s we start a new decade, we look forward to better times ahead. The last three years have been a struggle in the

construction industry, but the lessons learned have made us all better and more efficient at what we do. That’s good news for you as you plan your next home improvement, remodel or new construction project. Local HBA builders and associates have weathered the storm and are better prepared to serve you now

as a result. The Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield equips members to provide the

best value and quality possible to their customers, while constantly advocating on behalf of present and future homeowners and home buyers to keep the American Dream of Homeownership within reach and affordable for everyone. Consider the advantages of working with an HBA member on your next project. All HBA members’ are required to carry general liability insurance and workers compensation insurance. Although they should (and in some cases are legally required to), not all nonmembers carry these important insurance policies that protect you - their customers - from liability and expense. When you are thinking about building or remodeling, your first stop for information should be the Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield. The HBA is comprised of top-of-the line industry experts who would love to talk to you about any project you have in mind.

In order to become a member of the HBA, companies must submit an application for membership. The application consists of background and credit checks, as well as personal references from other businesses, customers and builders in the area. Builders and Remodelers are required to have been in business in the area for at least two years, and have completed a minimum of five projects. Those projects are then inspected at various stages of completion by experienced HBA builders and remodelers to ensure their quality. All applicants also must provide proof of worker’s compensation and general liability insurance – one of the most important requirements for HBA membership. These insurance requirements PROTECT YOU - the homeowner or home buyer - from liability for on-the-job accidents or other complications on the worksite.

Only companies that meet these rigid membership requirements and pass a review by the HBA Board of Directors are eligible for membership. The HBA cares about homeowners, home buyers and housing affordability. We serve to hold our members to the highest standard of professionalism. The community knows that they can depend on the HBA members as the true professionals in the industry!

The Home Remodeling EXPO began in back in 2000. This event was cre-ated during a growth in the remodeling industry as well as an expansion of the membership by those focusing on remodeling.Since its beginning it has been an excel-lent show to attend for those specifically interested in enhancing or repairing their existing home. Attend seminars and meet face-to-face with Remodelers. The Home Remodeling EXPO helps YOU cut to the chase and find out all the ins and outs of remodeling as well as new technology and trends. Much like the Home Show in many respects with an emphasis on remodeling.

The Home Show has been the HBA’s largest event for many years. What started out as a tabletop event at the mall in 1981has evolved into an event that energizes members to plan throughout the year. It gives members an opportunity to display their strengths as well as trends and new technology in the build-ing and remodeling industry.

Over the years the HBA has added Seminars and Demonstra-tions to educate YOU, the consumer, on what to look for while building, buying or remodeling as well as how to maintain and protect your home.

The HBA of Greater Springfield received its charter in and hosted a One Home Parade In 1954. This home was referred to as a “Builder Home.” In 1955 the Pa-rade of Homes expanded to 16 homes and became an excellent venue for builders to showcase their talent and for visitors to witness the craftsmenship found in homes built by HBA Builders. Today we carry on this tradition with many loyal followers from years past as well as newcomers to the Parade looking for a quality builder or just investigating the trends and enjoying the beauty of a quality home built by an HBA member.Tour Parade Homes the last two week-ends of June each year.

1 Build on a Solid Foundation – Start your search by checking out members of professional organizations with meaningful membership standards. The Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield, for instance, requires that its members carry general liability and workers‘ compensation insurance, submit to background and credit checks, submit their construction projects for peer inspections and customer references.

2 Focus in on the expertise you need. When you have heart surgery, you want a heart surgeon, not an orthopedic surgeon. You want a builder/remodeler with experience and even professional credentials unique to your project. There are builders and remodelers who have expertise in a variety of home styles and construction techniques. Whether it is green building or universal design for seniors who want to “age in place”, there are many specialized designations that may be relevant to your building project. 3 Meet & Greet - Attend events such as Home Show, Parade of Homes, and Home Remodeling EXPO, which showcase builders and remod-elers so you can meet them face to face and see who you feel most comfortable with. Ask how they will communicate with you and the level of detail included in their contract for a custom project. Find out what systems and technology they have in place for keeping projects on time and on budget.

4 Protect Yourself and Get References -- Before you get very far, make sure the builders you are considering have proof of workers’ compen-sation insurance (required by state law) and carry general liability insurance (protects homeowners in the event of a future defect). Mis-souri does not license residential builders so find out what your city/county requires in the way of a business or contractor’s license and make sure the contractor has the required license(s). Always talk to previous clients and check out the quality of their work for yourself.

5 Don’t just look at the bottom line to make a choice. If you proceed with a bidding process to select a builder/remodeler, examine the detailed cost information the bid contains and make sure you are comparing apples to apples by understanding the process each contractor used to prepare the bid. Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. This may indicate any number of issues including old or inaccurate material cost information and even a lack of professional understanding about how to calculate costs accurately. You may end up with serious budget overruns down the line as a result.

In 2010, Scott constructed the first home in Southern Missouri that was certified to the Gold level of the National Green Building Standard. He has been specializ-ing in building Insulated Concrete Homes (ICF’s) for the last 12 years and strongly believes in this method of construction, although he will still build quality wood homes when requested. Scott has been building exceptional homes in the Springfield area for more than 25 years. Scott was named 2007’s HBA Builder of the Year by his peers and also was the builder of the 2007 St. Jude Dream Home.
