Franciscan: A name you can trust Franciscan Primary Care clinics get new name

When a facility has the name Franciscan you know you will receive the compassionate expert care you expect.

Franciscan Health System, recently made a name change to all of its primary care clinics, including family medicine, internal medicine and pediatric clinics. All 15 primary care clinics became Franciscan Medical Clinic in July, said Janis Fegley, DO, Franciscan Medical Group primary care division chief.

“Having a common name links us,” she said. “We did a comprehensive brand study in the community and found that our patients didn’t realize that, in many cases,

our clinics were part of the Franciscan family. Patients told us that this was important to them and helps them identify that they have access to a complete range of high-quality health care services. Naming is one way to show that connection.”

Franciscan Medical Group offers patients a network of doctors and professional providers, in more than 100 clinics, who specialize in a variety of medical fields including heart and vascular, weight loss surgery, women’s health, neurology, orthopedics and sports medicine. Yet, it is family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics that are typically the front door into the exten-sive offerings Franciscan provides.

Helping heartsFranciscan offers state-of-the-art treatments for heart rhythm disordersYour heart is a pump. And like many mechanical pumps, it runs on electricity.

The atria, or heart’s upper chambers, are where the electrical impulses that stimulate your heart’s pumping action begin, explained Franciscan Heart & Vascular Associates cardiac electrophysi-ologist Amrit Guptan, MD, FACC, FHRS. The lower chambers — the ventricles — pick up the signal and do the pumping.

Too many or too few electrical signals can be dangerous, said Dr. Guptan. “With too few, your heartbeat slows. On the other hand, too many, or an ‘electrical storm’ of signals, may cause your heart to stop; a condition called cardiac arrest or sudden death,” he said, stressing the importance of seeing your doctor if unusual symptoms occur.

Know the signs Common heart rhythm disorder symptoms include:• Palpitations — the feeling your

heart is racing or skipping a beat• Chest pain• Dizziness• Passing out, or sensing you may

pass out

While not all symp-toms you feel may be life threatening, passing out, or feeling like you may pass out, require urgent care. “Call your physician or 911 in an emergency,” Dr. Guptan said.

Unique treatment capabilities Franciscan offers the latest heart rhythm

disorder treatments including advanced cardiac ablative

therapies. Typically minimally invasive,

ablation involves inserting a catheter into the heart through a needle puncture and using either hot or cold energy to eliminate the

abnormal electrical firing. “This

procedure in most instances is essentially

curative. Patients require no medication afterwards,”

said Dr. Guptan.Cryoablation is a newer procedure

using extreme cold which is a safer, better tolerated, state-of-the-art treat-ment now available to our patients at St. Joseph Medical Center.

The walnut-sized prostate, which encircles a man’s urethra (tube connecting to the urinary bladder), can cause big problems — like prostate cancer. But the United States Preventive Services Task

Force has called routine prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening into question because of risks associated with unneces-sary cancer treatment, such as inconti-nence and impotence. However, other health care organizations, including the American Cancer Society, still support PSA testing.

Testing saves livesFranciscan Health System urologist Christopher Arroyo, MD, considers PSA screening critical for men age 50 or older.

“Screening — including a PSA test and rectal exam — is the only way we have to detect prostate cancer before it’s symptom-atic, which is when it’s most curable,” said Dr. Arroyo. “Today, we offer so many effective treatment options at the early stages of the disease. We’ve seen a signifi-cant reduction in deaths from prostate cancer since PSA screening began.”

Screening is especially important for African-Americans and men whose father, brother, or son have prostate

cancer. Men who have trouble urinating, blood in their urine or semen, pain with ejaculation or chronic back, hip or pelvis pain may also be at higher risk.

Comprehensive careIf a patient’s PSA test results show signs of cancer, Dr. Arroyo and other Franciscan physicians take several steps before pursuing treatment. “If PSA is elevated, we’ll run more tests that help us more accurately determine if cancer may be present before biopsy,” he said. “Even if it is cancer, in many men, it is slow-growing. We’re more likely to watch and wait. We will only take action to treat the cancer if we’re seeing significant changes.”

If treatment is needed, Franciscan’s leading-edge treatments help save lives and preserve continence and sexual function. These include nerve-sparing, minimally invasive surgical removal of the prostate, often using a robotic-assisted technique, as well as radioactive “seed” implantation and external radiation therapy to help kill cancer cells. Cryotherapy, a technique that freezes prostate tissue, is also available.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month!

New partnership to bring Franciscan and PeaceHealth togetherIn August, plans were announced for Franciscan Health System to become part of a new, larger health system through a partnership between our parent organization Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth.

The partnership will enable Franciscan and PeaceHealth to improve access to services, increase the quality of care

and reduce costs. Both Franciscan and PeaceHealth share similar missions and values.

The integrated health system will combine seven CHI hospitals in Washington and Oregon (including all of Franciscan’s hospitals and programs) with nine PeaceHealth hospitals in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. The new organization will blend together over time and will

include nearly 26,000 employees and about 950 employed physicians.

Recently Franciscan and Burien’s Highline Medical Center also announced a possible affiliation. Over the next several months Franciscan and Highline will continue to evaluate the benefits of an alliance.

Weight loss

Recent research has shown bariatric (weight loss) surgery not only reduces unhealthy excess weight, it can also reverse medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Now, Franciscan Center for Weight Management located at St. Francis Hospital is offering a new option: robotic-assisted bariatric surgery. It’s a minimally invasive technique, performed by a board-certified surgeon, who uses the daVinci® Surgical System.

A cut above “Robotic-assisted bariatric surgery allows us to perform better, more precise procedures for patients,” said Troy Houseworth, MD, a board-certified general surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery at St. Francis Hospital. That’s because the system is equipped with a hi-def, 3D camera that offers surgeons a more detailed view of the area they’re operating on than any other minimally invasive procedure.

What’s more, the robot’s instruments have even greater range of motion than the human wrist — they can rotate 360 degrees inside the patient’s body. “This allows us to be even more accurate with our movements,” added Dr. Houseworth.

A variety of options Surgeons currently can perform robotic-assisted bariatric surgery for sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass — two different bariatric procedures that reduce the size of the stomach so you feel full on less food. People who’ve had bariat-ric surgery in the past and require a surgical revision may also be candidates for robotic-assisted surgery.

In the fast-paced world of health care, we strive to stay mindful of how our care looks and feels to patients and their families. That’s why St. Elizabeth Hospital and Franciscan Medical Group formed the Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) to provide an ongoing and fresh perspective on what it’s like to be a patient in our care.

The Council invites past patients and family to share their impressions directly with hospital and clinic leadership. Members include patients and family members from the community, and Franciscan staff at all levels. Together, they identify issues and find solutions to directly

improve quality and the patient experience.

Shelley Hall got to know the hospital intimately when her daughter called from college to say she was sick — and getting worse. A single mother, Shelley drove to Central Washington University and brought her home, only to rush her to the emergency department days later, in terrible pain and barely conscious. Her systems were shutting down, fast. She was ultimately diagnosed with spinal meningitis. Today, she is happily planning her wedding. “They took such good care of her,” Shelley said. “And they did everything they could to help me be okay, too. They saved her life.” Shelley joined the Council as a way to give back.

Shelley and other Council members have toured the hospital and clinics and provided feedback on what they saw, heard and felt. They worked on improving signage and way-finding. They served as a sounding board for leadership on patient-directed information about health and safety in the hospital.

They are now beginning a patient story capture project. A program director for ACAP Child and Family Services, Shelley recently completed training to become a hospital volunteer, a requirement for entering patient rooms for the new project.

“It’s great to be part of this collaborative effort and to see the commitment at the table,”

Shelley said. “Not all feed-back is positive. It’s give and take, but together we’re improving communication for all involved — patients, doctors, family members and the community.”

You’ve heard the statistic before: One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. So chances are you know someone who has been affected by the disease, and you may be wondering what you can do to stay cancer-free. One of the most important things you can do is to get screened. “If you develop breast cancer, the earlier it’s detected, the easier it is to treat,” said Samuel Cargill, MD, general surgeon with Enumclaw Medical Center.

The American Cancer Society (ACS)

recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40. If you have a family history of the disease or

other risk factors, your doctor may

suggest starting mammograms earlier.

The ACS recommends clinical breast exams every three years for women in their 20s and 30s and annually for women ages 40 and older. It’s also important to do monthly breast self-exams to know what’s normal for your body so you would know if something felt unusual and should be checked out by your physician, Dr. Cargill added.

Seamless and supportive careFranciscan surgeons perform different surgical procedures for treating cancer, including lumpectomy — removing the tumor and some tissue around it; or mastectomy — removing the entire breast. “For women who elect to have a mastec-tomy, we work alongside plastic surgeons who reconstruct the breast either during the same procedure or in a later one for better cosmetic outcomes,” Dr. Cargill said. Patients may also undergo chemotherapy before or after surgery, depending on the type and size of their tumor. “I always tell patients that chemotherapy today isn’t as brutal as it used to be.” Patients who have a lumpectomy often receive radiation to eliminate microscopic cells that may remain after surgery to reduce the likelihood of the cancer coming back.

Cancer nurse navigator Debbie Hellers, RN, BSN, OCN, works closely with patients, families and a multi-disciplinary care team. Because every patient is different, she customizes her approach for each individual.

Debbie can help patients understand medical terminology about diagnosis and treatment. To ease fear and anxiety, she

can accompany you as an advocate to office visits and treatment sessions. She can help find transportation to treat-ments, support groups, nutrition support, social workers and more. Lung nodule clinic We also have a lung nodule clinic which is designed to quickly diagnose, monitor and treat people who have or are suspected of having cancerous lung nodules. Lung nodules are abnormalities in the lungs that are smaller than an inch and can be precursors to lung cancer. Early treatment may cure the cancer.

Quitting smoking If you smoke, quitting will lower your chances of developing lung cancer and improve your chances of recovery. But quitting can be difficult. Prestigious award given to Franciscan surgeon

Franciscan Health System’s chest and lung surgeon, Baiya Krishnadasan, MD, FACS, and St. Joseph Medical Center were recently designated a daVinci® Surgeon/Site Thoracic Epicenter for robotic surgery. Dr. Krishnadasan and St. Joseph are only the third thoracic surgeon/site in the United States — and the only one in the West — to earn this distinction.

Dr. Krishnadasan, medical director of thoracic surgery for St. Joseph Cardiotho-racic Surgeons in Tacoma, is commend-ed for his highly advanced skills while performing complex, minimally invasive surgeries using the daVinci® robot, primarily for patients with lung cancer.

“Dr. Krishnadasan has really changed the playing field for thoracic oncology in the Pierce County area,” said Medical Director of Oncology Frank Senecal, MD, FACP, MBA. “His focus on the patient, by bringing all the crucial

specialties and support staff together for the individual patient, has done a great deal to optimize care and outcomes. His technical expertise in robotics is now being recognized and fortunately will allow many physicians and patients to benefit from his experience,” added Dr. Senecal. “I am grateful to have such a colleague in our oncology program.”

As part of the Epicenter designation, Dr. Krishnadasan teaches thoracic surgeons from hospitals around the country to use the robot during chest and lung surgeries. He also sees patients from all over the west coast who are in need of his advanced surgical skills.

More than 2,500 patients have had robotic surgery at St. Joseph Medical Center, a minimally invasive technique that often means patients experience less pain, less blood loss, a smaller incision and quicker healing than with traditional open surgery.

Holly Dickson, MD, had five of her six children at St. Elizabeth Hospital’s Family Birth Center. She loved the special attention and compassionate care she experienced during each delivery.

“It’s not because I’m a doctor there that I got special attention,” said Dr. Dickson, with Franciscan Medical Group and chief of obstetrics and gynecology at St. Elizabeth. “The doctors and nurses here just really care. We’re a unique center because we’re small. Because of our size, we can devote a lot of time to our patients. You’re not just a number.”

We welcome about 30 newborns a month, Dr. Dickson said.

Medical staff has access to the latest technology and tools. Dr. Dickson said these include a high-tech fetal monitoring system that precisely monitors the labor process.

St. Elizabeth Hospital opened the Family Birth Center last year and

invited residents of Enumclaw to tour its state-of-the-art facility. Our Family Birth Center offers a comfortable environment for family and loved ones; it also enables staff members to accommodate patients’ birth plans — tailoring the labor and birth experience to each woman’s needs.

Dr. Thoophom-Tran is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and has interests in asthma/allergy, obesity and behavioral care. She also enjoys teaching and was a preceptor (an expert or specialist who provides practical experience and training) for USC Medical School students and residents in outpatient clinics.
