improving the health and quality of life of the individuals and

communities we serve. Generous support from caring people

has helped purchase life-saving medical equipment, expand

programs and services, and build and renovate new spaces. This

improves care and helps recruit physicians, nurses and other

professional care providers to better serve our patients.

This report is filled with notable achievements and successes in

2011 made possible with your gifts. While the accomplishments

are noteworthy, they do not compare to the very real

difference that philanthropy makes in the lives of those served

by Rice. It is an honor for me to facilitate the work of Rice

Health Foundation – seeing firsthand, the impact that charitable

Rice Health Foundation is excited to welcome Shirley Carter as the Executive Director. Shirley brings more than twenty years of experience in healthcare administration, philanthropy and non-profit management. The executive director position is new to the Foundation and was created to raise awareness of the Foundation and its mission to support Rice Hospital. Shirley’s primary responsibilities include managing the foundation office, as well as working with the Foundation Board to develop relationships and generate charitable capital needed to meet the short and long term goals of Rice Hospital. This new position and Shirley’s experience will be valuable for Rice and those who want to help meet those long term goals with a gift through their estate.

Rice Health Foundation is pleased to report another successful year—helping Rice Memorial Hospital to provide the best possible healthcare to the people of west central Minnesota. The Foundation reported gifts and grants of $476,680 in fiscal year 2011. A great number of departments and services were helped though philanthropy, including Rice Hospice, cancer care, cardiac care, emergency services, and capital equipment to improve patient safety. Disbursements totaling $658,333 were made to Rice for these, and many other healthcare programs. Rice continues to cover all administrative and operating expenses for the Foundation so that 100% of funds raised are used for charitable purposes.

2011 HOLIDAY FESTIVAL Rock Star Ball - a rockin’ success

veryone loves to have a good time, with good friends, for a good cause. Once again, the community came out in strong support to help generate over $76,500 to improve the experience for patients living with chronic kidney disease. With the help of many, many wonderful volunteers, and

generous businesses and individuals, Rice Health Foundation’s 2011 Holiday Festival was a tremendous success. The funds generated are positively impacting the patients served by the Rice Dialysis Department. An additional station was built to help Rice meet the growing need for dialysis treatment. To make their long treatments more pleasant, event proceeds purchased new powered recliners, enabling patients to adjust their seating position independently. Our dialysis patients appreciate the new TVs at each station to make the time pass. People with chronic kidney disease come to Rice for dialysis at least three times each week, an average of four hours each day. This year’s theme, Rockstar Ball, produced a whole new level of fun. The Holiday Inn Conference Center became the venue for a glamorous event worthy of the rock star guests who attended. The two-day event began on Friday night with a Gala Dinner & Auction. New this year was the addition of an After Party, with great music by Outside Recess. On Saturday, guests could enjoy beautiful table settings, shop at a large variety of business vendor booths, listen to wonderful musical entertainment and enjoy a special holiday luncheon. 2011 RICE EMPLOYEE CAMPAIGN Rice employees provide excellent service every day. In addition, employees from throughout the Rice organization demonstrate their care for others through support of the Foundation’s Employee Campaign. Their gifts have funded many different Rice programs and services over the years. In 2011, employees rallied

together to raise more than $54,000 for the creation of a wonderful space for healing and therapy at Rice Care Center. The healing garden offers a unique therapy experience for transitional patients who are recuperating at Therapy Suites. The traditional joys of this garden retreat are enjoyed by all at Rice Care Center—

patients, residents, families and staff. The healing garden at Rice Care Center would not have been possible without the generous support of Rice employees. THANK YOU to the Rice Family of Employees who go above and beyond the work they do to support the mission of Rice Health Foundation.

THE HEALING ENVIRONMENT FACTOR AT RICE CARE CENTER

Throughout the entire Rice organization, we strive to make the transition from hospital to care center, and ultimately home, a seamless process. To help achieve this goal at Rice Care Center, we have begun a major building and renovation project to better serve our short-stay patients and long-term residents. As in previous Rice building projects, creating a healing environment is a key planning factor. The first part of the building project, a new short-stay rehabilitation wing called Therapy Suites, was completed in July 2011. With 23 private suites, it presents a healing environment to people who are recovering from serious medical conditions that no longer require the acute care provided by hospitals. This design award winning facility has beautiful community areas for socializing, dining, and enjoying the soothing sounds and sights of nature. Large windows in the private suites bring in natural light. Pillow speakers reduce noise, as does the elimination of medication carts. Original art by local artists spreads positive energy, motivation and healing throughout private and community rooms. Rice Care Center’s long-term facility will soon match the high level of care that residents and past patients have always appreciated. A complete renovation of the existing building begins in October 2012. The three-year project will create two neighborhoods of long-term care suites featuring separate entrances and community spaces, along with seven double rooms and 34 private rooms. The renovation will update systems and infrastructure as well as create inspiring residential spaces. Therapy Suites patients and Care Center residents all enjoy the therapeutic shared outdoor space that was created during the Therapy Suites building project.

The Healing and Therapy Garden at Rice Care Center offers an environment of beauty, silence and serenity to nurture the body, mind and spirit. Therapeutic features of the garden include paths of a variety of surfaces where transitional patients can practice walking to prepare them for challenges they may face when they return home. In addition, this serene environment is both beneficial and supportive for meeting and treating the psychosocial needs (mental, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive abilities) which are important to a successful rehabilitation. Code Blue Team Leadership Training Ridgewater College developed a new course for medical professionals to improve the communication and care in emergency situations. Code Blue Team Leadership Training uses simulation technology to create a lifelike heart attack scenario, allowing healthcare providers the opportunity to practice, identify, record, and evaluate the processes and challenges they encounter while treating these patients. Rice Health Foundation partners with Ridgewater College to provide scholarships for the training sessions to more than 200 emergency and long-term care providers.

Computer System Upgrade When Kandiyohi County upgraded its 9-1-1emergency response computer system, Willmar Ambulance was required to upgrade its system as well. It is essential that the computer systems be compatible in order to receive timely and accurate dispatch information. One of the benefits of the computer upgrade is that the ambulance run time is now automatically added into the call record.

Dental Therapist Instrument Package Rice Regional Dental Clinic was founded at Rice Hospital in December 2007 to address an identified need for affordable access to dental care by the underserved. The state-of-the-art clinic is a collaborative effort between the hospital and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. The collaboration provides dental and dental hygiene students with the opportunity to practice in a rural setting. To meet growing community needs, the clinic was able to expand their student training program by adding a dental therapist rotation. The clinic can now see an additional 30 patients every week, which especially improved access for children in Head Start.

In fiscal year 2011, Rice Health Foundation provided more than $475,000 to Rice Memorial Hospital to support a variety of programs and services, as well as technology and equipment. This support is possible because of your donations to Rice Health Foundation designated funds and endowments. Your generosity supports the vitality and quality of care of Rice Memorial Hospital, while improving the health and well-being of the people in west central Minnesota. The Rice Health Foundation Endowment was established to provide a stable and consistent source of funds to

help meet the changing needs in healthcare. Grants from the Endowment accounted for more than $168,000 of the total support to the Hospital. Specialized Pediatric Testing Having the most accurate and up-to-date testing tools available to Rice Rehabilitation Center therapists helps them provide pediatric patients with therapy sessions that are of the most benefit to their individual needs. Testing tools are used by therapists to develop programs that help children reach their greatest potential. Occupational therapists help children with fine motor skills, self-care and social skills issues. Physical therapists help children with coordination, balance, strength, and gross motor skills. Speech therapists help children with sounds, language, speech, swallowing, and voice concerns.

Video Intubation Equipment Each year at Rice, we take care of thousands of people. During the course of one year, we treat an average of 12,500 people in the Emergency Room alone. In many instances, especially trauma emergencies, it is critical to open a patient’s airway as quickly as possible. Video intubation equipment is cutting edge technology, allowing a clear view of the pathway. Equipment for both adults and children has been made available through charitable gifts. In addition to helping ER providers who treat traumatic injury patients and other providers who treat patients with difficult airways, the video intubation equipment is an excellent training and education tool.

HoverMatt® Air Transfer The Safe Patient Handling Committee continually considers new ways to minimize manual lifting by nurses and other patient care workers. Rice uses HoverMatts to provide a safe patient transfer from ambulance to ER, as well as to X-Ray and inpatient rooms. A HoverMatt® is an inflatable mattress with tiny holes on the underside that allow air to escape and the mattress to hover so the patient basically floats on a cushion of air. Healthcare professionals can effortlessly grasp the handles to move a patient from a stretcher to a bed or a cart to an x-ray table. The mattresses reduce physical exertion required to move patients by 90%, preventing care giver injury and increasing patient comfort and safety.

TREATING THE WHOLE PERSON—BODY, The healing environment at Rice

Healing encompasses all of our parts, not just the physical body. When our emotions are in turmoil, or our mind is bombarded with

obsessive thoughts, our health is compromised. It is important to create balance in your life by nurturing your whole person, which includes spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical needs. A healing environment enhances the quality clinical care that is provided to our patients and residents. When a New Rice was born in 2006, thoughtful planning guided the project to embrace the creation of a healing environment. We consulted design and patient experience experts to ensure that the hospital's surroundings would affect our patients and families in a positive way. Sights and sounds, colors and textures, all come together to create comfortable and familiar surroundings that nourish the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. It is a progressive way of envisioning healthcare delivery where the environment supports healing and reduces stress in the lives of patients and their families. While our dedicated staff and providers heal the body, as well as the mind, the environments that we’ve created at Rice Memorial Hospital and Rice Care Center use a variety of ways to continue with healing, especially when it comes to the mind and spirit. The healing power of art The careful selection of artwork was a major component in creating a healing environment. Original art is intentionally placed throughout the hospital with its intended audience in mind. Art in the pediatrics area is much different than adult health, or even obstetrics.

The art is by local artists and artists with local ties, using subjects and scenes found in our region. Art was selected for its ability to soothe, calm, or provide a positive distraction for patients and families. It is also used throughout the hospital to help with way finding. When Therapy Suites at Rice Care opened in July 2012, art played an important role in the creation of a comfortable and healing environment there as well. With a grant from Rice Health Foundation, a variety of art pieces and mediums were used throughout to capture the mood of each space. Calming scenes hang in patient rooms, a colorful abstract welcomes all to the common area, water colors inspire and motivate near physical therapy, and homey, quilted wall hangings warm up community areas. Placing unique and original artwork in our therapy suites enhances a positive and healing energy. The healing power of nature The healing qualities of nature benefit mind, body, and spirit. Studies find that viewing nature produces positive changes in a patient's blood pressure, heart activity, muscle tension and brain activity.

Simply viewing natural scenes, including gardens, can significantly reduce stress for patients and provide a calming, restorative effect on their well being. Connections to nature abound at Rice through natural light from large windows, plants, fish tanks, and the soothing sounds of water indoors and out. Outside the main hospital entrance, a healing garden was created with funding raised through employee contributions. It is a peaceful area where patients and staff visit to reflect and enjoy being outdoors. The garden is home to trees, plants, flowers, sitting areas, and other inspiring scenery. Last summer, the Foundation funded the addition of a new water feature, further enhancing the beauty and calming sounds of water. As part of the Therapy Suites building project at Rice Care Center, a Healing and Therapy Garden was established through employee donations. The space offers a beautiful and calm outdoor environment to nurture the body, mind, and spirit. The space helps

the body to heal by providing a variety of surfaces for patients to practice their occupational and physical therapy tasks. The serene environment is beneficial and supportive for meeting and treating the psychosocial needs (mental, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive abilities) which also contribute to a successful rehabilitation. Patients, residents, families and staff, all enjoy the beauty and therapeutic benefits of each of the healing gardens at Rice. The healing powers of knowledge and community Rice provides many opportunities for nourishing the mind and spirit through community connections and education. Support groups offer a confidential and safe place to share the experience of grief, loss, and medical challenges. The Grief Center, Rice Hospice, Willmar Regional Cancer Center, the Sleep Study Center, and the Chaplaincy are just some of the areas that facilitate support groups to promote healing for patients, families, and caregivers. Innovative programs, like Sentimental Journey offered through Rice Hospice and facilitated by Willmar Ambulance, help patients and families begin the closure process. Other Rice Hospice programs that treat the whole person include healing touch, massage, music, and pet therapy. Supporting a healthy mind, the Community Health Library at Rice is open to patients, visitors, and family members. Resources include volunteer assistance, books, magazines, newsletters, medical journals, as well as computer use and internet access. Rice also offers educational opportunities to patients, families, and the community throughout the year. Cardiovascular

Health and Rehabilitation teaches a series of classes to help people learn how to better nourish their bodies through food and exercise. Women and Children’s Care co-sponsors a series of classes on parenting to help people learn how to care for newborns and themselves prenatally and after the baby arrives. They also have trained lactation counselors on staff to help moms with breastfeeding concerns. Both inpatient and outpatient clinicians send patients home with instructions on how to continue the healing process. Many of the components that contribute to a healing environment have been paid for through foundation dollars over the years to help Rice restore and promote the health and well-being of residents and communities of West Central Minnesota. And while all of the factors we outline here play a part in healing the whole person, we’ve found that perhaps the greatest healing power of all is a smile from one of us, staff or volunteer, when we pass you in the hallway. Know that we are here to help you find your way, whether it’s through a visit to the laboratory or the library.

When you or your loved one is in the hospital it can be a stressful time. Whether a joyous occasion, like the birth of a baby, or an unexpected health problem—the world as you know it is different during a hospitalization. Rice has several resources available to help you receive the spiritual care you need to help you through a difficult time. Chaplaincy Services at Rice provides ongoing supportive services to patients, loved ones, all spiritual care providers, and staff. The hospital chaplain or a patient’s own clergy are an integral part of the healing team and can offer personal support and care for patients and their families while they are here. We care for those who have a faith community as well as those with no formal religious affiliation. Patients and guests are welcome to visit the hospital’s chapel for prayer or meditation at any time. The interfaith chapel is a reflective space to feed the spirit. Located on the main floor of the hospital, it is a place of serenity for all people, regardless of faith or religion. Rice Hospice hosts memorial services twice a year in many of the communities we serve. They also sponsor The Grief Center’s annual Share a Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony to honor loved ones.
