At Holy Cross, we believe that you prepare for a great career by educating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. That’s why, in addition to our rigorous liberal arts curriculum, Holy Cross College includes a series of four experiential programs that complement our four-year baccalaureate majors and intercollegiate sports programs.

Four Core Experiences are woven into our curriculum so that all students have the opportunity to practice in the real world what they learn in the classroom.

Holy Cross College’s Four Core Experiences are:

• Professional Internship • Global Perspective • Service Learning • The Capstone Presentation

These programs are designed to help you find your talents… discover what makes you unique…travel to other parts of the world to become immersed in another culture…practice your values by giving something back to the community…and deepen your faith through the trials of real life. What’s more, our career resources and counseling center can help you focus your efforts so that you can strategically reach your goals. By putting knowledge, skills, values, and faith into action, you gain more than an education. You gain the self-confidence and experience to succeed in a global marketplace.

Welcome to Holy Cross College! Our commitment to our students is simple: we guarantee that you will be well prepared to go out into the world and to succeed in life. We can make this commitment because our liberal arts curriculum is designed to test you both within the classroom and beyond.

You will be confronted with academic challenges for the mind, physical challenges for the body, and spiritual challenges for the heart. You will be supported at every step with individual attention and interest from our faculty and staff. Having met the challenges we place before them, our graduates are prepared to enter society as productive and spiritually engaged citizens. We welcome you to the Holy Cross community and invite you to visit our web site and campus to learn more about our outstanding institution.

President’s Welcome

Is Holy Cross College a Good Fit for Me?That depends ...

• Do you learn best one-on-one with your professors?

• Do you enjoy being connected to a small community?

• Do you like to form close friendships?

• Are you inspired by the books you read?

• Are you open to discussing thoughts about faith and God?

• Are you curious about the world and adventurous?

• Do you plan to major in the liberal arts (such as business, art, communications, or psychology)?

If you answered “yes,” then you should learn more about Holy Cross College.

Our big difference is our small size. We believe that students learn best when they are personally challenged and accountable to their professors, peers, and themselves.

From day one, you will be known by your first name. Within weeks your professors will know your strengths and weaknesses and be actively encouraging you to improve in all areas. You will meet friends from across the country and around the world. You will be encouraged to get involved in a variety of student activities.

You will experience real life, not just college life, for the next four years. The Four Core Experiences in our curriculum include: • Service learning projects that build compassion• A global-perspective experience that challenges your world view • Professional internships that enhance your readiness to succeed • A senior Capstone Presentation that builds your communication

skills and confidence prior to graduation

The 2010 student body included individuals from 35 US states and 18 foreign countries

Although our college maintains a tuition rate that is more affordable than the median for residential four-year Catholic colleges in the U.S., we understand that many students will need assistance. Over 95% of our students receive financial aid. Don’t compare us with other colleges until you examine the actual bottom-line costs. Usually, Holy Cross becomes one of the most affordable options. What’s more, we are one of the few U.S. institutions that provides a Tuition Lock, guaranteeing that your tuition will not increase as long as you are enrolled as a full-time student seeking a degree. Indiana residents who qualify for need-based State of Indiana grants, will find Holy Cross as affordable as nearly any other option. Students from out-of-state will find our tuition lower than many out-of-state public institutions. We realize that you have many options to earn your college degree. But if you consider Holy Cross, be sure to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) documents so we can begin to put together a complete financial aid package for you and your family.

The Brothers of Holy Cross founded the college in 1966 on a 155-acre tract of land along the St. Joseph River across the street from the University of Notre Dame. With a long tradition throughout the world as premiere educators, the Brothers of Holy Cross (CSC), have helped found many great institutions of higher learning including the University of Notre Dame (IN), St. Edward’s University (TX), the University of Portland (OR), King’s College (PA), and Stonehill College (MA).

The college achieved national fame in 1993 when the movie Rudy tells the story of an aspiring young athlete trying to reach a lifelong goal of playing football for the Fighting Irish. The main character is not accepted to Notre Dame, so he attends Holy Cross College, which in those days was a two-year junior college.

The character Rudy grows through hard work and support from professors, coaches and staff. In the two decades since the film, Holy Cross has grown to meet many institutional goals and challenges.

Because many students found the smaller community and individual relation-ships with professors preferable to transferring to a larger university, they requested a four-year program. So the college added an academically competitive Baccalaureate program, additional dormitories, and athletic teams in 12 sports. The college became a draw for students from across the country and around the world. Today we have students representing more than a dozen countries and over half the states in the U.S. Our professors, many of whom are brothers, priests, and/or nuns, are known for being uniquely committed to their students’ achievement. They are available after hours, caring about each individual’s success, and challenging students to exceed expectations.

Tradition

4 www.hcc-nd.edu574-239-8400

TraditionUpon graduation, Holy Cross alumni are prepared to think for themselves, communicate effectively, and make well-reasoned, ethical decisions—these are leadership skills that are in short supply and in high demand.

If Rudy were here today, he might be trying out for one of our HC Saints teams that play in highly competitive leagues throughout the Midwest. In fact, in 2010, our undefeated Saints lacrosse team played the University of Wisconsin for the Great Lakes Lacrosse League Championship and brought home the trophy. Holy Cross offers athletic scholarships in men’s and women’s varsity sports (see page 12). Numerous club and intramural sports are also available. Uniquely, we offer a Mission Team with scholarships for student leaders who act as catalysts to help other students communicate their spiritual yearnings and practice their faith. Team members immerse themselves in spiritual growth and leadership programs grounded in Catholic ideals. For students who prefer the individual attention afforded by a small college, Holy Cross provides an excellent choice. There is definitely an advantage to being a “big fish in a small pond.” You will find great opportunities for getting involved in student government, starting a club, directing a play, getting your video on the website, etc. Many of our students also “swim” in the big pond by competing for roles in ROTC, tri-campus plays, choir, band, glee club and orchestra, or by writing for the tri-campus newspaper.

The advantages of being a small college are many, and being located in Notre Dame, IN is great too! Truly, Holy Cross offers the best of both worlds, a friendly environment where everyone knows your name and wants you to succeed. Yet just across the street you will find the diversity of public lectures, presentations, and cultural resources that major research universities have to offer. Tickets for sporting and cultural events on all three campuses (Holy Cross College, Saint Mary’s College and the University of Notre Dame) are available to Holy Cross students, including Fighting Irish football home games. Many Holy Cross students are members of the Notre Dame Marching Band. Try-outs are competitive, but those who succeed find exciting opportunities to perform and travel.

Experiential LearningOur four-year program is unique in U.S. higher education. Each student at Holy Cross, shares Four Core Experiences while earning their BA degree.

This one-of-a-kind approach has been developed out of a long tradition of practical, liberal arts education and is focused on producing strong graduates who possess the five specific competencies that employers and graduate schools seek. Holy Cross graduates are:

• Critical and creative thinkers

• Effective communicators—both written and oral

• Socially skilled individuals who work well on a team, and can lead, influence, and/or manage others

• Technologically savvy and computer literate

• Able to reason both quantitatively and qualitatively

No matter what you do or where you go in life, this unique core will serve as a foundation to support and magnify your success. You will develop these competencies both in class work, and through real-world experiences.

through to publication. My professors have done everything they

could to help me achieve success. I can’t thank them enough.” —Nathan Ring ‘10

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE EXPERIENCEYou’ll travel to Ghana, Peru, France, India, or Mexico, meet the local people, learn about their challenges and history, explore the languages, cultures, religion, and natural wonders while living and working alongside the Brothers of Holy Cross. You may explore the infamous slave castles on the Ghanaian coast of Africa, hike to the Inca Ruins of Machu Picchu, take a bicycle taxi through the streets of Bangalore, experience the miracle that is Lourdes, or ride a burro up a switch back mountain in Mexico. These are just a few of the adventures our students have reported in their Global Perspective Experiences.

SERVICE LEARNINGYou might feed the hungry, help storm victims rebuild homes, mentor children, or comfort the elderly. At Holy Cross you will positively impact the world. Starting in your freshman year, you will not only get the opportunity to earn credit by serving your community, but you’ll discuss your experiences in class and write about them. You will gain experience in leadership, self-discipline, compassion, teamwork, and moral decision-making. And, you’ll gain emotionally moving, remarkable experiences in the process.

PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIPWant to prepare for your dream job? At Holy Cross, you will try it out before you graduate. Starting in your Junior year (or earlier), you will begin researching career paths, looking for employers compatible with your goals, preparing your resume and eFolio, interviewing with pro-spective employers, and working in a professional internship. Through the career counseling center, you will look at all your options and graduate into the world fully prepared to follow your heart to success.

CAPSTONE PRESENTATIONIn your senior year, you will be challenged to write, produce, and deliver your Capstone presentation and eFolio. This is your final challenge at Holy Cross. It allows you to share with your peers, faculty, friends, family, and community leaders the ways in which you have grown and changed. The Capstone helps you synthesize your know-ledge, and prove to yourself, others, and the Capstone Evaluation Committee that you are ready to take the next step in life. The Holy Cross Experience prepares you to develop what the Brothers of Holy Cross call “the competence to see and the courage to act!” 7www.hcc-nd.edu

Professors and Students Working TogetherAt other schools you attend lectures and take notes. In most Holy Cross classes, you engage in discussions with classmates and your professors. You think, participate, and contribute.

We believe active participation is a superior way to learn. More is expected from you in an active discussion. It is more interesting and productive. Participation sharpens your verbal skills, your ability to develop an argument, and your powers of persuasion. These are skills that will help you become a leader in any profession you choose after college.

In active discussions, you also get to know your fellow students and professors on a more personal level.

What’s more, if you need assistance understanding a concept or researching a topic, you will always find extra help for success, including:

• Dedicated research assistance at the McKenna Library

• Full-time help available at the Learning Resource Centers

• Access to computer technologies at the Computer Lab

• Programs to improve skills such as the College Success Program

• Academic advisors who will help you shape your academic and professional career

• Professors who offer extended office hours to meet with you individually

• Peer counselors available for many courses

“Holy Cross is helping me become the person I want to be. As an

education major, I have been blessed with outstanding professors and

teaching opportunities. We are learning to educate the hearts and

minds, and it is exciting to see the difference I can make in a young

person’s life.”

EDUCATIONCutting-edge educational concepts are combined with practical real-life experience in primary-grade classrooms starting your freshman year. Our program prepares graduates to gain a primary teaching license with certification in English as a new language. This is a highly collaborative program that keeps our students in contact with area teachers who mentor and advise.

ENGLISHThe novels, poetry, and stories of the world hold the key to understanding human life through text and context. Reading, writing, critique, and discussion prepares students for careers in all disciplines that need strong writers including law, advertis-ing, public relations, publishing, communications, business and/or education. Many of our graduates have gone on to graduate school. Secondary licensure to teach high school English is also available through courses with St. Mary’s College.

GERONTOLOGY (Minor only)This social science is becoming one of the most in-demand careers in the U.S. as Baby Boomers reach retirement age. You will explore issues of aging and elder care with classroom and onsite work at Holy Cross Village. Holy Cross College is one of the few schools in the country to have collaborative learning agreements with a neighboring retirement community.

HISTORYKnow the past and you can influence the future. You’ll learn how to interpret the meaning of objects and written documents from the past, read the works of published historians and evaluate their ideas. Interpret, analyze, evaluate and critique— these are highly prized skills in many professions. Prepare for careers or graduate work in data analysis, law, government, publishing, communications, business and/or education.

LIBERAL STUDIESExplore the thoughts of the greatest minds in history by delving into the Great Books. You’ll develop strong analytical, writing, interpretation, and communication skills. Learn the theoretical, experimental, and practical science of human behavior for careers in healthcare, education, human relations, law enforcement, and as preparation for graduate studies. Every two years psychology majors attend major international psychology conferences.

THEOLOGYIs it possible for faith to be understood, or is it something only felt by the heart? By a thorough study of sacred Christian scripture, theological and philosophical writings about morals, spirituality, God and society, you’ll discover the relationship between faith and reason in the 2000-year-long tradition of Catholic philosophical thought. This major is recommended for everyone who wants to understand their faith better. Also, you’ll develop a deep under-standing of ethics and faith for careers in ecclesial ministries, nonprofit professions, government, law, business, education and/or future theological or religious studies.

VISUAL ARTSTurn your flare for the creative into highly employable professional skills. Learn drawing, photography, painting, and computer-aided design while building your visual communication skills for careers or graduate school in graphic design, publishing, Web/Internet applications, architecture, fine art, photography and/or education. Holy Cross College is distinctly Catholic and open to all. What this means is that we are serious about our Catholic identity and mission. We respect the dignity of every human person, regardless of race, creed, or social status. All are welcome and we encourage our students to put their heart and soul into everything they do.

Many of our Catholic students worship God by attending Mass every day during the lunch hour. Sunday night student Mass is also a tradition. You can get involved by joining the Mission Team, singing in the choir, praying at Eucharistic Adoration, or attending our popular Spes Unica retreats.

If you are open to helping others, to working to make the world a safer, healthier, and more peaceful place ... and you are open to learning more about the 2,000-year history of Christian thought, then you will find Holy Cross the ideal learning environment, whatever your personal beliefs or background.
