Bleeding a Patient
• A treatment for almost anything was to do what they called “Bleeding”the patient.
• They used leaches and sucking worms.
• They were attached to the body in hopes of extracting the so called “Bad blood”

Diseases
• Outbreaks of plague and disease were caused by increase in population.
• Very Common illnesses were small pox, cholera and measles.
• People think that the cause of the Bubonic plague was a punishment from God.

Treatments
• To get rid of this disease doctors recommend that you carry a garland of herbs.
• Hot clothes on heels of your feet.
• Then apply live pigeon cut into 2 parts.
• Then plaster egg yolk, honey, herb, and wheat flour.

Bubonic Plague
• First appeared in Europe in 1348 until the 17th century
• It killed 1/5 of the population in 1625.
• Usually stopped during the winter but became large as summer blossomed.
• Transmitted by fleas which lived in rats.

Dentistry
• Was considered a disgusting art.
• Going to the dentist could cost you your life.
• Bad breath was treated with water and vinegar.
• Fillings were used during this time.
• Tooth replacements were from sheep, dogs, goats, baboons, and dead soldiers.
• Eventually false teeth were used and made from hippopotamus bones, walrus ivory, silver, and porcelain plaster.

• Antibiotics weren’t invented until the 1800’s.
• They believed the disease was spread by bad odors.
• Disease caused by sins from the soul.
• Meditation, prayer,pilgrimages, and other non medical methods.
• Travelers were looked at suspiciously.
• Arrival of licensed travelers from the highway meant the plague was a regular visor.
• It was almost impossible to cure diseases without antibiotics
