Course summary: flexible design and delivery

Courses within this framework can be studied at a variety of levels, meaning that they are suitable for people from a wide range of educational backgrounds. You can also select from a range of bespoke modules which are tailored to individual and professional development needs. These bespoke modules can be used to evidence learning that is taking place within your workplace.

As well as our flexible course design, our module delivery methods are just as flexible. We make the most of technology to ensure our modules and courses are practical and accessible, so that you can combine study with your busy work and home life.

Many of our modules and courses are available by distance learning, and we also use blended learning (an approach which involves a mixture of face-to-face and online learning) and provide one-to-one support through our established personal tutor system.

The framework builds on existing learning experiences and you can join at the level that suits you. The courses that we offer are:

Case study A nurse studies Acute and Critical Care: Foundations for Practice (20 credits).

She then enquires about other relevant modules to enhance her professional development.

She studies Acute Care: Contemporary Issues (20 credits), followed by Medicines: Therapeutics and Pharmacology (20 credits).

Case studyA midwife studies single level 7 modules relating to midwifery practice as part of her CPD activity.

These include: facilitating behaviour change, examination of the newborn, negotiated learningonmidwiferysubject(each module 20 credits). She then goes on to do the core modules: evidence based practice (20 credits) and research methods (20 credits), plus a negotiated learning module (20 credits) to complete the PgDip Practice Development with a pathway title of Midwifery.

If, in the future, she would like totop-upthisqualification to an MSc in Practice Development, she only has to complete the dissertation module (60 credits). If further modules are focused on midwifery, she could name her MSc Practice Development: Midwifery

Case studyAn occupational therapist would like to gain a masters degree in her area of specialism. To do this she studies the necessary core modules: research methods (20 credits), leadership (20 credits) and dissertation (60 credits), which she focuses on long term condition care.

She then chooses 4 modules that interest her including: long term condition care (20 credits) negotiated learning (20 credits) and rehabilitation in practice (20 credits).

On completing, she has gained the MSc Practice Development, with a pathway title of “longtermconditioncare”.

Induction days

You will need to attend one of the induction days prior to commencing your first module; these run in September, January and March each year. Alternatively, if you are a distance learning student you can complete our online induction package.

If you are an NHS Funded Trust Employee:after you have decided which module you would like to study, you will need to check that you meet the entry criteria. If this module is to be funded by your employing Trust, the next step is to complete the CPD-Apply application.
