ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH

FROM YOUR PASTOR Halleluiah! He is risen even as he said. Although these words may not give us the warm comfort of previous years, I do hope that this Easter allows us some hope. My prayer is that through these weeks of confinement we may have grown in our love for our family, for our work colleagues, for our

classmates, indeed for everyone. The norm has shifted and has forced us to take a new outlook on life. Hopefully the ideologies that have divided us may heal and that we look at each other as fellow beloved daughters and sons of a God who brings new life out of chaos. Yet, it is Easter! We may not be celebrating as we want or like to. As of this writing I don’t know if I will be with family or alone on Easter day. But I do know that I have grown through all this and that Christ is my Redeemer. And that makes all the difference. Fr. Jim

We are on the same boat, all of us fragile and disorient-ed, but at the same time important and needed…each of us in need of comforting the other.” Pope Francis, March 28, Urbi et Orbi blessing.

In these difficult times it is vital that we take Pope Francis’ words to heart, both for our own spiritual nourishment and for the protection of one another. Participation in

the CRS Rice Bowl is one way we can come together, in spite of our physical separation, in quiet, powerful ser-vice. Here are some suggestions as to how we can “turn in” our Rice Bowl almsgiving while participating safely from home:

Donate the amount through Faith Direct (button on

the front page of our website).

Donate directly through the Archdiocese of Seattle or

Catholic Relief Services websites Mail a check of your families donation to our office: 25810 156th Ave. SE, Covington, WA, 98042

For families unable to participate in distance giving, Rice Bowls may be returned in person when we are no longer restricted from coming to the church for Mass.

I would like to THANK those of you who have dropped off a meal for me. If anyone would like to remember me with a meal please email me at [email protected] and I will get in touch with you.

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” Psalm 118:24

On this Easter day, we thank God for His Son, Jesus, who died and rose for us. It is a day of great joy, but as we enter another week of “Stay Safe-Stay Home” it can be challenging to rejoice and be glad. I know for me not seeing my grandchildren has been particularly difficult. I also know that as one of God’ stewards, I am called to rejoice in those moments of grace that are presenting themselves as I shelter in place.

Over the past few weeks, parish volunteers and staff have been calling many of our parishioners to check in with them. Listening to their stories about how family members and neighbors are stepping up to help with grocery shopping, how grateful they are to the streaming of our Sunday Mass, and how they are using this time to tackle home projects has been inspiring.

During our phone conversations we are hearing how grateful our parishioners are for the blessings of our faith. There are many ways we can use this unexpected gift of time in our homes for rejoicing in this Easter sea-son the Lord has made. We hope you will find time to check in with our parish website, www.sjtbcc.org or to like our Facebook page and connect with our liturgies and other resources that will indeed lift our spirits and remind us of all that we are thankful for.

As stewards, this is also a grace-filled opportunity for more time to pray. Prayer opens us up to have grateful hearts and to see the many ways love for others is occurring through outreach to those in need, service of our health care and essential workers, internet social gatherings, increased concern for our elderly and just saying hi others as we walk outdoors.

How are you finding ways to Live a Legacy of Love dur-ing this Easter season? We would love for you to share your stories with us!

Anne Frederick

The Resurrection of the Lord: The reading from the Acts of the Apostles reminds us that we, too, bear witness to the risen Lord. The presence of Christ is within us, mak-ing us new, transforming us, turning us into stewards of the Good N:ews. There is no more time for holding grudges, disliking others, seeking vengeance, maintaining old preju-dices, tolerating bias. We are Christ’s joy and instruments of his peace. Our world is reordered. Reflect on how we are called to let Christ’s forgiveness, reconciliation and love permeate our lives. We are Easter people. Rejoice! He is risen! Alleluia!

Urgent Request These are historic times for all of us. These times are especially for those in the margins that work hard, paycheck to paycheck. Suddenly they have lost jobs and have no control over providing for the essential needs for their families. For many families this is the first time they have asked us for help. We have seen requests for rent and utilities assistance double due to COVID-19. Our St Vincent DePaul (SVDP) volunteers from St John the Bap-tist are on the front lines trying to sort out what can be done for our local neighbors. We are the neighbor that listens. We are the neighbor that provides financial assis-tance when required and guidance to identify other re-sources that may also help. We are the neighbor that re-assures and provides hope. We thank everyone at St John the Baptist that has contin-ued to give to St Vincent DePaul through faith direct or check. We especially thank those that have contributed extra this last month. Your contributions continue to pro-vide a light in this dark time.

If you would like to help our neighbors in need in the Kent/Covington/Maple Valley area; please donate to St Vincent DePaul by mailing a check to the church of-fice. Make sure to identify for SVDP on the check.

We are Easter People!

No matter what we have endured the past few weeks, let

us remember that we are an Easter people. The joy of

Easter is celebrated not only during the liturgical season

we call Easter. It is celebrated every day of the year. The

Mass is the Paschal Mystery, and every time it is cele-

brated, we participate in the sacrifice, death and resurrec-

tion of our Lord Jesus Christ. As St. Paul teaches, we die

with Christ and rise with Him in the Holy Spirit. We are

transformed into new creations. We are renewed.

Stewards of God’s abundant gifts hold dear the promise

of renewal and pledge themselves to the work of reconcil-

iation, healing and proclamation of the risen Lord no mat-

ter what the cost is to themselves. For Christian stewards,

each day is a new dawn for living in the light of Christ.

There is much about dying and rising with Christ that we

do not know; much about the Paschal Mystery we do not

understand. But stewards of God’s love are always open

to learning more; to being called out of their fears and

anxieties and into the light of faith which comes with an

ever-deeper understanding of its peace and joy.

Easter is a good time to reflect on how we can rise above

tensions and troubles and experience the joy of Christ’s

peace. It is also a time to ask ourselves how we can ex-

perience the gift of Easter each day of our lives.

God of love and mercy, we are living under the cross of

your Son in an unexpected and unwelcome way.

We feel the gripping power of fear,

anxiety, powerlessness and dread.

We face the cross with a fearful heart.

Send your Spirit down upon us to give us wisdom and

courage, to console us and give us peace.

One with you and your Son, the Spirit is the giver of life

who can guide us through the storms and comfort us in

our pain and discouragement.

Through your Spirit, transform our weakness into strength

and breathe confidence into us, so that our stewardship of

the Gospel will give us a new boldness to proclaim the

hope of your cross and the joy of Easter morning.

We pray this in Jesus’ name.

Amen.
