You have already remained inthe service longer than it was anticipated you could be able to remainwhen at my solicitation you acceptedthe appointment. How faithfully anddiligently and successfully you havedischarged all your duties all connected with the Regiment know and feel and they deeply regret the necessity

which compels your departure atthis time when you enjoy theentire confidence of the wholecommand. When all are gratefulfor the sacrifices you have made in the public service, and whenany and every position in theQuarter Masters Department in thewhole command is open to youracceptance No one has contributedmore than yourself to bring aboutthe state of good feeling andunity of action which haspervaded the officers of the12th Regiment Personally I shall dailymiss your prudent counsels yourcheerful and prompt cooperation &assistance and the society of afriend whom I have learnedto value and confide in moreand more each successive day.

I am consoled for your departureby the knowledge that your journeyto the North will enable you inthe performance of such officialduties as are assigned to you bythe Comg General to contribute inno small degree to the successof the expedition Wishing you a pleasantvoyage and a safe return toyour loved ones at home I am Most Sincerely Your friend G.
