In the Old Hat, Elusive Heat finished on near even terms with Gemswick Park (Speightstown), who got her nose down on the line, and Frolic= s Dream (Smoke Glacken), who was another nose back in third. While Elusive Heat=s connections opted for an easier spot yesterday, Gemswick Park and Frolic=s Dream renew acquain- tances. The former, trained by Tom Albertrani, pre- ceded her Old hat victory with a third in the GI Frizette S. in October and a second in the GIII Tempted S. in November. The 126 pounds assigned to Midshipman is one pound less than the assignment on last year's highweight, War Pass (Cherokee Run), and is the standard impost for top Experimental colts. Midshipman is weighted two pounds higher than Vineyard Haven (Lido Palace {Chi}), winner of the GI Champagne S. and GI Hopeful S., and three pounds more than Square Eddie (Smart Strike), winner of the GI Lane's End Breeders' Futurity and runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. The filly division is headed by GI Breeders' Cup Juve- nile Fillies heroine Stardom Bound (Tapit) at 124 pounds, one pound above the assignment on last year's high weight, Indian Blessing (Indian Charlie). Stardom Bound is weighted four pounds higher than Dream Empress (Bernstein). Dream Empress won the GI Darley Alcibiades S. and was runner-up to Stardom Bound in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The Experimental Free Handicap is a weight-based assessment of the previous year's leading two-year-olds, with the weights compiled for a hypo- thetical race at 1 1/16 miles on dirt. This year's weight- ing committee of racing secretaries was composed of Ben Huffman of Churchill Downs, P.J. Campo of the New York Racing Association and Thomas S. Bumped into Grade 1 competition in his second start,Hello Broadway could not keep up in the Champagne S.Oct. 4 and checked in fifth, 9 1/2 lengths behind thewinner Vineyard Haven (Lido Palace {Chi}). Returning inthe GIII Nashua S. Nov. 2, Hello Broadway raced inclose quarters right off the pace and was shuffled backturning for home. After finding room at the three-six-teenths, the colt was reluctant to change leads anddrifted in, but was able to make up enough ground tofinish second, a diminishing 2 3/4 lengths behind fellowHutcheson entrant Break Water Edison (Lemon DropKid). Unraced since, Hello Broadway has been workingbriskly for his comeback, sporting bullets Jan. 9 andJan. 27. The seven-furlong Hutcheson is a cut back indistance for the colt, as his last two starts have comeat one mile. Sal Jak (Graeme Hall) will try to follow thelead of the 2008 Hutcheson winner Smooth Air(Smooth Jazz) and ship north from Calder to post anupset. The stretch-runner enters this spot off threestraight wins, including a 1 1/4-length score in the JackPrice Juvenile S. for Florida-breds Nov. 8. Covered up in the latter half of the field,he was switched out into the clear with more than afurlong to race, struck the front 100 meters out andheld sway. Race of the Weekby Jerry Brown

Friday, Gulfstream Park, post time: 4:43 p.m. ESTHUTCHESON S.-GII, $150,000, 3yo, 7f

Break Water Edison (120) (3-1) - ran big in his secondstart, tailed off, then threw a big one to win theNashua. He spots weight to some good ones here,so even if he runs his best it might not be goodenough--and he's not likely to run his best, bothbecause he probably hasn't been cranked up for asprint, and because the big jump may have takensomething out of him for a while. Next time.

Bee Cee Cee (120) (15-1) - jumped when first time bothLasix and blinkers in August, tailed off, then gotback to his best right off the bench. He would needa big forward move to get involved here, and abounce is much more likely.

Capt. Candyman Can (120) (3-1) - ran pretty well in hisfirst two, and better with Lasix in his next two. Hislast was a strong figure, earned in part by beingvery wide (5w, upper left) on the first turn. This isthe kind of pattern that produces a strong three-year-old campaign, and we like him going forward. But like Break Water Edison, even his previous topmay not be good enough, and he may not be fullycranked up for this.

Hello Broadway (114) (5-2) - is similar to some otheryoung Tagg runners of recent years, in that hecame out running and didn't develop through thecampaign. This colt wasn't badly beaten in theNashua, but that's deceiving--he got a rail trip (1w),while Break Water Edison was 4w and earned amuch better figure. However, Hello Broadway isvery likely to beat his nemesis today--he gets eightpounds this time, worth 1 1/2 points on theThoro-Graph scale. He's also very likely to run atleast as well as his previous best, or better--he'sshown he runs well when fresh, he's older andpresumably stronger now, and he's working fast.

Salo Jak (120) (8-1) - got down to a decent figure in histhird start before bouncing some last time, andcould get back to his best now. But he would haveto improve to beat these monsters, and there's noreal reason to expect that.

Rocketing Returns (116) (5-1) - exploded in his secondstart to win a good maiden race with a very fastfigure, then came back after a break with a similareffort at Calder. At the weights, this colt's best isactually the fastest in this race, and with fiveweeks rest, sprinting, he is also more likely to fire than the ones almost as fast.

Z Day (114) (6-1) - made a huge forward move lasttime (when heavily betYhmmY), and a repeat ofthat effort would get him a piece of this. But a) thatjump is almost certain to cause a bounce, and b)there is a major issue of acclimation, since heworked just two weeks ago at Aqueduct.

Bottom Line - Rocketing Returns is a clear play here atclose to the morning line, with Hello Broadway the oneto fear.

You=re not just pulling my leg or trying to makemy day,@ Eurton said when told. DREAM EMPRESS TO ENGLISH OAKS? TrainerKen McPeek told the Daily Racing Form that the three-year-old filly Dream Empress (Bernstein), winner of theGI Alcibiades S. over Keeneland=s Polytrack, will bypassthe GI Kentucky Oaks and instead point toward the G1Epsom Oaks. AShe=s a big, leggy kind of filly,@ said theconditioner. AShe won on Polytrack and on turf. I don=tthink dirt is her game. After we leave [Florida], I=ll beable to train her on my farm in Kentucky over the hillsand rolling gallops to get her used to that. And thepurse of the English Oaks is huge, like three times theKentucky Oaks.@ A winner on the turf at Saratoga,Dream Empress came off her Alcibiades victory to besecond to Stardom Bound (Tapit) in the GI Breeders=Cup Juvenile Fillies, but could do no better than a well-beaten fourth on dirt as the favorite in the GII GoldenRod S. at Churchill Nov. 29.
