you are enjoyingthe cooler weather and allthat comes with it, do youfind yourself feeling sad, lethargic, and a little with-drawn? Does this mood hitabout the same time yearafter year? You may be suf-fering from the “Winter Blues”,also known as SeasonalAffective Disorder”(SAD).

SAD is a recurring formof depression that hits a person about the same timeevery year. It is temporaryand usually occurs duringthe fall and winter months.Symptoms include lack ofenergy, pain in your joints, stomach problems, catchingcolds easily, weight gain, and feeling sad and irritable. You may also shy awayfrom social activities, havefeelings of guilt and anxiety. You are not alone; manypeople suffer from SAD.

This phenomenon hasonly recently become asubject of scientific study. It is believed that the lack ofsunlight might be the majorcause. So how do you beatthe winter blues?

Get out in the sunshineas much as possible. TheUV rays are much weaker in the winter, so spend sometime outdoors to absorb vitamin D.

Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, but low in processed foods.Get a good night’s sleep.Sometimes this is easier saidthan done, but turn outs thelights at about the same timeeach night, and try to get intoa good sleeping routine.

Exercise, exercise, exercise! Many studies suggest that exercise worksas well as antidepressants inovercoming depression, due to the increase in level of endorphins, also known asthe feel good hormone.

So what exercises workthe best, how much shouldyou exercise, and how often?

First, choose somethingthat you enjoy, so that you willkeep up with it. If you do enjoysocial activities, an exerciseclass might be fun. Walkingis also a great way to getsome extra exercise, and itcan be done alone or with a

group.  If  you can get outside in the sunshine whileyou exercise, the extra sunlight can really help youto feel better. To build muscle, weight training is a greatchoice.

Below are some exam-ples of exercises that helpbuild muscle.  Some can bedone using just your bodyweight while some can bedone with weights or exer-cise bands or tubing.1. Pushup; These can be

done against a wall or onthe floor.

2. Squats; There are manyvariations of these to ac-commodate for any fitnesslevel.

3. Arm circles4. Lateral arm raises

5. Overhead Press6. Band twist and push out7. Plank8. Crunch variations9. Band flye or press10.Reverse flye11. Bent over row with a

band or dumbbells12. Leg raises: Standing or

on the floor13. Bicep curls14. Triceps extensions or

kick backsTry to get at least 150

minutes of activity in eachweek, doing a variety of exercises. A combination ofweight training and cardioseems to work best for mostpeople. Evon Schones is a fitness expertand personal trainer in Greeley.

Experts foryears, have agreed on somevery important keys in keepingyour skin looking young andhealthy. Prevention is key.Our worseenemies are sun, smoking, and dehydration. Ifyou are not having any directsun exposure, a daily SPF of30 will suffice. If you arespending concentrated timeoutdoors, step it up to anSPF of 40-50 with either zincor titanium oxide as active ingredients. Stop smoking, and drink plenty of water.

Tailor your products toyour skin type. The averageAmerican female spends almost $2500 on skin careproductsevery year, andwith many of those are justmore of the same old thing.Washes - should be gentleand never use soap. Soapstrips good oils and dryingout your skin can make evenacne prone skin worse. Followthe following steps and yourskin will thank you! You canmechanically exfoliate yourface with granular scrubs orbrushes but we like AHAslike glycolic acid. Repair -Anti-oxidants, like Vit C, help to take skin stress awayand fade discolorations.Everyones favorite-retinol for

antiaging. Moisturize -Especially here in Coloradowhere it is so dry.

A healthy diet and hormone balance is the inside factor that we forget.Berries, pomegranates richin antioxidants, and healthyoils found in nuts, avocados, and olive oil are good for ourskin.Green tea and choco-late (yeah!) are beneficialas well. Drink plenty of water, and avoid excess caffeineand alcohol.

Low levels of thyroid, testosterone, and estrogensreduce collagen and elas-ticity in our skin, thus agingus. Supplements rich in antioxidants, choline, andbiotin, can help and are options when we don’talways do the right things.

For problematic skin, you may need to see yourphysician or a skin carespecialist. Learn to readthe labels, and know whatis in your products. Keep itsimple, but get high qualityproducts. Jacqueline Bearden M.D. Owner of RestorationMedical Aesthetics locatedat 5100 W 20th St., Ste A. 970-396-4856.

down the birth canal.“It was something we didn’texpect, yet are always pre-pared for,” Burgess said.

Burgess called in Dr.Natalie Rochester.“When Icame into the room, Jenaewas pushing well, but thebaby was no longer tolerat-ing pushing,” Rochestersaid. “Jenae’s pushing hadmoved the baby very lowinto her pelvis, low enoughthat a vaginal delivery wasthe safest option for delivery.”

Rochester and Burgessexplained to Hull and herhusband, Alex, that the babyneeded to be deliveredquickly to receive antibiotics. In newborns, choriomeningi-tis infections can lead topneumonia, meningitis andeven death.

“Dr. Rochester told us itwas time for intervention,”Hull said. “We either neededto try forceps or vacuum ex-traction, or we needed to gostraight to a C-section. I wasterrified of a C-section’s re-covery time, and eventhough we were in a crisissituation, Dr. Rochester and

At nearly 8 p.m. on Oct.26, 2014 — five days pasther due date — Hull was inthe final minutes of an otherwise uncomplicated26-hour labor and delivery. She’d been pushing forthree hours. That’s whenHull’s temperature spiked, and the baby’s heart ratespiked along with it.

Lindsay Burgess, thecertified nurse midwifewho’d been by Hull’s sidesince she arrived at MCRearly that morning, sus-pected an infection. Hull’samniotic sac had brokenduring labor, and the fluidhad slowly leaked out, creating an opportunity forbacteria to enter. To fightHull’s infection, calledchoriomeningitis, Burgessstarted her on intravenousantibiotics right away.

But the baby, a girl, needed antibiotics ASAP,too. Her racing heart ratewarned Burgess that shewas in distress.Unfortunately, the babywas in a precarious posi-tion, as she was most of theway — but not all the way –

When Jenae Hull wrote herbirthing plan for her first baby, she couldn’t have foreseen

what would happen. Nobody could have —including the certified nurse midwives atUCHealth OB/Gyn in Greeley who cared for her throughout her pregnancy.

Janae Hull and her husband, Alex, marvel at their daughter, Kylie. In thefinal minutes of Janae’s otherwise uncomplicated 26-hour labor, a majorcomplication arose. Her certified nurse midwife and OB/Gyn physicianteamed up to support mother and baby through the delivery at MedicalCenter of the Rockies in Loveland.

Lindsay listened to all of myconcerns and were veryhonest and patient with me.

Though such measureswere definitely not part of herbirth plan, Jenae and Alexagreed to try vacuum extrac-tion. If baby Hull still wouldn’tmake an appearance, thenthey’d deliver by an emer-gency C-section.

“Whether the baby wouldbe delivered vaginally or sur-gically, we were in a high-risk situation at this point,”Rochester said, describingthe process by which shemight have to pull the babyback up the birth canal for aC-section delivery. “Eitherway, it’s risky for both babyand mom.”

In a vacuum-extractiondelivery, the doctor attachesa special, palm-sized suc-tion cup to the baby’s head. The cup is attached to asmall electric suction pump, which maintains the vacuumpressure. When the mother

pushes, the doctor gentlypulls on the cup’s handle toassist in moving the babydown and out.

Hull pushed. Noprogress. She waited foranother contraction andpushed again. Still nomovement.

She pushed a total offive times. A nurse enteredthe room and announcedthat the operating roomwas ready. Hull gatheredher last bit of strength forone final push... and at 8:11pm, baby Kylie slipped free.

The Hollywood endingsoon segued into morechallenges, though. Kyliehad trouble breathing, andher heartbeat was still ir-regular, so she was rushedto the special-care nursery.

“I had dreams of skin-to-skin time and nursingwithin the first few minutes,”Hull said. “It wasn’t mydream birth story, but it was

Good dental health begins at birth.A child is born with 20 baby teeth already developing in the alveolar bone

of the jaws. These teeth don’t generally startto erupt into the mouth until six months of age. However, it is not unusual for some childrento get their first tooth around age one.

It is important to promotegood oral hygiene immedi-ately after birth, eventhough the baby teeth maynot be present. A clean, moist washcloth is all that isneeded to wipe off an infant’s gums twice daily.Baby teeth are susceptibleto decay as they erupt intothe oral cavity. Consequently,The American DentalAssociation recommendsthat a child have their firstdental appointment by oneyear of age. This is also whybrushing with a small, softbristled toothbrush and arice sized bead of fluori-dated toothpaste twice aday is important during andafter tooth eruption.Flossing once a day be-comes necessary when twoadjacent baby teeth touch.Children should always becarefully monitored whenbrushing their teeth, ensuring they are using theappropriate amount oftoothpaste and not swal-lowing it. By age three, alarger amount of toothpasteapproximating the size of a

pea is an appropriate amount.Baby teeth are not only

important for chewing andspeaking, but also for main-taining the space necessaryfor the developing perma-nent, adult teeth. Toothdecay is one of the leadingcauses for the prematureloss of baby teeth. Early lossof baby teeth can lead tocrowding of the adult teethand malocclusions (badbites) because the adjacentpermanent teeth drift into thevacated space, blocking theproper eruption of other permanent teeth. TheAmerican Association ofOrthodontists recommendsthat a child be seen by an orthodontist by age seven toevaluate for dental crowdingand potentially developingmalocclusions.

Dental plaque containsharmful bacteria that resultsin dental decay and gingivitis.Poor hygiene, including thelack of brushing, leads to theaccumulation of excessiveplaque around the teeth andgums. Dental decay and

Raise your hand if you’veever asked people to

repeat themselves, experi-enced difficulty hearing in thepresence of noise, or have feltembarrassed because youmisunderstood what others were saying. If yourhand is in the air, then you needa hearing test! Other symp-toms of hearing loss include a family history of hear-ing loss, a history of noise expo-sure, or difficulty following

conversations involving more than two people. The sooner hearing loss is diagnosed and treated, the

more successful the treatment will be. Untreated hearingloss can affect many aspects of your everyday life, such asdepression, anxiety, loneliness, and being socially with-drawn. It can not only affect your emotional health, but it canaffect your physical health as well. Some studies show thatuntreated hearing loss is linked to high blood pressure, heart health, and cognitive decline. A recent study alsostated that those with untreated hearing loss experience a30 to 40 percent larger decline in thinking abilities, compared to those with treated hearing loss or no hearingloss at all. Nobody wants to not hear the world aroundthem, AND lose their cognitive function too!

So, what’s the next step? First, find an audiologist youcan trust and whom you feel comfortable. Treating hearingloss is a process, and it’s easier if your audiologist makesthe process as seamless as possible. Second, get to knowyour options. Your audiologist should educate you on yourtreatment choices, and your treatment goals should be acollaboration. Third, keep your family and friends involvedin the treatment process. Hearing loss affects them, too,and realistic expectations should be understood by everyone. Finally, treating hearing loss means lifelong follow-up and care by your audiologist. That is essential tolong-term success!

So, if you raised your hand to any of the signs of hearingloss, schedule an audiological consultation today! To find out more about HRC Services, please contact: Dr. Jacki Reider, Doctor of Audiology, Hearing Rehab Center,2018 35th Avenue, Unit A, Greeley, 970-330-7374.

Healthy Greeley Restaurants

Iwill be the first to admit that sushi is not my firstchoice when dining out. After visiting SushiOne Japanese Fusion Restaurant, that trend

is about to be bucked. Sushi One rocks! People looking for a healthy alternative to burgersand calorie ridden foods need not look further.

Sushi One, Not OnlyHealthy, But Fun Too

Sushi One, a small, intimate venue, is staffed withknowledgeable servers thatare willing to guide dinersthrough the menu, explain thedishes, and make selectionsuggestions.
