    WORKING TOGETHER

    FOR HEALTH

  • This years conference moves to one of Australias

premier venues, the National Convention Centre in the heart

of Canberra. Our 400 delegates will be welcomed to the National

Capital region by the Parliamentary Friendship Group for LGBTI Australians, and by the vibrant, resilient,

    local LGBTI communities.

The National Capital region takes pride in being an open-minded, accepting, diverse

    community that welcomes everyone.

9th National LGBTI Health Conference 5

  • On 13 August 2015, Canberras National Convention centre will throw open its doors and welcome more than 400 delegates from 160 LGBTI organisations across Australia to Health in Difference 2015 - Working Together for Health, the 9th National LGBTI Health Conference.

Our delegates will have the opportunity to collaborate, network and celebrate with their peers and their communities, as well as be inspired by innovative professional practice and the largest, most comprehensive selection of LGBTI health research, initiatives and presentations to date.

First held in 1996, Health in Difference draws together community organisations, health practitioners, researchers, academics, policy makers, advocates, community members, corporates and others interested in improving the mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing of LGBTI people. In 2010, the National LGBTI Health Alliance was given the privilege of taking carriage of this signifi cant event.

  • More than just another conferenceIt wont just be all about work for delegates at this years Health in Difference conference. Other highlights throughout the 3-day event include a welcome reception from the Parliamentary Friendship Group for LGBTI Australians; the offi cial conference dinner; a photographic exhibition; and a number of associated umbrella activities hosted by the local organising committee and showcasing local LGBTI community groups.

Health in Difference marks the only event on the Australian conference calendar that is specifi cally designed to address the health of LGBTI communities and is considered the bi-annual destination event for LGBTI health workers, leaders, organisations, academics and community members. In 2013, delegates travelled from every state and territory with 5% of delegates travelling from the US and New Zealand.

Following the success of the 2013 marketing campaign, 60 additional delegates attended which was 25% more than originally forecast. 86% of delegates surveyed rated the 2013 conference program

as good to excellent with the excellent quality of the program, the event timing, catering and planning mentioned often throughout the evaluation summary comments.

With such positive delegate responses to the 2013 conference a decision was made to increase the number of conference places and move it to a more signifi cant venue in the national capital in 2015.

Working Together for HealthThe Conference theme Working Together for Health refl ects the collaborative and inclusive practices of the LGBTI Health Alliance. To this end, it is important to ensure that all voices from our L,G,B,T, and I populations and communities have the opportunity to be heard, that delegates are truly representative of their communities and for those attendees from smaller organisations and individual community members that conference scholarships are provided.

The National LGBTI Health Alliance consists of more than 160 organisational and individual members, and has an active Facebook and Twitter community.

Stream 1: Ageing and Aged CareLGBTI Ageing and Aged Care are currently receiving international attention and the innovations being developed and deployed in Australia are widely seen as world class.

Ageing is about more than care and end of life planning, it is also about living. Health In Difference 2015 will be an opportunity to share recent learning, identify and share examples of good practice, and to discuss innovative ideas that are at the forefront of our work across Australia.

Stream 2:Mental Health and Suicide PreventionThe diversity of our bodies, genders and relationships means that our communities are constantly fi nding new ways of working to improve our mental health and wellbeing within services, communities and institutions.

Often we are focused on the statistics rather than detail. This stream provides an opportunity for us to remember and refocus on the people whose life stories drive our work. These experiences contribute innovation in practice. This, in turn, is strong evidence for transformation, both within our services and communities, and also with the individuals with which we work.

Stream 3:IntersectionsAs members of our respective communities we are more than two-dimensional beings. We have many intersections across sexuality, gender, bodies, relationships, Indigeneity, disability, religion, language and culture, just to name a few.

This stream invites presentations; workshops and activities that explore how these intersections affect our lives, particularly our mental and physical health. It offers a space to share knowledge and practice-based evidence that will help educate and inform in order to improve our services, our communities and us. It also provides us with the opportunity to reveal more about the lived experiences of our communities than the common population-wide studies that make invisible so many aspects of our lives.

Stream 4: Practice. Connect. Celebrate.Working within the communities, organisations and roles that we do requires balance in many areas that cannot often be taught from textbooks. Life and practice-based learnings let us innovate and teach us how to do our jobs well. As experience grows over time, so do the skills and tools that allow each of us to continue to do the work we do.

This stream encourages the sharing of those skills and tools. It aims to bring a focus to areas where we use what we know to innovate with our clients and communities; where we practice activism through support; where we practice and focus on self-care and sustainability of self while serving the communities in which we live; and on ways to fi nd inspiration in the everyday.
