Contents Welcome to the very fi rst HE prospectus of our newly merged College! I am delighted that you’re considering becoming a student here.

The decision to undertake a degree-level course is an exciti ng but daunti ng one. With high quality teaching and outstanding support, our Higher Educati on team is here to help you every step of the way.

I am proud of New College’s role in championing higher educati on within the local community, making it accessible to everyone who has the desire to improve their prospects through a degree-level qualifi cati on.

We have underlined our commitment to this end, with our Higher Educati on Centre at Queens Drive and our dedicated HE Centre at North Star in which students can learn and study.

We are conti nuing our Scholarship scheme which proved very successful last year; a scheme aimed at widening parti cipati on in higher educati on from those groups who are under-represented and who face potenti al barriers to access. We work hard to foster a supporti ve learning environment in which our students can explore new opportuniti es, broaden their horizons and thrive alongside like-minded individuals.

As I write this, I am conscious we all young people face a number of uncertainti es. Educati on and employment have beendisrupted by COVID-19 and nobody canesti mate the longer-term impact that this pandemic will have.

Why studywith us?New College Swindon has delivered degree-level higher educati on successfully for a number of years. And there have been a number of long-standing partnerships between us and universiti es to provide high quality programmes.

These partnerships, many of which have been built up over a number of years, provide criti cal resources and services for students, and deliver outstanding results for local economies and local employers. It is important to stress that all higher educati on courses face the same rigorous checks and audits.

While the end result – a degree (hopefully!) – will be the same from either type of insti tuti on, the experience you’ll have getti ng there will very diff erent.

• Our College will have smaller sites than many Universiti es which can oft en spread across multi ple campuses, so easier to fi nd yourway around!

• The student populati ons at New College Swindon will include anyone from 19 – 60, and rising, so there is a very diverse mix of students, so will put you at ease if you are planning to come back into educati on.

• Our College off ers a range of higher educati on qualifi cati ons: foundati on and undergraduate degrees, Higher Nati onal Certi fi cates and Diplomas, part-ti me professional Certi fi cates and Diplomas and teacher training for the learning and skills sector, and not just Undergraduates and Postgraduate degrees and Doctorates.

• Our tutors teaching degree courses will certainly know their stuff and how to deliver it, in the same way you’d expect from a tutor at a university. Chances are some will lecture and teach across both types of insti tuti on.

• There may be a diff erence in the classroom atmosphere. Some students feel it’s more relaxed and inti mate in an FE setti ng, and there are smaller class sizes – meaning you will get more opportunity to ask questi ons and get involved in open discussions.

• Studying at our College you can be living at home and studying nearby. You can also sti ll mix with your circle of friends and keep a part-ti me job. To some students it is not always about partying and having a good ti me, it is about study and your family. It is about fi tti ng in with your lifestyle and home commitments, and saving money on living expenses, competi ti ve fees and accommodati on.

• Our College will have the same classrooms and workshops as a University but as a student of a franchised college, you will be able to access university faciliti es as well.

• Similarly, careers and student advisers will be in evidence at franchised colleges like us.

• If you have completed a Level 3 course at New College Swindon, as we have Higher Educati on provision on campus, this will give you conti nuity and off er you a supporti ve learning environment you are already familiar with to progress your career.

Our Facilities

Courses are delivered from one of our two conveniently located sites here in Swindon. Each campus off ers students the chance to take advantage of modern, industry-standard faciliti es and a wealth of learning resources. Studying locally takes away the worry about long commutes or the cost of living away from home.

We work closely with our University partners, Oxford Brookes, Bath Spa and the Universityof Gloucestershire. This means our students have the opportunity to stay at home whilst gaining a university accredited degree. If you are a student studying an

Oxford Brookes or Bath Spa University course then you can access all of the faciliti es and resources they off er on their campus.

CostsHigher EducationWe are the largest provider of Higher Educati on in Swindon, with higher level courses in a wide variety of subject areas. More students are seeing the benefi ts of studying at a local college that fi ts in with their work and family commitments, without the worry about long commutes or the cost of living away from home.

As well as more aff ordable fees, you could benefi t from smaller class sizes, for more one-on-one ti me with tutors. We aim to create a supporti ve environment where you feel relaxed and comfortable with your fellow students. We have a Learning Development Centre available to all students, where you can benefi t from knowledgeable staff who can help with researching and referencing, borrow from a diverse selecti on of books and magazines, use the computers and have space to work.

Our HE Students have access to a separate HE Student Centre with your own exclusive faciliti es for personal study. As part of your experience here, we value your feedback and have regular Student Voice meeti ngs where you can raise any concerns or give positi ve feedback.

Whichever course you choose you’re guaranteed specialist HE study support, tutorials and a dedicated HE team to help you every step of the way.

All of our programmes are designed with employment in mind and our lecturers have a huge bank of professional experience. They know exactly how the skills and knowledge they teach transfer into the real world. On successful completi on of your course, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in our Graduati on Ceremony, which usually takes place in early Autumn.

Now is the ti me to get your qualifi cati ons, so you can improve your job prospects. Plan now for a more interesti ng future and higher earning potenti al. Higher Educati on is open to students usually aged 18 and over, and many of our courses have opti ons for studying full-ti me and part-ti me, which may mean that you can fi t them in around your current employment.

Dealing with the Cost of Higher Educati on

Our fees are highly competi ti ve anyway. However, when you factor in that you can combine working with study and you can stay at home too, the cost of studying locally reduces massively compared with going away to University.

Getti ng Help with Living Costs

You can apply for a maintenance loan to help with your living costs whilst studying Higher Educati on courses. Maintenance loans are available even if you are living at home with your parents, depending on household income.

Advantages of a Student Loan

The key diff erence between a student loan and any other loan is that what you pay back is based on your earnings rather than what you have borrowed.At the moment you pay back nothing at all if you are earning under £25000 a year.

Once you earn above £25000 a year you pay 9% of the diff erence between your salary and £25000. e.g. if you earn £35000 you will re-pay 9% of £10000 = £900 per year, taken monthly from your salary. If you are concerned that paying back a student loan might be too expensive for you, it might help to know that, regardless of the sum you borrow, your repayments are fi xed to 9% of the diff erence between your salary and the £25000 threshold. Payment terms can change at any ti me.

Make sure you fully explore what they are at the ti me you take out the loan. We can help you apply for your student loan at thecollege. It is up to you though to make sure you fully explore the implicati ons of taking out a student loan before doing so.

Equality, Diversity and Support Careers Service

Our College Careers Adviser is available to all our students to give free and impartial information, advice and guidance on career prospects, work, training, Higher Education and CVs. Careers resources are also available in the Learning Resource Centre and on the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).

Childcare

Although there are no childcare facilities on site at North Star Avenue or Queens Drive, The Co-operative Childcare is an independent nursery located behind Queens Drive. It offers a comprehensive range of services which will help you to complete your studies with the full confidence that your children are well looked after and within easy reach. It is open from 7.30am - 6.30pm daily and offers flexible childcare for children from 3 months to school age. Call 0808 291 3552 to discuss your needs.

Chaplaincy

Our Chaplaincy offers students and staff a confidential listening ear. We have a Sacred Space available for students and staff of all faiths and none. The current Chaplaincy team members offer a service to people of all faiths and have links to other local and regional faith communities.

Financial Support

We have a fund available to provide support to students in financial hardship so that they can continue to study. Higher Education students must have fully accessed their maintenance loan from Student Finance England before they can access this support.

Small short-term loans can be provided to cover education expenses if you are late in receiving your loan from Student Finance England. Application forms are available from Student Services – remember to specify that you are a Higher Education student so that you receive the correct form. Support cannot be provided until enrolment is confirmed and the course has started.

Advice and Support - We will provide impartial advice and support with careers and job seeking, all with your future in mind. Not only will you have the opportunity to gain a University degree or higher level award, but you will improve your skills in communication, presentation, IT and literacy.

Our HE groups are small, so you get to really engage with tutors and peers as part of your learning experience and get the best out of your study time. We pride ourselves on putting our students at the centre of everything we do. That means that our team of tutors, learning support assistants, disability officers, careers advisers, counsellors and chaplains are all here to offer confidential advice and support whenever you need it.

Accessibility - We have resources across both sites to improve accessibility, including reserved parking, ramped access to the building and lifts to all areas of the main building and Sports Centre.

Additional Support - As a higher education student living in England, you can apply for extra help through the Disabled StudentsAllowance (DSA) if you have:

• Specific Learning Differences • Autistic Spectrum Conditions • Mental Health Conditions • Physical or Sensory Impairments • An ongoing medical condition.

Or if you have had:

• Extra support whist at college or school • Access to special exam arrangements.

How to Apply for The Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)

1. Download a form from www.direct.gov.uk/dsas

2. Find out if you qualify. Student Finance England will assess your application and send a letter to let you know if you qualify.

3. Attend a ‘needs assessment’. If you are eligible for DSA you will need to arrange a ‘needs assessment’ to identify the support available to you.

4. Receive your Study Aid and Study Strategies Report. You will be sent a report which identifies the equipment and other support you will need, how much it will cost and where to get it from.

5. Find out what the DSA can pay for. Your funding body will send you a letter to tell you whether any equipment and other support that has been recommended in your Study Aid and Study Strategies Report can be paid for from DSA. You will be given instructions on how to order equipment or arrange other support.

6. Receive your support. Your funding will be paid direct to the supplier of the equipment or service.

Don’t delay, if you are applying for Higher Education, declare your learning difference or medical condition on your application.

Support for HE StudentsCounselling

We offer a free, confidential counselling service. Our counsellors are here to listen and support you if you have any personal problems that affect your learning. Counselling is limited to a maximum of 6 sessions unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Student Services can also provide information on external support agencies, online counselling via Kooth and helplines.

Student Union

Students are eligible to become members of the College Student Union, and participation in their events or membership of the NC Exec is strongly encouraged.The college is affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS). Paying for your Access Diploma

You can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. Eligibility doesn’t depend on your income and there are no credit checks. Pay nothing back unti l you have fi nished your course and are earning over £26575 per year.

Student Finance England will ‘write off ’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balance you owe for an Access to HE course once you complete a Higher Educati on course. This means you never have to repay it!

Access to Higher Education

If you’ve had a break from educati on or need to bridge the gap between your current qualifi cati ons and a degree-level course, then an Access Diploma could be for you.

Access courses are designed for students aged 19 and over who have no, or few, formal qualifi cati ons but would like to study at degree level to develop their learning and career opti ons. The courses are one year full ti me. This is a Level 3 programme and is accepted by colleges and for entry on to degree programmes.

Course fees may be waived for students on benefi ts and there may be funding available to help with travel, childcare and other costs.

A full-ti me programme will usually entail approx 12 hours of study in College per week. This needs to be matched with additi onal personal study. Any GCSE study will be on top of this. Part-ti me opti ons are available for some of the Access Diplomas.

Higher Apprenticeships

Higher Apprenti ceships go from Level 4 to 7 and are equivalent to a foundati on degree and above. They are a great way to earn money while you study, with the added bonus of no tuiti on fees or student debts when you fi nish!

Education and Training Level 4 Certifi cate | Level 5 Diploma

These qualifi cati ons focus on developing practi cal teaching skills, preparing you to work in a wide range of contexts. You will gain a good understanding of the roles and responsibiliti es of a teacher in relati on to legislati on, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeti ng the needs of learners. They are a popular route for prospecti ve teachers who want to pursue a career in further educati on, or currently hold an FE teaching role and want to gain a full teaching qualifi cati on.

• ICT literacy is an advantage

General Entry Requirements

For each course we list the entry requirements with the relevant A Level and BTEC Extended Diploma grades. Tariff points must include a minimum of two A Levels or equivalent. They can also include a combinati on of qualifi cati ons such as the Extended Project Qualifi cati on (EPQ). Equivalent qualifi cati ons may include a range of vocati onal qualifi cati ons from awarding bodies such as BTEC Pearson, City & Guilds, NCFE, VTCT and OCR Cambridge Technicals. We will also accept a relevant Access to Higher Educati on Diploma.

GCSE and Level 2 Key Skills

When applying for any of our higher educati on courses, you will be expected to provide evidence of a relevant Level 2 qualifi cati on in Maths and English. This is to demonstrate that you have the necessary skills to take on the demands of the course, including basic numeracy and literacy skills. Typically, these are English and Maths GCSE grades 4-9 (C-A*). We will also accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functi onal Skills or equivalent.

Relevant Subjects

For the majority of our courses we ask that at least one of your Level 3 qualifi cati ons is in a relevant subject. Examples of these subjects are included in the entry requirements for each course.

Mature Students

For mature students over 18, suitable work experience may be taken into considerati on instead of formal academic studies. You can progress to this course if you achieve accredited prior learning.

Qualifi cations Explained

Entry Requirements

Higher Nati onals (HNC/HND) - are Level 4 and 5 qualifi cati ons, recognised as the equivalent to the fi rst two years of a Bachelor’s Degree (BA). They are work related courses with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’; focusing on the skills and knowledge needed for a parti cular industry. Assessment is by projects, presentati ons and practi cal tasks rather than traditi onal exams. An HND can lead directly to a career, or can be extended via a top-up course into a full Bachelor’s Degree (BA).

Foundati on Degrees - are equivalent to the fi rst two years of a Bachelor’s Degree. They off er a combinati on of academic study and workplace skills relevant to a specifi c job or profession. Ideal if you’re looking to formalise your workplace knowledge with a qualifi cati on and open up your progression opportuniti es. On completi on, you can apply the skills you’ve learnt directly in a work environment. Alternati vely, you may choose to complete a top-up year in order to gain the full Bachelor’sDegree (BA). Open to learners enrolling on an HNC/HND for September 2021The Higher Educati on Scholarship is open to students who are starti ng the fi rst year of a Higher Nati onal Certi fi cate (HNC) or Higher Nati onal Diploma (HND) in September 2021 at New College Swindon.

Zenon Rejek had a natural born talent for problem-solving, applying his strategic brain to both his GCSE Maths study and video games!

His brother was already studying AAT at the college and encouraged him to enrol on the same course to put his numeracy skills to good use.

Prior to joining, Zenon had already passed his Level 2 before hitti ng a brick wall at Level 3. “I decided to re-sit the year and study Level 3 here at the college. My tutor encouraged me to do more self-study. I passed every exam fi rst ti me with the help and guidance of my tutor.”

Past experiences taught Zenon to be resilient in the face of adversity.Now, his advice to others remains the same. Sophie Pook, recognised the pressures of GCSEs, combined with learning diffi culti es and a troubled home life all contributed to her fi nishing school with few qualifi cati ons.

Despite these obstacles, Sophie followed her passion for Photography, which led her to visiti ng Swindon College. She was blown away by how accommodati ng tutors and staff were.

With no previous arti sti c talent to speak of, Sophie proved doubters wrong by studying an HND in Photography, having already passed Levels 2 and 3 in Art and Design. Whilst her HND isn’t specifi cally photography based, the lecturers have tailored Sophie’s learning to allow her to develop the specialist skills she needs.

She plans to pursue a B.A. in Photography aft er her HND. Sophie eventually wants to fulfi l a lifelong dream of teaching Photography – an opportunity she herself never had growing up but one that she wants to off er to other young people.

Chris Taylor has always been interested in Art but, aft er fi nishing school, he decided to put University on hold to weigh up his opti ons.

It wasn’t unti l age 22, that he realised his passion for Graphic Design, and began an HND in Graphic Design whilst living in Dublin - his fi rst foray into the world of creati ve communicati on. This inspired him to fulfi l his potenti al to work in the creati ve communicati on industry. Chris made Oxford Brookes his fi rst choice and enrolled onto a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design based at Swindon College.

Vyzenia Crasto’s family recommended New College and it was her Lecturer who proposed doing a HE Business course.

Up-to-date fees informati on is available on our website and will be confi rmed at the ti me of off er. All new HE students will receive a device to assist their studies. If you withdraw at any point during your programme, you have the opti on of buying your device or returning this to the IT department.

Course Cancellati ons

All programmes are run subject to a minimum number of students. The college reserves the right in their absolute discreti on to cancel any course notwithstanding the provisions set out in the Student Protecti on Plan. Should this happen, we will endeavour to contact you as soon as possible before the programme start date and if you so with, we can assist you with fi nding a suitable alternati ve.

Changes to informati on in this prospectus

Every eff ort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the informati on provided in this prospectus. However, the College reserve the right to change course details at any ti me. We seek to minimise the impact of any changes so as not to disadvantage any students who already hold an off er with us.

When a new course is introduced, it goes through a quality control and validati on procedure to ensure that it meets the standards of the awarding body or university. Where a course is awaiti ng validati on, this will be stated.
