THE CLOVER CONNECTION
On November 13th, three senior 4-H’ers left KCI for Kentucky to compete in the National Poultry and Egg
Conference. Haylee Cheek, Morgan Leslie and Natalie Struve were accompanied with their coach, Janine
Leslie, and the hope to bring national attention to Kansas and Douglas County. All three girls participated in
the poultry judging competition and poultry quiz bowl and went on to win second place in the quiz bowl, a
first time occurrence for Kansas. They stayed at the Kentucky Airport Hotel and Conference Hall. On
arriving, the girls studied harder than before, the prospect of winning fueling their midnight study sessions.
As per their tradition since winning the State competition, they did facemasks every night during their
tedious reading.
Not only did they compete in the national competition, but they also had the opportunity to meet many
other 4-Hers from different states and exchange pins. Haylee Cheek, the youngest of the girls, designed
and ordered the pins in which the girls exchanged. On the opening day of the conference, every delegate
attended the tours of the Louisville Slugger Factory and the Kentucky Derby Museum, where they were
able to watch an amateur horse race. Later, everyone attended the pin trading/bowling party where many
of the delegates, including the girls, met their competitors.
The next day, the poultry judging competition started at 8 am in the 10 acre exposition center. The judging
room, filled with experts in their respective fields, lasted four and a half hours, a mere ten minute break
allowed in the middle. After they finished and downed some Subway sandwiches, Haylee, Natalie, and
Morgan made their way directly across the hall to the quiz bowl. Their first competitor, ironically, was
Missouri whom they beat with ease. Natalie, the team leader, took the reins during the quiz bowl and
ended up answering the majority of the questions, earning Kansas a spot in the finals. In the final battle,
Kansas lost 5 to 15 to New York, a regular winner in the quiz bowl competition.
On this trip, the girls, when asked what the best part was, all of them answered with the friendship they
forged with each other. After hanging out, competing, and travelling together, the girls are closer than ever
and even more determined to train the next group of Douglas County 4-Hers to take the National Title.

Record Book Tip of the Month Photographs
Photographs play an important part in telling the story of what you have accomplished in each project. Take pictures of your active participation in the project. Just like your goals, your photos should show learning, leadership, and citizenship in your project. Your photos must be project specific. The Kansas Award Portfolio (KAP) for those 7-8 years of age allows one page of six photos with captions. The KAPs for those ages 9 and older have three pages, one for learning about that project, one showing leadership in that project, and one illustrating citizenship in that project. Each page may have no more than six photos with captions. The captions should explain what is happening in each photograph. Use numbers to help the reader understand all that you have done. For example, “Making cookies” doesn’t give much information, but “Mixing some of the twelve dozen cookies I made and donated to the church bake sales” provides the reader with knowledge that you were assisting in a much larger way.
Keep those photos in a special place on your computer so they will be easy to locate when it is
time to complete your KAPs. Keep those cameras ready!
