JVC HD cameras + Photo camera• During our lesson, we were taught how to safely and use

these JVC video cameras and a still photo camera. This was an important lesson to me as it gave me knowledge and understanding how equipment work as it will benefit me later on in the course as we will be filming a lot.

• We were taught how to turn on and off the camera, how to start video recording, delete unwanted clips recorded off the camera, and zoom in/out. Most importantly, we were guided how to auto-focus a camera in which it helps us get the best quality video possible from recording, if we didn’t autofocus the cameras then our footage would come out blurry.

• We were taught to make sure that we do not drop these cameras as they are very expensive.

Tripod• At first, we did not have a clue of how to set up a

tripod. At the end of the lesson we were able to prepare the tripod by extending it without causing harm to our fingers and set it up with a video camera also. A tripod is very useful as it helps add more shot types available to use at varying heights (e.g. High angle shot, panning shot). It is used to keep the camera still, in which the footage would be shaky if we used our hands to stabilize it.

• It is also required that we understand the health and safety issues and procedures, and that we take fully aware of our surrounding when filming, for example, trip hazards, we need to be careful as we are filming and not to trip over the tripod as this will cause damage to equipment and injury.

Video drive• Every group has been given a video drive in which it is

useful in keeping our works safe. It works similar to a USB but a video drive has a higher capacity in which our footage clips will be potentially as high as Gigabytes.

• The second picture on the side shows how to insert a video drive into the Macs. We do this by using a high speed USB cable to transfer data quickly.

• On the health and safety side, we are opt to never bring food and drink near these equipment. This is important as these equipments are very expensive and damaging them will break them permanently. When we are done using these drives, we are then to make sure we “Eject” the drive from the Macs before we plug them out to ensure that it is safely removed, not doing this will have some possibility that our work be deleted /not saved.

Memory card• Memory cards are responsible for the

recordings/pictures taken on the cameras. These are where the footage/pictures are saved. These memory cards are very small therefore can be lost very easily. It is similarly the same as the video drive, it keeps every footage recorded on here. We then transfer the clips on to our video drive by plugging it into a USB, then on to the Macs. Ejecting the USB before removing it from the Macs is also important, the reason for this is mentioned on the previous slide.
