Although children naturally prefer sweet-tasting foods, early sensory experiences can shift unhealthy flavor preferences. Because flavors are transmitted from the maternal diet to amniotic fluid and breast milk, mothers who consume healthful foods provide an opportunity for infants to learn to like these flavors, setting the stage for healthy dietary habits.

Much emphasis has been placed on understanding the dietary intakes and behaviors of infants and toddlers in order to set them on the pathway to optimal health. Different patterns of sugar exposure exist across countries based on culture, region of the world, and food choices.

Key Nutritional Recommendations on Sugars

Sugars have replaced fat as the dominant public health concern. International dietary guidelines have responded to this concern setting similar upper limits for free sugars. As guidelines shift to more dietary pattern-based recommendations, there are a number of challenges to the interpretation and implementation of this single macronutrient approach.

Health Impact of Sugar Intake

Jatinder Bhatia | USADepartment of Pedicatrics,

Speaking at 18:30

Added sugar is a significant contributor of additional energy in an average adult diet. While adding to taste, it increases the odds of mortality from heart disease regardless of age, gender, level of physical activity and body mass index. In children, added and refined sugars increase tooth decay, cause increase in childhood obesity and may have adverse behavioral effects.
