‘Knowing, Serving & Proclaiming Christ in the power of the Spirit to the glory of God.’ He is worthy - Revelation 4 We all give worth to different things. Where you spend your money reveals what you give worth to. How you use your time shows you what you think is worthy of your time. Who you pass time with shows you who you think is worthy of your attention. I could go on. Our lives revolve around what we think is worthy. As Christians who believe in the Lord Jesus, we know that worship is part of life, in fact we would even go so far as to say our lives should be on about worship. Not the false worship of the world around us, but the true worship that God is worthy of. Today we begin a 4 part series in revelation chapters 4-7, we are starting in the second vision that John receives from the Lord Jesus. It is a vision that goes right to the end of the book and it gives us a heavenly perspective on God, the Lord Jesus and what God is doing in the world. It is a vision full of symbols, metaphors and often strange images. For some the book of Revelation is the happy playground of all sorts of wacky theories and unhelpful speculation, for others Revelation is avoided as being too hard to decipher, producing confusion and angst. However the book was given to us for our good, for our blessing. To grasp its meaning let me mention a few vital keys. First the book is centred on God’s gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is all about what God has done through Jesus’ death and resurrection and what God is doing through Jesus as Lord now. Secondly the book alludes to and quotes the Old Testament more than any other book in the New Testament. To understand its meaning one needs to be familiar with the thought world and framework of the Old Testament (So read your Old Testament and ask yourself the question, is this image in revelation alluding to something from the Old Testament?). Thirdly some idea of the historical background is helpful. You can get a feel for the struggles and joys of the first recipients of this letter by reading chapters 2 to 3. It is also helpful to know that these Christians were living in a hostile world, under the powerful influence of the Roman Empire, which at times demanded almost divine worship. Fourthly it is worth noting that the book of revelation reviews human history in 4 sets of 7. Coming back to the same span of time, but looking at it from a different perspective. Today the central vision is focused on a throne. The throne of God. Many things are alluded to from the Old Testament concerning God in this vision. See if you can pick them out. God is alluded to as being Lord over the flood in judgement and mercy (See Genesis 6-9). God is alluded to as being Lord over the Exodus, in judgement and mercy in saving a people for himself (See Exodus 11-19, especially chapter 19). God is alluded to as being Lord over the Exile, in judgement and mercy again (See Exekiel 1, Daniel 7). And finally God is declared as worthy of all our praise, power and glory for he made all things and sustains all things. In other words: God is worthy of all our worship, 24/7. He is the king of the earth, and no matter what human kingdom or empire demands our allegiance our greater allegiance should be to he who sits on the throne.
