OVERVIEW

Health care organizations are complex and constantly changing. The ongoing paradigm shifts of global competitiveness, environmental changes, health regulations, patient-provider interaction, health human resource training and development needs and more over rapid medical and technological innovations are transforming health management organizations. Health care industry requires change managers and leaders who can be ready to adapt and envision the change.

THE HEALTH MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY

The Health Management in a powerful consortium of hospitals, pharmaceuticals, NGOs, allied health care organization, health care academic institutions, national and international health care bodies etc.

THE HEALTH MANAGEMENT ACADEMIA

The program is geared to professionals who aspire to be health care managers. This is a specialized program that amalgamates management skills and knowledge of economics, finance, statistics, and epidemiology and health policy, relevant to those working within the private and government sectors. The program has an integrated and multidisciplinary approach in preparing graduates for the provision of necessary expertise to manage health services most effectively and develop technically competent and socially sensitive managers for leadership roles in hospitals, health systems management, pharmaceutical industries and population programs. The teaching methodology includes case studies and research projects. The two-year MBA-Health Management Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply curricular concepts and hand-on skills to provide solutions to the problems that occur in an organizational setting.

Time should be more for Syndicate Meetings and faculty contact should be arranged. There is a lot of untapped potential for greater collaboration work between IoBM and the healthcare Industry to promote better understanding of Industry needs and trained good healthcare professionals for the future. There needs to be a separate forum for developing health care leadership which will be a separate entity in its own right.

Participants should be encouraged with more ideas as more exposure is required with Industry leaders for that faculty and students must interact with the Industry during their courses. Students should be advised for poster presentation and should be well prepared. It was noticed that concepts on selection of research project was not clear and less opportunity was given to them. Poster content was not organized well some graphs were below eye level. But every student has performed very well they seems bright. I think IoBM will churn out the best mangers with their initiatives. All the Best!!

STUDENTS FEEDBACK

Tuba Khan (13860): It was great success as overall aim behind organizing convention was to boost student intellectual and it was well appreciated by all field players of healthcare Industry. Students after this event will not only be able to improve their skills but will find ways to bridge the gap between industries. Aysha Zia Qureshi (14484): It was a very great experience to be a part of MHM convention. The title of poster for Hospital Administration was ' Patient perception of Quality of health care". The visitors really like our research poster and appreciated our work. The evaluators also listen to summary and afterwards asked relevant questions. They were keen to know result findings, conclusion and the reason for which we chosen this topic. Overall experience was very memorable.

Ayesha Muhammad Arif (13969) I would like to congratulate the whole MHM department for the success of this convention ever in the history of IoBM. As far as feedback is concerned, we got a very good feedback regarding our Poster in terms of preventability, content, readability, significance and purpose. There is a suggestion that we could improve it by setting some guidelines regarding posters. If we all posters were made from the same vendor, there was more possibility of getting all the posters of same sizes and same pattern. Word limits and headings could be decided as a guideline and a standard format to be followed by all participants.

MHM health convention was great.... and positive result which i found during convention was visit of Non-MHM faculty with whole class. She asked about alot of question regarding poster ppt like how did u make this and what's the purpose and so on. She also instruct her class visit to each poster to learn from different poster. She was so impressed by effort of MHM Group. i am very thankful to Ma'am Asima she provide us this opportunity to present poster ppt. My suggestion regarding MHM convention: students should present one poster, student unable to provide full concentration in case of two or more poster ppt. Feedback provide by evaluators were also good, they appreciate us and they also discuss different sampling techniques. Overall Health Convention was GREAT....

Maria Younus (13247)

MHM Convention is a great success and gave the true essence of Experiential Learning and capabilities of Health Managers. The Industry Leaders seemed quite impressed with the idea and were happy to know that so much potential is still untapped.

There are some suggestions for the next convention that only selected and reviewed posters by the senior faculty or Dr. Asima herself should be presented and not all the posters as there was so much food for thought that Syndicates got a little bored of evaluating sp may posters and also pointed out some major mistakes like standards taken for age group in questionnaire as the difference was not equal. The selected posters will not be there with these major mistakes and will show the Industry Leaders that students really know about the research. Also some of the students were not sure of the significance of their study and rationale to do the study.

Mr. Allawala of ATCO also conveyed his feedback that he was happy to see this and really liked the posters and efforts of Health Managers. Also he gave his reviews that students should not be disappointed by the mistakes pointed out as this is the learning phase and we can do mistakes and learn out of it as there is no margin for mistakes in the industry when we enter. So this convention is an excellent way to interact the students with the market and providing them a learning opportunity.

Overall MHM Convention was itself the best example of the experiential learning and the talent and asset we have in MHM. If some models regarding different departments of Hospitals made by students would have been presented, it would be a great source of attraction for the hospital leaders as they felt this missing.

MHM Convention was the best activity in the history of IoBM.

Evaluators encouraged the initiative of the Convention and were impressed by the creativity of students. Public Private Partnership as a topic was admired very much by Dr.Shahzad Alam as he teaches same at Dow University. He was impressed by the efforts we made with the display and presentation of the poster and Time Management was also able to catch their attentions and they shared their experiences with us while poster presentations that how their students and subordinates respond to time pressures. I enjoyed my day at IoBM last Saturday. It’s a success and you and your team deserves appreciation for the achievement.

EVENT DELIVERABLES

(A SMALL STEP FOR AACSB STANDARDS)

Standard 1: Mission, Impact and Innovation

The Departmental mission statement aims to generate managerial skills, ethics, leadership, competency, team work, decision making, communication skills etc. The Convention is a small step towards in supporting alignments in the Mission Statement.

Standard 8: Curricula management and assurance of learning

The Convention where professional Syndicate members from Industry are nominated and they come to the campus under one platform to discuss improvements in the Curricula and teaching methodologies can be a frame of reference to gauge changes and make required improvements in the Curricula.

Standard 9: Curriculum Content

The discussion with the Syndicate followed by student interface can be good monitoring process to find out the required skills set and strategies which the students require to be developed by the Program or should the Program content itself be amended according to the requirements of the Industry.

Standard 10: Student – faculty interactions

The Convention provided an innovative communicating bridge between the students and their faculty to discuss and develop the pertinent areas which were missing in the Convention so that students can get better ownership of the Program.

Standard 12: Teaching effectiveness

Under the umbrella of the Department, the students got a chance for a one to one interaction and develop and ‘experience’ with the evaluators who were market leaders in health care (ALSO THE POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS FOR THE STUDENTS).

The students were actively involved in their educational experiences, in both academic and professional settings, as they got a chance to connect these experiences in meaningful ways.

Event Details

After the successful venture of the Health Management Convention held on August 17, 2013 where more than 20 leaders and heads from the health care industry (hospitals, pharmaceuticals, NGOs, allied) joined under one roof of IoBM and discussed the further developments required in our teaching and curriculum. Our aspiring students also presented their term projects in form of poster presentations which were evaluated by the Industry representatives. The MHM Department in collaboration with PPMA (Pakistan Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Association) and E Commerce Gateway presented -PHARMA SUMMIT - 'Exploring the untapped potential of exports of Pharmaceutical exports from Pakistan' This seminar focused on exploring the untapped and tremendous potential of Pakistani pharmaceutical products for Export to various parts of the world. An area which requires a lot of research and ground work for proper implementation and success, an area in which, the health/business education institutions can play a major supporting role.

The Participation of IoBM in the seminar was as a Co-sponsor and major organizer in getting it arranged and making it successful

Department of Hospital and Health Management at IoBM is playing an active role in grooming the potential Health Managers to have a hand on the pulse of the pharmaceutical healthcare sector

As a mandatory part of our curriculum the students are required to conduct research spread on two semesters and submit a report to the Board of Studies for the grant of their MBA degrees

We have the facility and resources for the students to conduct various researches on the current and burning issues facing the pharmaceutical healthcare sector

In this context, topics requiring independent, unbiased and academic research as required by the Pharma Industry or DRAP or as a joint venture can be worked upon

The CEO of Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan has already approached IoBM to look for areas of research pertinent to the burning issues.
